Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural History Rambles: The Woodlands Caesar says, what the Britons call a town, is a tract of woody country, surrounded by a high bank and a ditch, for the security of themselves and cattle against the incursions of their enemies, and Strabo remarks that the forests of the Britons are their cities for when they have inclosed a very large circuit with felled trees, they build within it houses for them selves, and hovels for their cattle. Thus the early records of the Briton associate him with a love for trees and woods. Gradually, but continually, during the past thousand years, the original forests have diminished; partly to furnish timber for houses and ships, partly being en closed and brought under cultivation, but chiefly to meet the wants of a rapidly increasing population. On the other hand, fruit-trees, in orchards and gardens, large parks with ornamental trees, young plantations, and other forms of vegetation, having to a large extent replaced the forests, less disastrous consequences have followed their diminution than have resulted in many other countries, as for example in Spain, as well as some portions of France. Forests, which are distributed so universally over the surface of the globe, and are recklessly destroyed in newly-colonized countries, without regard to con sequences, have important functions to perform in the economy of nature. It is only in most recent times that man has awakened to the consciousness, that in the wholesale destruction of forests the entire aspect of a country is changed, equilibrium disturbed, and the advent of desolation threatened. The destruction of forests in the Island of Cyprus, in order to furnish its celebrated timber to the Romans, jews, and other nations, has reduced a paradise to a comparative wilderness 3 and the progress of similar destruction in India aroused the Government to adopt a complete system of forest conservancy in order to avert the threatened evil. Book Rambles in the Black Forest Classic Reprint

Download or read book Rambles in the Black Forest Classic Reprint written by Henry W. Wolff and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles in the Black Forest Black Forest is, I am afraid, not altogether as familiar to our English travelling public as it deserves to be. The Black Forest historian, Dr. Bader - writing, it is true, some decennia ago - complains that we are disposed to look upon his country as genuine backwood, and to picture to ourselves its inhabitants as real, wild savages. That holds good, of course, no longer. Nevertheless, to but too many among us the Forest is still something like a Hercynian wild - credited, indeed, with natural attractions, but not magnetic enough, in its supposed sameness of silvan scenery, or its roughness of accommodation, to make those attractions effective. We travel past it - shoals of us do - every year. Trains, closely packed, run by it, carrying our migrating flock of human sheep to those recognized Alpine pastures, to which accepted bell-wethers still lead them - on which, amid familiar surroundings to eye and ear - English faces, English newspapers, English advertisements, and English speech of various accents - travellers may "change their sky" though in truth they change little else. Good speed to them on their journey! I have nothing to say against their choice. But is there not some virtue still in that old schoolboy proverb - variatio delectat? Book Secrets of the Oak Woodlands

Download or read book Secrets of the Oak Woodlands written by Kate Marianchild and published by Heyday Books. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Californian may vacation in Yosemite, Big Sur, or Death Valley, but many of us come home to an oak woodland. Yet, while common, oak woodlands are anything but ordinary. In a book rich in illustration and suffused with wonder, author Kate Marianchild combines extensive research and years of personal experience to explore some of the marvelous plants and animals that the oak woodlands nurture. Acorn woodpeckers unite in marriages of up to ten mates and raise their young cooperatively. Ground squirrels roll in rattlesnake skins to hide their scent from hungry snakes. Manzanita's rust-colored, paper-thin bark peels away in time for the summer solstice, exposing sinuous contours that are cool to the touch even on the hottest day. Conveying up-to-the-minute scientific findings with a storyteller's skill, Marianchild introduces us to a host of remarkable creatures in a world close by, a world that "rustles, hums, and sings with the sounds of wild things."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the New York Times-bestselling author of The Hidden Life of Trees, this guide to awakening your senses and engaging deeply with the forest is the perfect gift for hikers and walkers. “This book will fast-track you into the joys of spending time amongst the trees.”—Tristan Gooley, author of The Lost Art of Reading Nature’s Signs and How to Read Water "You'll be changed after reading this fine and enchanting book.”—Richard Louv, author of Our Wild Calling and Last Child in the Woods When you walk in the woods, do you use all five senses to explore your surroundings? For most of us, the answer is no—but when we do, a walk in the woods can go from pleasant to immersive and restorative. Forest Walking teaches you how to engage with the forest by decoding nature’s signs and awakening to the ancient past and thrilling present of the ecosystem around you. What can you learn by following the spread of a root, by tasting the tip of a branch, by searching out that bitter almond smell? What creatures can be found in a stream if you turn over a rock—and what is the best way to cross a forest stream, anyway? How can you understand a forest’s history by the feel of the path underfoot, the scars on the trees along the trail, or the play of sunlight through the branches? How can we safely explore the forest at night? What activities can we use to engage children with the forest? Throughout Forest Walking, the authors share experiences and observations from visiting forests across North America: from the rainforests and redwoods of the west coast to the towering white pines of the east, and down to the cypress swamps of the south and up to the boreal forests of the north. With Forest Walking, German forester Peter Wohlleben teams up with his longtime editor, Jane Billinghurst, as the two write their first book together, and the result is nothing short of spectacular. Together, they will teach you how to listen to what the forest is saying, no matter where you live or which trees you plan to visit next.
