Download or read book The Forest Land Owners of Kentucky Classic Reprint written by Thomas W. Birch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-28 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forest-Land Owners of Kentucky The most recent forest survey of Ken tucky - 1975 - provided estimates of forest area and timber volume by broad owner categories (kingsley and Powell That survey did not, however, estimate the timber volume or acreage of commercial forest land that is available for har vesting. The report also did not describe forest land owners, their reasons for owning forest land, or their attitudes toward timber harvesting, forest management, and the recreational use of their lands by the public. Such information is useful to public agencies for planning and organizing forestry-related pro grams; to forest industries for locating available timber; and to others for learning more about the motivations and objectives of forest-land owners. Ninety-two percent of the commercial forest land in Kentucky is in private hands, and an in-depth look at the private forest-land owners will provide a better understanding of the forest resources of the State. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kentucky Forests, Eastern Unit To meet these needs, the Division of Forestry of the Kentucky Department of Natural Resources and the U. S. Forest Service planned and conducted a new inventory of Kentucky forests. The field work was completed in 1964. The mcsweeney-mcnary Forest Research Act of 1928 authorizes the Forest Service to complete a statewide forest inventory of Kentucky at approximate 10 year intervals. This is part of the nationwide program of maintaining a current account of our timber resources. The State of Kentucky appropriated for the current survey. This contribution, supplementing the Federal funds available for a regular survey, made it possible to intensify the inventory. As a result, we can provide the kind of detailed information needed for making long-range plans to meet future demands and in addition help local communities and forest-based industries make more efficient use of the forest resource. Clarence D. Chase, Leader of the Survey Project at the Lake States Forest Experiment Station, directed the inventory. Field survey units of the Kentucky Division of Forestry and the Lake States Station collected the basic inventory data. The Lake States Station computed and tabulated the final statistics and the Central States Forest Experiment Station analyzed and reported the results. He would have uttered the long forest shout, as a signal to his comrade, but even that was forbidden. Henry had seen signs in the forest that indicated more than once to his infallible eye the presence of roving warriors from the north, and no risk must be taken. But, as usual, it was only the note of the wilderness that came to his ears. He stopped also once or twice, not to listen, but to look at the splendid country, and to think What a great land it would surely be. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nick of the Woods: A Story of the Early Settlers in Kentucky These remarks will serve as an explanation, and, if it be necessary, as an apology for some of the characters that figure in the following pages, particularly that of the hon est colonel of militia. In a story written to illustrate the early period in which those men were busily engaged in strengthening and securing their little State - a period the darkest and stormiest in the annals of the Indian border it was both fitting and necessary that some representative of the race should appear. The outlines may be ruder than was proper or just; but they will be the better foil to the generous qualities of spirit, common at that day to all the men of Bruce's class.
