Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children's health has made tremendous strides over the past century. In general, life expectancy has increased by more than thirty years since 1900 and much of this improvement is due to the reduction of infant and early childhood mortality. Given this trajectory toward a healthier childhood, we begin the 21st-century with a shocking developmentâ€"an epidemic of obesity in children and youth. The increased number of obese children throughout the U.S. during the past 25 years has led policymakers to rank it as one of the most critical public health threats of the 21st-century. Preventing Childhood Obesity provides a broad-based examination of the nature, extent, and consequences of obesity in U.S. children and youth, including the social, environmental, medical, and dietary factors responsible for its increased prevalence. The book also offers a prevention-oriented action plan that identifies the most promising array of short-term and longer-term interventions, as well as recommendations for the roles and responsibilities of numerous stakeholders in various sectors of society to reduce its future occurrence. Preventing Childhood Obesity explores the underlying causes of this serious health problem and the actions needed to initiate, support, and sustain the societal and lifestyle changes that can reverse the trend among our children and youth.

Book Fruit and Vegetable Consumption of Rural Middle School Children Participating in the National School Lunch Program

Download or read book Fruit and Vegetable Consumption of Rural Middle School Children Participating in the National School Lunch Program written by Alyssa A. Weinrich and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Childhood obesity is a growing problem across the United States. Obese children are more likely to become obese adults. Eating a balanced diet is believed to play a role in the prevention of obesity; therefore, the nutritional content of school lunches is important for children's health. The 2012 revisions to the National School Lunch Program increased the overall servings of fruit and vegetables offered. Now children must purchase either a fruit and/or vegetable. At this time it is not known whether children consume the fruits and vegetables that they purchase. The purpose of this research was to determine fruit and vegetable purchases and consumption of rural middle school students participating in the National School Lunch Program. Food production lists were examined to calculate total servings of fruits and vegetables purchased under the previous school lunch guidelines in 2012 to the revised guidelines in 2013. Children's plates were examined to determine the percentage of fruits and vegetables consumed. Though not significant, fruit and vegetable purchases increased from 2012 to 2013. Fruit consumption was significantly different between grades. Purchasing and consumption of fruits and vegetables remain below the program's nutritional goals; therefore, continued focus on improving their intake is important.

Book Nutritional Adequacy Diversity and Choice Among Primary School Children

Download or read book Nutritional Adequacy Diversity and Choice Among Primary School Children written by Shreelata Rao Seshadri and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the reality of malnutrition among school-age children in India and relates it with dietary adequacy, diversity and choice. Using empirical data from field research conducted in Karnataka, India, it documents the nutritional status of school-going children, and examines the socio-economic determinants. It provides insights into changing dietary patterns by analysing case studies from households and schools; and documents the impact of changing dietary choices on the daily nutritional intake of young children. As the issue of nutrition for school-age children is one that is largely neglected in the literature, the book fills an important gap. The book also investigates the policy framework for addressing the nutritional needs of school-going children, and assesses the available government-sponsored interventions in terms of their efficiency and effectiveness, measured by their impact on the nutritional indices of the target group. It offers concrete recommendations for changing the nutritional intake of school-going children. Navigating through the socio-cultural causes for changing food choice and their impact on children’s nutritional outcomes, this book shows a viable path to addressing malnutrition, taking into account both macro-level policy constraints and the micro-level perspectives of families, schools and communities.
