Book Borderland Lives in Northern South Asia

Download or read book Borderland Lives in Northern South Asia written by David N. Gellner and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2013-12-20 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Borderland Lives in Northern South Asia provides valuable new ethnographic insights into life along some of the most contentious borders in the world. The collected essays portray existence at different points across India's northern frontiers and, in one instance, along borders within India. Whether discussing Shi'i Muslims striving to be patriotic Indians in the Kashmiri district of Kargil or Bangladeshis living uneasily in an enclave surrounded by Indian territory, the contributors show that state borders in Northern South Asia are complex sites of contestation. India's borders with Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma/Myanmar, China, and Nepal encompass radically different ways of life, a whole spectrum of relationships to the state, and many struggles with urgent identity issues. Taken together, the essays show how, by looking at state-making in diverse, border-related contexts, it is possible to comprehend Northern South Asia's various nation-state projects without relapsing into conventional nationalist accounts. Contributors. Jason Cons, Rosalind Evans, Nicholas Farrelly, David N. Gellner, Radhika Gupta, Sondra L. Hausner, Annu Jalais, Vibha Joshi, Nayanika Mathur, Deepak K. Mishra, Anastasia Piliavsky, Jeevan R. Sharma, Willem van Schendel

Book Anthropology and Cryptozoology

Download or read book Anthropology and Cryptozoology written by Samantha Hurn and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cryptozoology is best understood as the study of animals which, in the eyes of Western science, are extinct, unclassified or unrecognised. In consequence, and in part because of its selective methods and lack of epistemological rigour, cryptozoology is often dismissed as a pseudo-science. However, there is a growing recognition that social science can benefit from engaging with it, for as as social scientists are very well aware, ’scientific’ categorisation and explanation represents just one of a myriad of systems used by humans to enable them to classify and make sense of the world around them. In many cultural contexts, myth, folk classification and lived experience challenge the ’truth’ expounded by scientists. With a reflexive, anthropological approach and drawing on rich empirical and ethnographic studies from around the world, this volume engages with the theoretical and methodological issues raised by reported sightings of unrecognised animals. Bringing into sharp focus the anthropological value and challenges for methodology posed by beliefs about unclassified creatures, Anthropology and Cryptozoology: Exploring encounters with mysterious creatures will be of interest to anthropologists, sociologists and geographers working in the fields of research methods, anthrozoology, mythology and folklore and human-animal interaction.

Book Ecological Interconnections

Download or read book Ecological Interconnections written by Shruti Das and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-11-15 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecological Interconnections: Critical Readings on Ethics, Sustainability and Interspecies Communication in Literature and Culture argues that literature and cultural studies are vital tools for understanding and addressing ecological issues. This edited book of sixteen essays explores how literary texts and cultural iconography can highlight ecological ethics, promote sustainability, and enhance interspecies communication. By critiquing anthropocentric perspectives and emphasizing non-human ecologies, the book explores the importance of deep ecology and ecoprecarity in contemporary discourse. Divided into three sections—"Interspecies Communication and Intersection," "Eco-ethical Intersection and Responsibility," and "Towards Ecological Sustainability"—the essays advocate for a practical shift from theoretical considerations to active ecological commitment. The book demonstrates that literature can cultivate eco-consciousness and empathy, fostering sustainable coexistence. Through its interdisciplinary approach, this book provides a comprehensive understanding of the interconnectedness of human and non-human life, making it an indispensable resource for scholars, students, and eco-conscious individuals.
