Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its isolation on the western edge of Europe, Ireland occupies vast amounts of space on the music maps of the world. Although deeply rooted in time and place, Irish songs, dances and instrumental traditions have a history of global travel that span the centuries. Whether carried by exiles, or distributed by commercial networks, Irish traditional music is one of the most popular World Music genres, while Clare, on Ireland's Atlantic seaboard, enjoys unrivaled status as a "Home of the Music," a mecca for tourists and aficionados eager to enjoy the authentic sounds of Ireland. For the first time, this remarkable soundscape is explored by an insider-a fourth generation Clare concertina player, uilleann piper and an internationally recognized authority on Irish traditional music. Entrusted with the testimonies, tune lore, and historic field recordings of Clare performers, Gearóid Ó hAllmhuráin reveals why this ancient place is a site of musical pilgrimage and how it absorbed the impact of global cultural flows for centuries. These flows brought musical change inwards, while simultaneously facilitating outflows of musical change to the world beyond - in more recent times, through the music of Clare stars like Martin Hayes and the Kilfenora Céilí Band. Placing the testimony of music and music makers at the center of Irish cultural history and working from a palette of disciplines, Flowing Tides explores an Irish soundscape undergoing radical change in the period from the Napoleonic Wars to the Great Famine, from the birth of the nation state to the meteoric rise-and fall-of the Celtic Tiger. It is essential reading for all interested in Irish/Celtic music and culture.

Book Taming the Tide of Capital Flows

Download or read book Taming the Tide of Capital Flows written by Atish R. Ghosh and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive examination of policy measures intended to help emerging markets contend with large and volatile capital flows. While always episodic in nature, capital flows to emerging market economies have been especially volatile since the global financial crisis. After peaking at $680 billion in 2007, flows to emerging markets turned negative at the onset of crisis in 2008, then rebounded only to recede again during the U.S. sovereign debt downgrade in 2011. Since then, flows have continued to swing wildly, leaving emerging market policy makers wondering whether they can put in place policies during the inflow phase that will soften the blow when flows subsequently recede. This book offers the first comprehensive treatment of policy measures intended to help emerging markets contend with large and volatile capital flows. The authors, all IMF experts, explain that, in the spirit of liberalization and deregulation in the 1980s and 1990s, many emerging market governments eliminated capital inflow controls along with outflow controls. By 2012, however, capital inflow controls were again acknowledged as legitimate policy tools. Focusing on the macroeconomic and financial-stability risks associated with capital flows, the authors combine theoretical and empirical analysis to consider the interaction between monetary, exchange rate, macroprudential, and capital control policies to mitigate these risks. They examine the effectiveness of various policy tools, discuss the practical considerations and multilateral implications of their use, and provide concrete policy advice for dealing with capital inflows.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Every Woman Knows (1908) is a play by J. M. Barrie. It ran for 384 performances at the Duke of York’s Theatre in London and was produced on Broadway as well, making it one of the most successful plays of the year. Inspired by the women’s suffrage movement, Barrie sought to explore the intersection of gender and class in Scottish aristocratic society. Adapted numerous times for film and consistently revived on stage, What Every Woman Knows is an enduring work of English theatre by an author whose reputation as the creator of Peter Pan has largely overshadowed the rest of his brilliant career. Behind every great man, an even better woman makes his success possible. In J. M. Barrie’s masterful play, a Scottish family worried for their daughter’s future seizes the chance to marry her off to a promising young man. Having discovered a young university student in their vast library, they offer to pay for his education if he agrees to take Maggie’s hand. Left with no real choice in the matter, John Shand marries into the Wylie family and attempts to launch a career in politics. As his reputation grows—due in no small part to his wife’s hard work—Shand begins to forget his impoverished roots, dreaming instead of a future all his own. Funny and deeply critical of the institution of marriage, What Every Woman Knows is a story of romance, ambition, and humility from a legendarily gifted Scottish storyteller. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of J. M. Barrie’s What Every Woman Knows is a classic work of Scottish literature reimagined for modern readers.
