Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Admiral Lord Nelson's diamond Chelengk is one of the most famous and iconic jewels in British history. Presented to Nelson by the Sultan Selim III of Turkey after the Battle of the Nile in 1798, the jewel had thirteen diamond rays to represent the French ships captured or destroyed at the action. A central diamond star on the jewel was powered by clockwork to rotate in wear. Nelson wore the Chelengk on his hat like a turban jewel, sparking a fashion craze for similar jewels in England. The jewel became his trademark to be endlessly copied in portraits and busts to this day. After Trafalgar, the Chelengk was inherited by Nelson's family and worn at the Court of Queen Victoria. Sold at auction in 1895 it eventually found its way to the newly opened National Maritime Museum in Greenwich where it was a star exhibit. In 1951 the jewel was stolen in a daring raid by an infamous cat-burglar and lost forever. For the first time, Martyn Downer tells the extraordinary true story of the Chelengk: from its gift to Nelson by the Sultan of Turkey to its tragic post-war theft, charting the jewel's journey through history and forging sparkling new and intimate portraits of Nelson, of his friends and rivals, and of the woman he loved.

This book was released on 2022-08-14 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translation of the Tamil novel, Ponniyin Selvan by Kalki . This is volume 3 of 5. Terrorist plots, love & hate uncovered. Indra Neelameggham brings the beauty of Tamil style and cadence into English. There is intrigue, politics, murder, mystery, power of women, life of the nobility and ordinary folk, war and ambition. Tamil culture and and Chozla history from 1000 years ago comes to life. Ponniyin Selvan was published as a serial - novel in the Tamil Magazine Kalki from 1950 to 1954. It was written by Kalki Krishnamurthy, an award winning author, in Tamil. Art work by Maniam brought life to the characters. This English translation by Indra Neelameggham maintains Kalki's "Nadai" or cadence of the original Tamil. Indra was the first to translate this epic into English as early as the 1990s. This five part novel introduces the grandeur of the Chozla Dynasty of Tamil people, whose empire at one time spanned large areas of south east Asia. They were famous for art, architecture, irrigation works, administration, naval warfare and most importantly global trade because of their naval prowess. The Grand Anaicut one of the oldest, still in use dams across any major river, was built by the Chozlas. The huge complex known as 'Big Temple ' in Tanjavur was built more than a thousand years ago by Rajaraja, the main character in this novel. He is known as the Beloved of the River Ponni , the Tamil name for The Cauvery. The activities of common folk, nobility, ordinary soldiers, the power wielded by women, conniving statesmen, terrorists, treason, war, pirates, murder and turmoil for a throne are the core threads in this panoramic story. References to Tamil poetry and myth enrich the story. Kalki brought the meticulously researched history to the doorsteps of millions who were proud that they too had 'history' beyond what was shared by colonial books. It is now a major multi language motion picture filmed with latest technology in locations in many countries. This book and its art work has thrilled generations of readers. This translation is sure to enthrall many more persons all over the world. Indra has brought this English version to help readers overcome the limitation of not knowing Tamil. May all go forth to enjoy the grand old world of the Chozlas of Tamil country.

Book Maps for Lost Lovers

  • Author : Nadeem Aslam
  • Publisher : Random House India
  • Release : 2012-09-25

Download or read book Maps for Lost Lovers written by Nadeem Aslam and published by Random House India. This book was released on 2012-09-25 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in a nameless British town that its Pakistani-born immigrants have renamed Dasht-e-Tanhaii, the Desert of Solitude, Maps for Lost Lovers is an exploration of cultural tension and religious bigotry played out in the personal breakdown of a single family. As the book begins, Jugnu and Chanda, whose love is both passionate and illicit, have disappeared from their home. Rumours about their disappearance abound, but five months pass before anything certain is known. Finally, on a snow-covered January morning, Chanda’s brothers are arrested for the murder of their sister and Jugnu. Maps for Lost Lovers traces the year following Jugnu and Chanda’s disappearance. Seen principally through the eyes of Jugnu’s brother Shamas, the cultured, poetic director of the local Community Relations Council and Commission for Racial Equality, and his wife Kaukab, mother of three increasingly estranged children and devout daughter of a Muslim cleric, the event marks the beginning of the unravelling of all that is sacred to them. It fills Shamas’s own house and life with grief and, in exploring the lovers’ disappearance and its aftermath, Nadeem Aslam discloses a legacy of miscomprehension and regret not only for Shamas and Kaukab but for their children and neighbours as well. An intimate portrait of a community searingly damaged by traditions, this is a densely imagined, beautiful and deeply troubling book written in heightened prose saturated with imagery. It casts a deep gaze on themes as timeless as love, nationalism and religion, while meditating on how these forces drive us apart.

Book Step Across This Line

Download or read book Step Across This Line written by Salman Rushdie and published by Random House. This book was released on 2002-09-10 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of the great novelists of our day, a vital, brilliant new book of essays, speeches and articles essential for our times. Step Across This Line showcases the other side of one of fiction’s most astonishing conjurors. On display is Salman Rushdie’s incisive, thoughtful and generous mind, in prose that is as entertaining as it is topical. The world is here, captured in pieces on a dazzling array of subjects: from New York’s Amadou Diallo case to the Wizard of Oz, from U2 to fifty years of Indian writing, from a tribute to Angela Carter to the struggle to film Midnight’s Children. The title essay was originally delivered at Yale as the 2002 Tanner lecture on human values, and examines the changing meaning of frontiers in the modern world -- moral and metaphorical frontiers as well as physical ones. The collection chronicles Rushdie’s intellectual journeys, but it is also an intimate invitation into his life: he explores his relationship to India through a moving diary of his first visit there in over a decade, “A Dream of Glorious Return.” Step Across This Line also includes “Messages From the Plague Years,” a historic set of letters, articles and reflections on life under the fatwa. Gathered together for the first time, this is Rushdie’s humane, intelligent and angry response to a grotesque threat, aimed not just at him but at free expression itself. Step Across This Line, Salman Rushdie’s first collection of non-fiction in a decade, has the same energy, imagination and erudition as his astounding novels -- along with some very strong opinions.
