Book The Flotation of Gold and Pyrite from South African Gold mine Residues

Download or read book The Flotation of Gold and Pyrite from South African Gold mine Residues written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At present there are some nineteen flotation plants treating gold-bearing material in South Africa. In some plants, flotation is an integral part of the main process for gold recovery whereas, in others, old dump material or tailings from current ore is treated. In this paper, a brief general survey of flotation plants on gold mines is presented, and then the results of an investigation into the flotation behaviour of gold and pyrite on several selected plants for the retreatment of dumps and of plants for the treatment of tailings from current ore. The intimate association of gold with pyrite made it necessary for the flotation of these minerals to be studied simultaneously. From the size and chemical analysis of the sample material collected from five plants, the following conclusions can be drawn. 1. The gold recovery in the fine size range (smaller than 12 um) can be as high as 80 per cent in those plants treating milled ore. Low gold recoveries in this size range for plants treating tailings can be attributed to the smaller percentage of free gold present, as well as to the presence of fine pyrophyllite in certain plants. 2. The presence of fine pyrophyllite in flotation feeds inhibits the rate of flotation of gold and pyrite. 3. The addition of copper sulphate and a depressant in the flotation of dumps that contain pyrophyllite results in an increased rate of flotation of pyrite, this leading also to improved gold recovery. This result has been substantiated in the laboratory. 4. The rate of gold and pyrite flotation is greater from plants treating coarse milled ore than from plants treating tailings. Consequently, shorter flotation residence times (ie, less total cell volume), and fewer cleaning stages, are required for coarsely milled flotation feeds. 5. Amine collectors can be as effective as xanthate collectors for the recovery of gold and pyrite in alkaline circuits with pH values higher than 10 for coarse-size feeds. An amine collector has the advantage that it does not inhibit the leaching of gold with cyanide as does a xanthate collector. 6. The sulphur limitations on flotation concentrates from gold flotation plants restrict the gold recovery. Lowering of the grade would result in improved gold recoveries in the fine and coarse sizes. Attempts to improve gold recovery on all the gold flotation plants continue; however, there are two areas that need more immediate attention. Firstly, the improved recovery of fine gold, especially from flotation plants using old tailings as feed, need to be considered more thoroughly and, secondly, the design of fluidized-bed roasters to accept lower sulphur concentrates should also be considered. Book Surface Chemistry of Froth Flotation

Download or read book Surface Chemistry of Froth Flotation written by Jan Leja and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The process of froth flotation is an outstanding example of applied surface chemistry. It is extensively used in the mining, mineral, metallurgical, and chemical industries for separation and selective concentration of individual minerals and other solids. Substances so concentrated serve as raw materials for producing appropriate metals and chemicals. The importance of flotation in technology is chiefly due to the ease with which it can be made selective and versatile and to the economy of the process. The objective of this book is to review the fundamentals of surface chemistry together with the relevant aspects of organic and inorganic chemistry that-in the opinion of the author-are important ~ control of the froth flotation process. The review updates the information that had been available in books by Sutherland and Wark (1955), Gaudin (1957), Klassen and Mokrousov (1963), and GIembotsky et al. (1963). It emphasizes mainly the surface chemical aspects of the process, leaving other relevant topics such as hydrodynamics, mechanical and electrical technology, cir cuit design and engineering, operations research, instrumentation tech nology, modeling, etc., to appropriate specialized treatments.

Book Innovations in Flotation Technology

Download or read book Innovations in Flotation Technology written by P. Mavros and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book is the outcome of an Advanced Study Institute meeting, which was held in Kallithea, Chalkidiki, in Northern Greece, from 12-25 May 1991 and attended by 69 delegates from 18 countries. The Institute brought together scientists, engineers and technologists currently involved in basic and applied research on the different aspects of flotation. The Institute covered subjects in four major areas of flotation: a) fundamentals; b) chemical technology aspects; c) mineral processing; and d) water and wastewater treatment. Apart from the papers reproduced in this volume, several short oral communications were also presented. Participants also had the opportunity to visit the Hellenic Chemical Products & Fertilizers Co. Ltd. mixed sulphides plant, in Chalkidiki. Conference participants, whose interest and research projects are in this broad field of science and engineering, provided a well-informed discussion of the problems encountered, as well as possible directions of future technological developments. It is hoped that this book is not only a good record of the presentations made (formal and informal), analyzing the state-of-the-art in flotation, but will also be helpful for students, scientists and technologists working in the fields of separation processes and in particular mineral processing and wastewater engineering. All the invited speakers and the participants made this summer school possible, worthwhile and enjoyable. The sponsorship by the NATO Scientific Affairs Division is gratefully ack nowledged. The Editors would like to thank the members of the Organizing Committee, Dr. B.A.

Book Coordination Principle of Minerals Flotation

Download or read book Coordination Principle of Minerals Flotation written by Jianhua Chen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-15 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of flotation, with selective interaction of reagents with minerals at its core, has greatly advanced the development of modern mining. Ever since, there has been continuous researched into the mechanism of mineral-reagent interactions, in an effort to design and develop more effective reagents. A unique perspective from coordination is presented to illustrate the principles of reagent molecules interacting with metal ions on mineral surface. For the first time, the influence is unveiled of mineral crystal structures and surrounding atoms on metal ion properties and further on mineral-reagent interactions. The introduction of classical theories for modern chemistry, including orbital structure, electron spin and orbital symmetry matching, into flotation is realized. Researchers, engineers and graduate students among others in the field of mineral processing may gain new insight into flotation and the development of novel reagents.
