Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Florist, 1846, Vol. 4 of 6: Or Lady's Journal of Horticulture Again we have the pleasure of addressing our readers on the completion of another volume of the Florists Journal and if ever we had occasion for the expression of gratified sentiments it is now. The principle on which the commencement of our task was founded has been the basis for this the fourth volume and we have cheering assurance it is right It is true we have not given place to every hollow hallucination that has been current or condemned or commended aught but on the authority of our own experience or conviction. But actuated alone by an earnest desire to assist in advancing the scientific portion and to explain or make known the best of the practical part, to reconcile theory with practice, and show how far the one may be made conducive to the well-doing of both, we have proceeded; with this, which has been and will continue our chief aim, uninterruptedly in view. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Florist and Horticultural Journal, 1853, Vol. 2: A Monthly Magazine of Horticulture, Agriculture, Botany, Agricultural Chemistry, Entomology, &C The Home - The best aspect for this, is like the best soil for them, a much debated subject. In a late volume of the Companion to the Flower Garden, I observe that one writer insists on the ad vantages his plants derived from bein g placed in a shady situation on a northern aspect in summer, while another describes the luxu riant and healthy specimens he got by placing them in the full sun, under a south wall In America this latter mode would never do. In a well constructed house a northern aspect is perhaps as good as any; it admits a large amount of light, while it prevents the plants from having their leaves scorched by a sudden burst of sun in win ter or early spring. Arrangements should be made for keeping the house above 36° or 40° in the severest weather; a common well made flue will be effectual where the house is-small, but wherever the size of the house will warrant it, hot water pipes are much bet ter, as the best constructed flue will allow injurious gases to escape at times, more especially where anthracite is used as fuel. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Florist, Vol. 16: A Weekly Journal for the Trade; August 4, 1900 Out at Bowmanville they have jus finished planting a pretty fair sized ros house; it is 175x300 and a man in on corner cannot make a man in the farther corner hear, even if he shout his loudest. Although there is no partition wall in this house, it is, of course, really seven houses, three of the structures having been put up in 1899 and four added this summer. The sash bars are twelve feet on the south side of the ridges, fourteen on the north. A. Dietsch Co. Furnished the material, principally California cedar, which would have been used throughout had it been obtainable at the moment. Mr. Budlong thinks this lumber cheaper than cypress, although it costs more. Of course Adam Sobillo supplied the posts and bench material for the big house, as he is the favorite lumberman for all the big growers north of town. This book was released on 2018-05-05 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Horticultural Register, and Gardener's Magazine, 1839, Vol. 4 With the desire to gratify our readers we shall give some of the reasons, which, to our mind appear the most conclusive. It is gen erally admitted I believe, that they belong to the royal family, and that their ancestors once wielded the sceptre upon the throne of China, and indeed there is every thing in their appearance to sub stentiate this belief. The present Emperor is a descendant of the Tartar race. It would not require a very excursive imagination to conclude that as they did not belong to the present dynasty, some jealousies might have arisen from the fact that they were of that race that once controlled the destinies of that mighty empire, and which was now governed by a foreign power. Again, there might have been those that still retained all their former attachment to the rem nant of that noble house which, no doubt, excited the jealousies of the reigning powers and rendered their situation very unpleasant, and would be deemed a sufficient reason for leaving their native country, as others have done before them. Still there are those that have asked why, as they were so pleasantly situated in Europe, they should have thought of coming to this country. To this and simi lar questions we can only give some of our own conjectures, never having conversed with them upon this subject. We may suppose for instance, that they might have had a predilection in favor ofour own republican form of government and its free institutions, and that they would meet with that kindness and attention which true merit ever receives from an educated and enlightened community. Others might have come to the resolution that a friend of ours did, that they would not live in a country where they were obliged to pay for that free and common gift to all, the light of heaven. Whether these conjectures will satisfy the curiosity of our readers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The American Journal of Horticulture and Florist s Companion 1868

Download or read book The American Journal of Horticulture and Florist s Companion 1868 written by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of Horticulture and Florist's Companion, 1868, Vol. 4 Year by year, the forests in our country are being stripped off, exposing the hills and plains more and more to the fierce, sweeping winds of winter. Springs and brooks have disappeared because of this wholesale destruction of the forests; and trees that were formerly hardy, and produced uniformly good crops, now fail altogether. The peach, that formerly gave in the New-England States a crop almost every year, now fails two years out of three: while the tree is often badly injured by the winter. The same maybe said of other fruit-trees, as well as of ornamental trees, shrubs, and grape-vines. The winter that has just passed has been a peculiarly unfavorable one. From all quarters, we hear complaints that hedges of arborvitæ, hemlock, and other plants, have been badly injured; that standard evergreens which had stood successfully for years have been nearly destroyed; that grapevines in large numbers, and even of those varieties that have been considered perfectly hardy, have been killed; that pear-trees in large numbers have either been killed outright, or so injured that they will bear no fruit, and require a year or two to recuperate.
