Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Flora of Essex County, Massachusetts The following enumeration of the plants of Essex County has been prepared, after a careful examination of the work of the earlier botanists and diligent search in almost every portion of the county for species not previously noticed. With so few persons devoting themselves to the study of botany or the collection of specimens, particularly of the lower orders of plants, it would be impossible to present an absolutely complete list, and perhaps with even the greatest facilities no one has succeeded in so doing for any region. Almost the only extended collection of dried specimens of county plants were those of the late Mr. Oakes, so that there really exists no very great foundation upon which to build other than the herbarium recently collected, and the writings of the more reliable among the earlier botanists, who for nearly a century have now and then appeared upon the scene. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flora of Middlesex County, Massachusetts This catalogue has been a natural outgrowth of the incorporation of the Middlesex Institute in 1881. The results of numerous excursions in the vicinity of Malden encouraged wider research, leading to the exploration of the entire county, with publication in view. Works known to contain lists of county plants have been carefully examined, among which are Bigelow's "Florula Bostoniensis;" Hitchcock's "Report on the Geology, etc., of Mass.;" Emerson's "Trees and Shrubs of Mass.;" a "List of Plants in Malden and Medford;" the "Catalogue of the Davenport Herbarium;" "A partial list of the native flora of Waltham;" a "List of introduced plants found in the vicinity of a wool-scouring establishment" in North Chelmsford, by Rev. W. P. Alcott; and miscellaneous papers in the "Proceedings of the Boston Society of Natural History," Hovey's Magazine, and other publications. The verification of these lists has been no light task. Where 110 specimen exists, where it has been impossible to find the original authority upon which a plant outside its recognized limits has been reported, or where there is a strong probability of wrong determination, the authors have excluded such names from the catalogue, thinking it better to lose several species which may be in the county than admit one which would be justly open to criticism. Various public and private collections have been examined for rare species; while holidays and vacations have been for six years largely devoted to botanical expeditions which have embraced within their scope, though very imperfectly, every section of Middlesex. There are also chapters on the fresh marshes and on the ponds and their birds. These are followed by Chapters on the records from lighthouses along the coast and on the ornithological history of Essex County. In the introduction to the Annotated List, the names of many ornitho logical workers are given who have generously contributed their notes and Observations, and to all of these I wish here to express my sincere thanks. Particularly I wish to thank Mr. William Brewster for the use of his collection and for the identification of doubtful specimens; Mr. Walter Deane for many kindnesses and for reviewing the botanical part of this list; Mr. W. Of the land birds, a few only of the characteristic and interesting ones are treated at any length, such as the Horned Lark, American Crow, Snow Bunting, Lapland Longspur, Ipswich Sparrow, Sharp-tailed Sparrows, the Swal lows, and a few others.
