Book Complex Cobordism and Stable Homotopy Groups of Spheres

Download or read book Complex Cobordism and Stable Homotopy Groups of Spheres written by Douglas C. Ravenel and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2003-11-25 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of its first edition, this book has served as one of the few available on the classical Adams spectral sequence, and is the best account on the Adams-Novikov spectral sequence. This new edition has been updated in many places, especially the final chapter, which has been completely rewritten with an eye toward future research in the field. It remains the definitive reference on the stable homotopy groups of spheres. The first three chapters introduce the homotopy groups of spheres and take the reader from the classical results in the field though the computational aspects of the classical Adams spectral sequence and its modifications, which are the main tools topologists have to investigate the homotopy groups of spheres. Nowadays, the most efficient tools are the Brown-Peterson theory, the Adams-Novikov spectral sequence, and the chromatic spectral sequence, a device for analyzing the global structure of the stable homotopy groups of spheres and relating them to the cohomology of the Morava stabilizer groups. These topics are described in detail in Chapters 4 to 6. The revamped Chapter 7 is the computational payoff of the book, yielding a lot of information about the stable homotopy group of spheres. Appendices follow, giving self-contained accounts of the theory of formal group laws and the homological algebra associated with Hopf algebras and Hopf algebroids. The book is intended for anyone wishing to study computational stable homotopy theory. It is accessible to graduate students with a knowledge of algebraic topology and recommended to anyone wishing to venture into the frontiers of the subject.

In the middle of the South Pacific, a thousand feet below the surface, a huge vessel is unearthed. Rushed to the scene is a team of American scientists who descend together into the depths to investigate the astonishing discovery. What they find defies their imaginations and mocks their attempts at logical explanation. It is a spaceship, but apparently it is undamaged by its fall from the sky. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of this timely, definitive, and popular book continues to pursue the question: what is the most efficient way to pack a large number of equal spheres in n-dimensional Euclidean space? The authors also continue to examine related problems such as the kissing number problem, the covering problem, the quantizing problem, and the classification of lattices and quadratic forms. Like the first edition, the second edition describes the applications of these questions to other areas of mathematics and science such as number theory, coding theory, group theory, analog-to-digital conversion and data compression, n-dimensional crystallography, and dual theory and superstring theory in physics. Results as of 1992 have been added to the text, and the extensive bibliography - itself a contribution to the field - is supplemented with approximately 450 new entries.

The Five Books of Van Gross’s focuses hearkens back to the “Middle Aughts” which is the period that included launching weather crusades, being a "birther" or talking nonsense at Townhall Meetings about "healthcare" (which is really medical care plus a gym membership, glasses and teeth cleaning); here was the mid-Decade of the Zeroes or the zeros, or zorro, the fox so cunning and free, that epoch from 2003-2007, in that Aughts Decade, that Would've, Could've, Should've Oughts Decade, or as some have called it, That Aughtistic Period (or at least an ADD case) demanding an explanation, couched in brain/mind disturbances via satirical essays. This five-volume set containing nearly 500 humor essays opens with They Shoot Lesbians Don’t They? covering most of 2004, followed by Deep Tricksters-From the Felt Man to the Veep Man-November 2004 to June 2005, the executive branch hunting related extravaganza Duck, It's Dick.. Not me Dick, the Duck, June 2005- March 2006 and is followed by Van Gross Misconduct February 2006 to August 2006 and finally Van Maniac September 2006- March 2007. The urgency for this historic volume draws from where we were in the lead up to where we are. Has political and cultural satire dwindled over the century’s first two decades plus? Hardly. And supporting works (essays and poetry) by Van Gross, MD dating back to the Bill Clinton Style impeachment period and post- Five Books works in pre-print that include the pre-teens to mid teen years constituting the sacred Obama period of carefully manufactured total boredom followed by the culminating late teen epoch of Donald Trump which featured our polarization insanity half decade 2016-2020 highlighted by Impeachments Gone Wild. If the country is not formally institutionalized in padded rooms by 2021, the roaring or throat clearing Jabiden ‘20’s should offer opportunities for millions to hop, skip and jump over to their local bookstore or online outlet for Five Books to buttress the smirk packed absurdity that has become the rule in the dawn of this third millennium since Christ sashayed over hills, dales and water staying vigilant for some upcoming Van Gross, MD masterpiece called the Jabiden Chronicles- Crash and Burn by ’29 or Bust, Seems Like Old Times

Book Always Crashing in the Same Car On Art Crisis and Los Angeles California

Download or read book Always Crashing in the Same Car On Art Crisis and Los Angeles California written by Matthew Specktor and published by Tin House Books. This book was released on 2021-07-27 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Best Book of the Year at The Atlantic Los Angeles Times Bestseller "[An] absorbing and revealing book. . . . nestling in the fruitful terrain between memoir and criticism." —Geoff Dyer, author of Out of Sheer Rage Blending memoir and cultural criticism, Matthew Specktor explores family legacy, the lives of artists, and a city that embodies both dreams and disillusionment. In 2006, Matthew Specktor moved into a crumbling Los Angeles apartment opposite the one in which F. Scott Fitzgerald spent the last moments of his life. Fitz had been Specktor’s first literary idol, someone whose own passage through Hollywood had, allegedly, broken him. Freshly divorced, professionally flailing, and reeling from his mother’s cancer diagnosis, Specktor was feeling unmoored. But rather than giving in or “cracking up,” he embarked on an obsessive journey to make sense of the mythologies of “success” and “failure” that haunt the artist’s life and the American imagination. Part memoir, part cultural history, part portrait of place, Always Crashing in the Same Car explores Hollywood through a certain kind of collapse. It’s a vibrant and intimate inspection of failure told through the lives of iconic, if under-sung, artists—Carole Eastman, Eleanor Perry, Warren Zevon, Tuesday Weld, and Hal Ashby, among others—and the author’s own family history. Through this constellation of Hollywood figures, he unearths a fascinating alternate history of the city that raised him and explores the ways in which curtailed ambition, insufficiency, and loss shape all our lives. At once deeply personal and broadly erudite, it is a story of an art form (the movies), a city (Los Angeles), and one person’s attempt to create meaning out of both. Above all, Specktor creates a moving search for optimism alongside the inevitability of failure and reveals the still-resonant power of art to help us navigate the beautiful ruins that await us all.

Book excerpt: Seven Spheres by Rufus Opus Seven Spheres is more than a simple book of traditional Hermetic Magic. It is designed to be a series of rituals that function on many levels to take an average ordinary magician and turn them into a self-actualized powerhouse of proactive reality engineering. It's entirely about attaining initiation and empowerment in the highest levels of un-manifest reality. These experiences and rites result in the release of a floodgate of power that pour down through the layers of progressive manifestation, building up awareness, understanding, and ultimately raw potential as you move from sphere to sphere through the rites, ultimately culminating in the anointing of the magician as Priest-King directing the forces that climax in your personal daily experience of the Joy of your life. This book isn't about physical or spiritual mastery, it is entirely about understanding that you, personally, are beloved, honored, blessed, and highly favored of every intelligence, spirit, angel, and god of every sphere. This is about understanding who you are and what you can accomplish as a human being manifest upon the surface of the Earth. Spiritual enlightenment and material mastery will be yours, if you do the work described. "There are few in the field today that have both technical expertise and a genuine love of the spirits. A man who is as on-fire with the Holy Spirit as a tent-revival preacher, but who can make complex evocation instruction as clear as your ABC's. Rufus Opus is that kind of Priest-Magician. For years he has been making laying down his brand of hermetic magic with style and sass on his blog and in his courses. Now with this book, he will be blowing open the gates for an even wider audience." -Jason Miller, author of Sex, Sorcery, and Spirit "Rufus Opus is a frequent speaker and panelist at Crucible convention that features active magical leaders from known and exotic paradigms. He has shown a great ability to add a combustive dynamic to his life through his own personal workings." -Arthur Moyer, Omnimancer, host of Crucible Convention "Rufus is a well-educated and experienced occultist who firmly knows and strongly communicates his field without scaring or dumbing down for an audience. He is one of my go to authors for collected works on the topic." -Andrei Freeman Note: This book is a stand-alone series of rites that can empower you and change your life if you do the magical rites as described in the book. However, it is also intended to be a textbook for a series of courses provided by Rufus Opus. If you are interested in additional training and more useful information, please contact Rufus at [email protected].
