Book A Complex Culture of the British Columbia Plateau

Download or read book A Complex Culture of the British Columbia Plateau written by Brian Hayden and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early hunter/gatherer societies have traditionally been considered basically egalitarian in nature. This assumption, however, has been challenged by contemporary archaeological and anthropological research, which has demonstrated that many of these societies had complex social, economic, and political structures. This volume considers two British Columbia Native communities -- the Lillooet and Shuswap communities of Fountain and Pavilion - and traces their development into complex societies. The authors explore the relation between resource characteristics and hunter/gatherer adaptations and examine the use of fish, animal, and plant species, documenting their availability and the techniques used in their gathering, processing, and storing. The book also shows how cultural practices, such as raiding, potlatching, and stewardship of resources, can be explained from a cultural ecological point of view. An important contribution to the study of hunting and gathering cultures in the Northwest, this book is the most detailed examination of the subsistence base of a particular hunting and gathering group to date. Its exploration of the reasons why complex hunting and gathering societies emerge, as well as the ecological relationships between cultures and resources, will make an important contribution to the study of cultural ecology and contemporary archaeology.

Book The Entangling Net

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Truly remarkable portraits of courage." -- John van Amerongen, editor, Alaska Fisherman's Journal "These little-known tales of women working in Alaska's commercial fishing industry make for great reading. . . . Readers will be amazed by their stories." -- Laine Welch, Alaska Fish Radio "A richly textured story, a multi-genre text that invites readers to witness women's conversation with America's last frontier, Alaska." -- Patricia Foster, University of Iowa Why do women choose an occupation that has been ranked the most dangerous in the nation? What do women give up--and get in return--when they take on the tasks of fishermen? The Entangling Net explores these issues through the stories of twenty women who have chosen to work in this extremely risky, male-dominated profession. Leslie Leyland Fields lyrically weaves their stories with her own experiences as a fishing woman. She tells of long, exhausting days in skiffs, catching fish in brutally cold weather on waters that are often violent. Her words and those of the women she interviews convey the paradoxical relationship the women have with commercial fishing: they face extraordinarily difficult working conditions made more difficult and dangerous by male crews and skippers who don't welcome women, yet they feel impelled by the challenge of the work to return to their jobs season after season.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fisherman’s Son, set on the rustic and rocky coast of Gloucester, New England’s oldest seaport, is a tale of legal and emotional conflict, passion and a peoples quest for justice. John Palermo, Sicilian by birth, was sent by his dying Papa, alone and terrified, at the tender age of ten, to live with the Amicos in Gloucester. Accepted by a loving family and taken in by a community, wedded to the sea, John grew to cherish and finally to defend his people against those forces who would steal their rights and their dignity. The Fisherman’s Son is a legal thriller with riveting courtroom confrontations where good and evil stand in stark contrast. It is also a love story, in depths both tender and compelling.
