Book Sesame Street Revisited

Download or read book Sesame Street Revisited written by Thomas D. Cook and published by Russell Sage Foundation. This book was released on 1975-09-26 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the course of its television lifetime, "Sesame Street" has taught alphabet-related skills to hundreds of thousands of preschool children. But the program may have attracted more of its regular viewers from relatively affluent homes in which the parents were better educated. Analyzing and reevaluating data drawn from several sources, principally the Educational Testing Service's evaluations of "Sesame Street," the authors of this book open fresh lines of inquiry into how much economically disadvantaged children learned from viewing the series for six months and into whether the program is widening the gap that separates the academic achievement of disadvantaged preschoolers from that of their more affluent counterparts. The authors define as acute dilemma currently facing educational policymakers: what positive results are achieved when a large number of children learn some skills at a younger age if this absolute increase in knowledge is associated with an increase in the difference between social groups?

Book The Vanishing Vision

Download or read book The Vanishing Vision written by James Day and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This spirited history of public television offers an insider's account of its topsy-turvy forty-year odyssey. James Day, a founder of San Francisco's KQED and a past president of New York's WNET, provides a vivid and often amusing behind-the-screens history. Day tells how a program producer, desperate to locate a family willing to live with television cameras for seven months, borrowed a dime—and a suggestion—from a blind date and telephoned the Louds of Santa Barbara. The result was the mesmerizing twelve-hour documentary An American Family. Day relates how Big Bird and his friends were created to spice up Sesame Street when test runs showed a flagging interest in the program's "live-action" segments. And he describes how Frieda Hennock, the first woman appointed to the FCC, overpowered the resistance of her male colleagues to lay the foundation for public television. Day identifies the particular forces that have shaped public television and produced a Byzantine bureaucracy kept on a leash by an untrusting Congress, with a fragmented leadership that lacks a clearly defined mission in today's multimedia environment. Day calls for a bold rethinking of public television's mission, advocating a system that is adequately funded, independent of government, and capable of countering commercial television's "lowest-common-denominator" approach with a full range of substantive programs, comedy as well as culture, entertainment as well as information. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Book American Businesses in China

Download or read book American Businesses in China written by Nancy Lynch Street and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2003 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As more and more American businesses have set up operations in China, American business owners have had to concern themselves with respecting how Chinese values and beliefs and how China's changing economic and political climates relate to the business world. American businesses that have been successful in China, such as General Electric, Children's Television Workshop, Holiday Inn, DaimlerChrysler and the Foxboro Company, to name just a few, know how important a consideration for Chinese culture is in business operations. Their efforts in China are profiled in this work to serve as case studies for others interested in doing business in China. This book also examines the Chinese worldview, a fusion of Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism and communism, and the effects of globalization on business ventures. It also considers the changing nature of Chinese consumerism, highlighting significant differences between urban and rural populations and a distinctive generational divide. It ends by offering some general conclusions as well as suggestions for those interested in doing business in China.
