Book First Steps for Math Olympians

Download or read book First Steps for Math Olympians written by J. Douglas Faires and published by MAA. This book was released on 2006-12-21 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major aspect of mathematical training and its benefit to society is the ability to use logic to solve problems. The American Mathematics Competitions have been given for more than fifty years to millions of students. This book considers the basic ideas behind the solutions to the majority of these problems, and presents examples and exercises from past exams to illustrate the concepts. Anyone preparing for the Mathematical Olympiads will find many useful ideas here, but people generally interested in logical problem solving should also find the problems and their solutions stimulating. The book can be used either for self-study or as topic-oriented material and samples of problems for practice exams. Useful reading for anyone who enjoys solving mathematical problems, and equally valuable for educators or parents who have children with mathematical interest and ability.

A friend received a letter from the American Mathematical Society (AMS) inform ing him that his paper had been accepted for publication in the Proceedings of the AMS. If he submitted it as a lt-TEX document, it would be published in 20 weeks any other format would take almost a year before the appearance in print of the article. The friend had It-T EX installed on his computer on Friday, borrowed the manu script of this book, and mailed a It-T EX version of his article to the AMS on Monday. First Steps in YI'EX is for the mathematician, physicist, engineer, scientist, or technical typist who needs to quickly learn how to write and typeset articles con taining mathematical formulas. A quick introduction to E\TE)C and the AMS enhancements is provided so that you will be ready to prepare your first article (such as the sample articles on pages 53-54 and 67-69) in only a few hours. Specific topics can be found in the table of contents, the Quick Finder, or the index. While the index is Jt.TEX -oriented, the Quick Finder lists the main topics using terminology common to wordprocessing applications. For example, to find out how to italicize text, look under italics in the Quick Finder. Setting the stage Watch someone type a mathematical article in I!lfE)C. You will see how to • Type the document using a text editor to create a Jt.TE)C source file.

Book The First Steps in Seeing

  • Author : Robert W. Rodieck
  • Publisher : Sinauer Associates Incorporated
  • Release : 1998-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780878937578
  • Pages : 562 pages

Download or read book The First Steps in Seeing written by Robert W. Rodieck and published by Sinauer Associates Incorporated. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First Steps in Seeing is about the eyes, and how they capture an image and convert it to the neural messages that ultimately result in visual experience. A full appreciation of how the eyes work is rooted in diverse areas of science-optics; biochemistry and photochemistry; molecular biology, cell biology, neurobiology, and evolutionary biology; psychology and psychophysics. The findings related to vision from any one of these fields are not difficult to understand in themselves, but, in order to be clear and precise, each discipline has developed its own set of words and conceptual relations-in effect, its own language-and for those wanting a broad introduction to vision these separate languages can present more of an impediment to understanding than an aid. However, what lies beneath these words usually has a beautiful simplicity, and it is the aim of The First Steps in Seeing to describe how we see in a manner that is understandable to all. In this book, the use of technical terms is restricted, and several hundred full-color illustrations ensure that the terms that are used are associated with a picture, icon, or graph that visually expresses their meaning. Experimental findings have been recast in terms of the natural world whenever possible, and broad themes bring together lines of thought that are often treated separately. Fourteen main chapters form a "thread" that tells the main scientific story and can be read without specialized knowedge or reliance on other sources. This thread is linked to fourteen discussions which explore certain crucial topics in greater depth. Notes link the material presented in the thread and in the special topics discussions to important review articles and seminal research papers. The First Steps in Seeing is an innovative, authoritative work that belongs in the library of anyone with an interest in visual perception.

Book The First Steps in Number Classic Reprint

Download or read book The First Steps in Number Classic Reprint written by G. A. Wentworth and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Steps in Number The object of this book is to provide teachers with a record of the work done in number in the primary schools of to-day. There has been no attempt at novelty in the subject-matter, in the arrangement of work, or in the manner of presentation. The whole is on a constructive basis. Numbers are chief; processes subordinate. What has been found to be more easily understood precedes the more difficult, without respect to its scientific relation. Fractions present no greater difficulty than wholes, so they accompany the teaching of integral numbers from the beginning. The law of dependence has been carefully observed, although at first glance the arrangement may not seem to warrant this assertion. The object of every teacher is so to present numbers that the mind of the child may grasp firmly the facts concerning them, and hold these facts tenaciously by the law of association. Success lies in requiring the child to show what he is talking about, and in following the "step by step" rule. The book illustrates these two principles. It abounds in examples which have not before appeared in print, and which are calculated to interest the child from their close connection with his varied experiences. It gives suggestions for versatility of drill, and illustrates in detail the teaching of a hundred topics. It is expected that the work to the number ten will be taken in one year, the work to twenty in another year, and the remainder of the courseoutlined in the book will be covered in two years more. A child's book accompanies thisedition, which the child may use with great advantage after he becomes acquainted with figures. It is hoped that this book will find a welcome among all persons interested in leading children by easy and sure paths to a knowledge of numbers.
