Download or read book From Oral to Literate Culture written by Peter A. Roberts and published by Kingston, Jamaica : Press University of the West Indies. This book was released on 1997 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents the movement from an oral to a literate culture in the West Indies with the English language as central to this movement. The period examined, from the start of the first English settlement in the islands up to the time of Emancipation, was the period which established the foundations of West Indian society. The study relates the movement towards a literate culture to the development of methods of communication in the plantation slave society, to general literary and intellectual development, and to the expansion of formal education. Literacy in English is regarded as a barometer of social development because the English language was sustained internally and externally as the language of those who ruled and, contrary to fundamental notions associated with the power of literacy, it maintained privilege within certain sectors of the society. There is no other study which provides the interdisciplinary approach of this work in accounting for the development of literate culture in the West Indies.

Download or read book Colonial British Caribbean Newspapers written by Howard S. Pactor and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1990-07-24 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a milestone achievement in the documentation of the newspapers of the British Caribbean islands, a field that, until now, has been neglected by many scholars. The existing and bygone papers, and several commonly unknown publications, listed in this work provide a wealth of information about these obscure times. No other work, before this one, has been as extensive in its documentation and coverage of the individual papers. Of special assistance is the index, which completes the work. This bibliography seeks to determine the extent of newspaper publications in the British Caribbean colonies and to organize it into a useful form. In the past, researchers have either ignored or given brief and scattered coverage to this information, but with Colonial British Caribbean Newspapers, Pactor hopes to make this information available to scholars. His book lists information about the known newspapers of the British Colonial Caribbean, arranged alphabetically by colony and chronologically within each colony. Dates of publications and names of editors, publishers, and owners are given, if known. The newspapers are also listed in an index. It is hoped that a work of this sort may make access to these newspapers easier for scholarly research and call attention to the need to find and preserve these fragile resources. Historians, sociologists, and mass communication scholars will be especially appreciative of Pactor's efforts.
Download or read book Early Printing in Saint Vincent written by Gregory Frohnsdorff and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although academic interest in the Caribbean region's history and culture has increased in recent years, past studies of West Indian printing history have failed to focus on Saint Vincent, resulting in sketchy and inaccurate information regarding printing on the island. Correcting that oversight, this book reveals that printing began in Kingstown as early as 1767, and it traces the island's printing history through 1834, the year slavery was abolished in the British West Indies. Several early printers are identified, including William Smith, Joseph Berrow, James Adams, J. T. Calliard, John Drape, and Thomas LeGall, and details about them and some of their publications are provided. Newspapers and official documents such as acts and proclamations are shown to have been the main products of the island's presses. The book discusses the use of slaves by printers, touches on other race-related matters, and provides insight into an 1830s battle for the right to serve as the island's government printer.Few early Saint Vincent imprints are known to have survived, but Early Printing in Saint Vincent includes an annotated list of more than 250 items printed in Saint Vincent prior to 1835, thus helping to close a large gap that has existed in West Indian bibliography. The book concludes with examples of Saint Vincent advertisements and an index. Illustrated in black and white.

Download or read book Printing and the Book Trade in the West Indies written by Roderick Cave and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The division of the Caribbean islands between the major European powers resulted in the growth of a number of regional presses, providing the colonists with the reading matter they would have expected from their countries of origin. The differing attitudes of the colonial powers towards the press is evident both in the date when printing was first introduced in the colonies, and the number and type of works subsequently issued. Over the last twenty years Professor Cave's research has done much to clarify the development of printing in the West Indies. This volume brings together for the first time his work on the subject, with the addition of seven papers which have previously not been generally available. The author is principally concerned with printing in the English-speaking islands of the Caribbean, in particular with Jamaica, but there are also articles on printing in the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, the Dutch West Indies, Grenada and Trinidad. The parallels with early printing in the North American colonies are particularly important. Professor Cave has contributed an introduction and additional notes which draw attention to fresh material subsequently discovered. There is an index and bibliography.
