Book The Works of Shakespeare

Download or read book The Works of Shakespeare written by R. P. Cowl and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Shakespeare: The First Part of King Henry the Fourth The first aim of this edition has been to give a sound text of the play. The text is conservative, being based upon that of the first Quarto. Secondly, in the critical apparatus is given a selection of varies lectiones, sufficiently numerous to illustrate the relations of Quartos and Folios, and of the chief emendations of later editors. I have collated the Quartos and the first Folio, but for readings of the later Folios and of subsequent editors I have used the collation of the Cambridge edition. Reference is made to the various Quartos as Q 1, Q 2, etc., to the first Folio as F, and to the subsequent Folios as F 2, F 3, F 4. Qq means all Quartos, and Ff all Folios. Thirdly, the foot-notes supply a commentary to the play and illustrations of the poets thought and language. By the end of the seventeenth century the play had been issued in eight Quarto editions and in the four Folios. The following are the titles of the first five Quartos. Book excerpt: This teaching edition of Shakespeare's The First Part of King Henry the Fourth responds to the needs of instructors using a variety of approaches to Shakespeare, including historical and cultural studies approaches. The play is accompanied by 6 sets of primary documents and illustrations thematically arranged to offer a richly textured understanding of early modern culture and Shakespeare's work within that culture. The texts include facsimiles of period documents, excerpts from the chronicle accounts of English history, conduct book literature, military manuals, descriptions of the early modern theater and other entertainments, and literary works presenting alternative versions of Shakespeare's play. The documents and illustrations contextualize the play's treatment of history, civic order and rebellion, authority, the idea of honor, the feminine, the education of a prince, and revelry at the margins of culture. Download or read book The first Part of Henry the Sixt Illustrated written by William Shakespeare and published by BookRix. This book was released on 2014-03-28 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry VI, Part 1 (often written as 1 Henry VI), is a history play by William Shakespeare, and possibly Thomas Nashe, believed to have been written in 1591, and set during the lifetime of King Henry VI of England. Whereas 2 Henry VI deals with the King's inability to quell the bickering of his nobles, and the inevitability of armed conflict, and 3 Henry VI deals with the horrors of that conflict, 1 Henry VI deals with the loss of England's French territories and the political machinations leading up to the Wars of the Roses, as the English political system is torn apart by personal squabbles and petty jealousy. Although the Henry VI trilogy may not have been written in chronological order, the three plays are often grouped together with Richard III to form a tetralogy covering the entire Wars of the Roses saga, from the death of Henry V in 1422 to the rise to power of Henry VII in 1485. It was the success of this sequence of plays that firmly established Shakespeare's reputation as a playwright.
