Book excerpt: Hiroshima is the story of six people—a clerk, a widowed seamstress, a physician, a Methodist minister, a young surgeon, and a German Catholic priest—who lived through the greatest single manmade disaster in history. In vivid and indelible prose, Pulitzer Prize–winner John Hersey traces the stories of these half-dozen individuals from 8:15 a.m. on August 6, 1945, when Hiroshima was destroyed by the first atomic bomb ever dropped on a city, through the hours and days that followed. Almost four decades after the original publication of this celebrated book, Hersey went back to Hiroshima in search of the people whose stories he had told, and his account of what he discovered is now the eloquent and moving final chapter of Hiroshima.

Book How McGruff and the Crying Indian Changed America

Download or read book How McGruff and the Crying Indian Changed America written by Wendy Melillo and published by Smithsonian Institution. This book was released on 2023-08-08 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pulitzer Prize nominated journalist Wendy Melillo authors the first book to explore the history of the Ad Council and the campaigns that brought public service announcements to the nation through the mass media. How McGruff and the Crying Indian Changed America: A History of Iconic Ad Council Campaigns details how public service advertising campaigns became part of our national conversation and changed us as a society. The Ad Council began during World War II as a propaganda arm of President Roosevelt's administration to preserve its business interests. Happily for the ad industry, it was a double play: the government got top-notch work; the industry got an insider relationship that proved useful when warding off regulation. From Rosie the Riveter to Smokey Bear to McGruff the Crime Dog, How McGruff and the Crying Indian Changed America explores the issues and campaigns that have been paramount to the nation's collective memory and looks at challenges facing public service campaigns in the current media environment.

Book The Naked Communist Cold War Modernism and the Politics of Popular Culture

Download or read book The Naked Communist Cold War Modernism and the Politics of Popular Culture written by Roland Vegso and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Naked Communist argues that the political ideologies of modernity were fundamentally determined by four basic figures: the world, the enemy, the secret, and the catastrophe. While the "world" names the totality that functioned as the ultimate horizon of modern political imagination, the three other figures define the necessary limits of this totality by reflecting on the limits of representation. The book highlights the enduring presence of these figures in the modern imagination through detailed analysis of a concrete historical example: American anti-Communist politics of the 1950s. Its primary objective is to describe the internal mechanisms of what we could call an anti-Communist "aesthetic ideology." The book thus traces the way anti-Communist popular culture emerged in the discourse of Cold War liberalism as a political symptom of modernism. Based on a discursive analysis of American anti-Communist politics, the book presents parallel readings of modernism and popular fiction from the 1950s (nuclear holocaust novels, spy novels, and popular political novels) in order to show that, despite the radical separation of the two cultural fields, they both participated in a common ideological program.

Book excerpt: Morality and Modern Warfare is a thought-provoking and insightful exploration of one of the most pressing ethical issues of our time. Written by William J. Nagle, a respected scholar and expert on ethics and war, this book challenges readers to consider the complex moral dilemmas that arise in the context of modern warfare. In this book, Nagle provides a detailed analysis of the ethical challenges facing soldiers, policymakers, and civilians in today's conflicts, from drone warfare and cyber warfare to the use of torture and targeted assassinations. He explores the tensions between national security and individual rights, as well as the moral implications of new technologies and strategies of warfare. Drawing on a wealth of historical and contemporary examples, Nagle argues that a nuanced and critical approach to morality in modern warfare is essential. He contends that a deeper understanding of the ethical dimensions of war can help us to develop more effective and just policies and practices. With its rigorous analysis and clear writing, Morality and Modern Warfare is an essential read for anyone interested in the ethics of war and the challenges of contemporary conflict. It is a valuable resource for scholars, students, policymakers, and anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of the moral complexities of modern warfare.

  • Author : Paul Boyer
  • Publisher : Univ of North Carolina Press
  • Release : 2005-10-21
  • ISBN : 0807875708
  • Pages : 465 pages

Download or read book By the Bomb s Early Light written by Paul Boyer and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2005-10-21 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1985, By the Bomb's Early Light is the first book to explore the cultural 'fallout' in America during the early years of the atomic age. Paul Boyer argues that the major aspects of the long-running debates about nuclear armament and disarmament developed and took shape soon after the bombing of Hiroshima. The book is based on a wide range of sources, including cartoons, opinion polls, radio programs, movies, literature, song lyrics, slang, and interviews with leading opinion-makers of the time. Through these materials, Boyer shows the surprising and profoundly disturbing ways in which the bomb quickly and totally penetrated the fabric of American life, from the chillingly prophetic forecasts of observers like Lewis Mumford to the Hollywood starlet who launched her career as the 'anatomic bomb.' In a new preface, Boyer discusses recent changes in nuclear politics and attitudes toward the nuclear age.
