Book Revolutionary Russia 1891 1991

Download or read book Revolutionary Russia 1891 1991 written by Orlando Figes and published by Metropolitan Books. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of A People's Tragedy, an original reading of the Russian Revolution, examining it not as a single event but as a hundred-year cycle of violence in pursuit of utopian dreams In this elegant and incisive account, Orlando Figes offers an illuminating new perspective on the Russian Revolution. While other historians have focused their examinations on the cataclysmic years immediately before and after 1917, Figes shows how the revolution, while it changed in form and character, nevertheless retained the same idealistic goals throughout, from its origins in the famine crisis of 1891 until its end with the collapse of the communist Soviet regime in 1991. Figes traces three generational phases: Lenin and the Bolsheviks, who set the pattern of destruction and renewal until their demise in the terror of the 1930s; the Stalinist generation, promoted from the lower classes, who created the lasting structures of the Soviet regime and consolidated its legitimacy through victory in war; and the generation of 1956, shaped by the revelations of Stalin's crimes and committed to "making the Revolution work" to remedy economic decline and mass disaffection. Until the very end of the Soviet system, its leaders believed they were carrying out the revolution Lenin had begun. With the authority and distinctive style that have marked his magisterial histories, Figes delivers an accessible and paradigm-shifting reconsideration of one of the defining events of the twentieth century.

Download or read book Bayport Heritage written by Bayport Heritage Association and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1997-08-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bayport, a small town on the south shore of Long Island, is the very embodiment of a village that has retained the charm and allure that once drew summer visitors at the end of the nineteenth century. Since Bayport is situated on the Great South Bay, most of its 8,000 residents revel in the view of Fire Island, that slender strand known as a barrier beach, that keeps the Atlantic Ocean honest and where it belongs. Although the history of Bayport reaches back to its origin in 1786 with William Nicoll's conveyance of inherited lands (celebrated in 1986 by a bicentennial ceremony), the pictorial history shown herein starts in 1825 with a photograph of the second wooden schoolhouse in Bayport and a line drawing of the same.

Book Numbers and Narratives

Download or read book Numbers and Narratives written by Wray Vamplew and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-11-08 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume argues for a more quantitative, economic and theoretical approach to sports history. The author notes that sport can have peculiar economics as in no other industry do rival businesses have to cooperate to produce a sellable output. He also demonstrates, via a case study of early gate-money football in Scotland, that sports producers were not always seeking profits, and often put winning games and trophies ahead of making money. Another analysis examines how industrialisation affected sport, how sport became an industry in its own right and how the workplace became a major provider of sports facilities. A look at third sector economics highlights how the popularity of football provided an ideal vehicle for charity fundraising. The book observes that most sports participants are amateurs but at the elite level the paid player has a key role, and this is assessed through case studies of the jockey and the golf professional. Finally, the author discusses and evaluates various theories relating to the historical development of the sports club. This book was originally published as a special issue of Sport in Society: Cultures, Commerce, Media, Politics.

Book excerpt: The First 100 Years tells the story from 1907 to 2007 of the First Baptist Church of Passtown and the African American Community of Hayti in Coatesville, Pennsylvania. The church members and residents tell their stories in words and pictures during the milestone 100th Anniversary of the First Baptist Church of Passtown in 2007. There are many historical Hayti communities throughout the United States. In this Hayti community, families migrating from the South found an oasis and have been neighbors and friends for over 100 years. Whether researching segregated schools in a northern state; or family members who migrated from the South to work in a steel town; or history contained in the books written by Hayti residents; you may find the answer inside, on the pages of this book. The surprise connections fell from the sky. What began as a small, local history of our church and community has yielded so much more historical texture. The years tell us much that the days never knew - Ralph Waldo Emerson Welcome to Hayti and the First Baptist Church of Passtown!

Book Queen of the Court

Download or read book Queen of the Court written by Madeleine Blais and published by Atlantic Monthly Press. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Madeleine Blais, the dramatic and colorful story of legendary tennis star and international celebrity, Alice Marble In August 1939, Alice Marble graced the cover of Life magazine, photographed by the famed Alfred Eisenstaedt. She was a glamorous worldwide celebrity, having that year won singles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles tennis titles at both Wimbledon and the US Open, then an unprecedented feat. Yet today one of America’s greatest female athletes and most charismatic characters is largely forgotten. Queen of the Court places her back on center stage. Born in 1913, Marble grew up in San Francisco; her favorite sport, baseball. Given a tennis racket at age 13, she took to the sport immediately, rising to the top with a powerful, aggressive serve-and-volley style unseen in women’s tennis. A champion at the height of her fame in the late 1930s, she also designed a clothing line in the off-season and sang as a performer in the Sert Room of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York to rave reviews. World War II derailed her amateur tennis career, but her life off the court was, if anything, even more eventful. She wrote a series of short books about famous women. She turned professional and joined a pro tour during the War, entertaining and inspiring soldiers and civilians alike. Ever glamorous and connected, she had a part in the 1952 Tracy and Hepburn movie Pat and Mike, and she played tennis with the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Marlene Dietrich, and her great friends, Clark Gable and Carole Lombard. However, perhaps her greatest legacy lies in her successful efforts, working largely alone, to persuade the all-white US Lawn Tennis Association to change its policy and allow African American star Althea Gibson to compete for the US championship in 1950, thereby breaking tennis’s color barrier. In two memoirs, Marble also showed herself to be an at-times unreliable narrator of her own life, which Madeleine Blais navigates skillfully, especially Marble’s dramatic claims of having been a spy during World War II. In Queen of the Court, the author of the bestselling In These Girls, Hope Is a Muscle recaptures a glittering life story.

  • Pages : 212 pages

Book excerpt: On the short list for the 2000 USGA International Book Award for "outstanding golf book of the year," Links Golf: The Inside Story describes the beautiful land on which the links courses are built. Daley explains the term "links" and discusses their architecture, style, and great clusters. This behind-the-scenes look at the health of links golf in Britain puts an emphasis on elements that are undermining its viability and long-term future. In a time when many treeless courses are claiming to be genuine, Daley explains how to determine what is and what is not a links course. Concentrating on Great Britain and Ireland, he also discusses the vague definition of "links." He examines the unique characteristics of this early form of seaside golf, how geological processes helped shaped the land, and how links golf differs from inland golf.
