Book The First Century of Methodism in Canada Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The First Century of Methodism in Canada Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by J. E. Sanderson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Century of Methodism in Canada, Vol. 2 This Volume continues the record of Methodist doings in Canada from 1840 to the grand Union of 1883. In the closing chapters will be found welcome contributions from the pens of the Rev. Robert Cade, D. D., the Rev. James M. Simpson, and the late Rev. George Webber, regarding their several Churches. All the Uniting Churches are also represented in our comprehensive portrait gallery, according to their numbers at the time of Union. The ministers are placed according to the date of their entrance. The women as well as the men who were known in active church work before the close of this volume have here at least a representation. This was done under the oversight of seven wise men, and their desire to be liberal taxed the generosity of the Publishers to the utmost limit - "a hundred and fifty and three" - though they would have gladly included hundreds more, had it been possible. We trust these will be accepted simply as representatives of "the great multitude which no man can number." In Volume I. a few corrections are necessary: The engraving, "Grave of Paul and Barbara Heck," was intended to face page 46, where the place of burial - Augusta - is correctly stated. On page 63, 3rd line, read Madden; page 119, last line, James should be Thomas; page 216, near the bottom - "On December 18th a meeting was held at Saltfleet attended by David Culp," etc. For careful reading of Ms. the Author is very specially indebted to the Rev. Geo. H. Cornish, L.L.D. With thanks to God for life and health to finish this work, it is now committed to the members and friends of the Methodist Church, as an appreciation of the character and work of the Church, and an earnest effort to tell to our own and succeeding generations something of what the Lord has done. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Century of Methodism in Canada, Vol. 1: 1775-1839 In this narrative an effort has been made to compress within reasonable limits the most interesting and memorable events of early Canadian Methodism. It has not been thought necessary to trace its ancestry in other lands. The starting-point - Newfoundland - might be thought outside the legitimate sphere of Canadian church history, but the geographical and historical relations of the Island forbid its exclusion. In attempting a record of the earliest years of any people or church, the annalist is apt to find a scarcity of material suitable to his purpose. By careful use, however, of all available aids, the author has endeavored to present, with somewhat of photographic adjustment and relation, a picture of those early days. The country, the people, the government, and secular life generally, influence in so many ways the Church's activities as to demand a place in the setting. Selection and condensation have been made the rule; parentheses, usually receptacles for the unnecessary, have been excluded; foot-notes and even references, except when important and admissible in the text, have been avoided. Brief synopses, with strict fidelity to the original, and'indicated by single inverted commas, frequently take the place of lengthy articles. The publication of the "Stations" has seemed the most effective way of giving a comprehensive view of the enlarging field and the increasing laborers. Book A History of Methodism in the United States Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Methodism in the United States Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by James M. Buckley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Methodism in the United States, Vol. 1 of 2 The following catalogue, arranged alphabetically under authors' names, includes but a minority of the volumes consulted in the preparation of this work. In some instances they have been published in various editions and by several publishers. Next to the official journals and other documents of the different denominations, the most important authorities are the personal journals of Wesley, Coke, Asbury, Garrettson, and other founders; the histories of Jesse Lee, Nathan Bangs, and Abel Stevens, in particular the last-named, whose works are invaluable and deserve the everlasting gratitude of both English and American Methodism. Bond, Emory, and Wakeley rendered valuable service; and Neely and Tigert pursued, in the order of time in which their names are placed, important investigations into the subjects comprehended under the titles of their works, and displayed the results in a clear and comprehensive manner. "The Wesley Memorial Volume," edited by Clark, and the "Lives of Methodist Bishops," edited by Flood and Hamilton, are very useful, the latter containing an immense amount of information in small compass. The special histories of the various branches of American Methodism, and the biographies of their founders, are indispensable. Among the biographies none surpasses Paine's "Life of McKendree," which is a mine of antiquarian knowledge and a repository of the writings of McKendree, Soule, and other controlling minds among those who gave Methodism its final forms. The "History of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South," by Gross Alexander, treats many interesting phases of the life and growth of that body, and afforded aid in investigations required by the plan of this work. The works of Lucius C. Matlack on the slavery controversy admirably fill a place occupied by no other productions. The reports of different organizations, the minutes of Annual Conferences, the "Methodist Magazine," the reviews, and the files of the weekly periodicals of American Methodism have been searched, and a large mass of unpublished epistolary correspondence and other manuscript examined. It is believed that the bibliography here given will afford sufficient indication to those who may desire to examine authorities.
