Book A Church Built on the Rock

Download or read book A Church Built on the Rock written by Ken Riedl and published by Ken Riedl. This book was released on 2003-04-01 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 150-Year History of St. Henry's Catholic Church, Watertown,Wisconsin. 1853-2003. The only previous history of St. Henry’s Catholic Church of Watertown was written in German in 1903, at the time of the 50th anniversary of the congregation. One hundred years later, a new and comprehensive history of the congregation has been written to coincide with the 150th anniversary of St. Henry’s. The product of over two years of research, this updated history documents and adds perspective to the significant achievement of the one and one-half centuries of the church itself and also of the faith and devotion of its members over the years. Making lighthearted use of names of books of the Bible to organize the content of this history, the author covers all aspects of the history of St. Henry’s: the church, school, parish center, rectory, and cemetery; the societies and organizations; the varied religious services; the few absolute commands of Christ and the many rules of the Church; the devotions that nurtured one’s religious life and also the events that tested one’s faith. Particular emphasis is placed on the early decades of the 150 year history.

Book The Encyclopedia of New York City

Download or read book The Encyclopedia of New York City written by Kenneth T. Jackson and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 1582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering an exhaustive range of information about the five boroughs, the first edition of The Encyclopedia of New York City was a success by every measure, earning worldwide acclaim and several awards for reference excellence, and selling out its first printing before it was officially published. But much has changed since the volume first appeared in 1995: the World Trade Center no longer dominates the skyline, a billionaire businessman has become an unlikely three-term mayor, and urban regeneration—Chelsea Piers, the High Line, DUMBO, Williamsburg, the South Bronx, the Lower East Side—has become commonplace. To reflect such innovation and change, this definitive, one-volume resource on the city has been completely revised and expanded. The revised edition includes 800 new entries that help complete the story of New York: from Air Train to E-ZPass, from September 11 to public order. The new material includes broader coverage of subject areas previously underserved as well as new maps and illustrations. Virtually all existing entries—spanning architecture, politics, business, sports, the arts, and more—have been updated to reflect the impact of the past two decades. The more than 5,000 alphabetical entries and 700 illustrations of the second edition of The Encyclopedia of New York City convey the richness and diversity of its subject in great breadth and detail, and will continue to serve as an indispensable tool for everyone who has even a passing interest in the American metropolis.

Book Planning and Achieving Successful Student Affairs Facilities Projects

Download or read book Planning and Achieving Successful Student Affairs Facilities Projects written by Jerry Price and published by Jossey-Bass. This book was released on 2003-04-02 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here's a breakthrough sourcebook that not only argues that student affairs professionals need to assume leadership roles in campus facilities issues, but also provides step-by-step guidelines in building a successful facility project from the first brainstorming session to the final coat of paint. Editor Jerry Price, dean of students at Drake University, and contributors from all walks of the student affairs profession demonstrate that student affairs professionals are in a unique position of understanding the role of the campus in environment in students' lives. Chapters explore balancing multiple needs through innovative facility design, options for financing residence hall renovation and construction, and the relationship between housing programs and facilities and the institution's education mission. Applicable information on assembling the project team, the role of communication, and ten key lessons for facilities planning, renovation, and building are also presented. Lessons learned in the field are explored as well. The UConn 2000 Initiative Case Study tells the story of one institution's success in developing and implementing a public policy initiative that would lead to billions of dollars in renewed investment in the university's core infrastructure. Student affairs professionals live with students, see how they interact with one another, hear why they picked this particular school, and listen to the reasons they are succeeding or failing. Their education and experience lie in understanding how residence halls, student unions, dining services, recreation and wellness centers, and campus grounds each affect students' experience in different ways. This book demonstrates conclusively that the valuable expertise of student affairs professionals is therefore critical to ensuring that campus facilities projects ultimately achieve their intended goals.

Book Are Prisons Obsolete

Download or read book Are Prisons Obsolete written by Angela Y. Davis and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2011-01-04 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With her characteristic brilliance, grace and radical audacity, Angela Y. Davis has put the case for the latest abolition movement in American life: the abolition of the prison. As she quite correctly notes, American life is replete with abolition movements, and when they were engaged in these struggles, their chances of success seemed almost unthinkable. For generations of Americans, the abolition of slavery was sheerest illusion. Similarly, the entrenched system of racial segregation seemed to last forever, and generations lived in the midst of the practice, with few predicting its passage from custom. The brutal, exploitative (dare one say lucrative?) convict-lease system that succeeded formal slavery reaped millions to southern jurisdictions (and untold miseries for tens of thousands of men, and women). Few predicted its passing from the American penal landscape. Davis expertly argues how social movements transformed these social, political and cultural institutions, and made such practices untenable. In Are Prisons Obsolete?, Professor Davis seeks to illustrate that the time for the prison is approaching an end. She argues forthrightly for "decarceration", and argues for the transformation of the society as a whole.

Book Conceiving the Christian College

Download or read book Conceiving the Christian College written by Duane Litfin and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2004-09-24 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed to help those who are interested in Christian higher education explore anew the unique features, opportunities, and contemporary challenges of one distinct type of educational institution -- the Christian college. What distinguishes Conceiving the Christian College from the many other books on this subject is its incisive discussion of a set of crucial ideas widely misunderstood in the world of Christian higher education. Now serving in his eleventh year as president of one of the nation's foremost Christian colleges, Duane Litfin is well placed to ask pressing questions regarding faith-based education. What is unique about Christian colleges? What is required to sustain them? How do they maintain their bearing in the tumultuous intellectual seas of the twenty-first century? Litfin's themes are large, but they are meant to refocus the conceptual challenges to Christian education in ways that will strengthen both the academic environment of today's Christian colleges and their impact on culture at large.
