Download or read book Grains written by Bill Winders and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grains - particularly maize, rice, and wheat - are the central component of most people’s diets, but we rarely stop to think about the wider role they play in national and international policy-making, as well as global issues like food security, biotechnology, and even climate change. But why are grains so important and ubiquitous? What political conflicts and economic processes underlie this dominance? Who controls the world’s supply of grains and with what outcomes? In this timely book, Bill Winders unravels the complex story of feed and food grains in the global economy. Highlighting the importance of corporate control and divisions between grains - such as who grows them, and who consumes them - he shows how grains do not represent a unitary political and economic force. Whilst the differences between them may seem small, they can lead to competing economic interests and policy preferences with serious and, on occasions, violent geopolitical consequences. This richly detailed and authoritative guide will be of interest to students across the social sciences, as well as anyone interested in current affairs.

Book excerpt: The American Nation makes available, in one volume, many of the most crucial documents necessary for understanding the variety of policies and viewpoints driving American public life during an important, substantive part of American history. The primary sources in The American Nation are relevant to the Civil War, Reconstruction, the rise of a national capitalist system and culture, the waves of reform-minded thought and policy that moved the nation toward formation of the national administrative and welfare states, and Americaʹs emergence as a major power on the world stage. This period was a watershed in the history of the nation -- the time of establishing and consolidating national power and laying the foundations of a national government committed to promoting the material well-being of Americans. It was an era that witnessed the development of the nation-state and the establishment of the New Deal regime, which set the stage for the radical social movements of the 1960s and beyond.

Panda and published by ASIA PACIFIC BUSINESS PRESS Inc.. This book was released on 2024-01-01 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electroplating and Electrochemicals, industries shimmering with growth and profitability potential, are truly riveting. Electroplating, an intricate process, involves the electrodeposition of a svelte metallic stratum onto diverse substrates utilizing electric currents. This technique entails submerging the intended object, the substrate, into an electrolytic bath brimming with metal ions and, through the application of an electric current, achieves a homogeneous metallic veneer. Conversely, Electrochemicals are birthed from electrochemical reactions. These intricate reactions are characterized by the transference of electrons among distinct compounds within an electrolytic milieu. Through the deliberate orchestration of electron flow, a plethora of chemical reactions are catalyzed, culminating in the synthesis of targeted chemicals. This methodology finds its application across a spectrum of industries, encompassing pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and energy storage sectors. The global electroplating market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5%. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for electroplated products from various end-use industries, such as automotive, electrical & electronics, aerospace & defense, Jewellery and machinery parts & components. In addition, the growing awareness about corrosion protection and decorative finishes is also propelling the growth of this market. This book contains in-depth information about Electrochemical Processing, Metal Surface Treatment, Electroless Plating, Electroplating, Electroplating of Aluminium, Cadmium, Chromium, Cobalt, Copper, Gold, Iron, Lead, Nickel, Bright Nickel, Silver, Alloy, Platinum, Palladium, Rhodium, Bright Zinc, Tin, Plastics, Barrel, Zinc Electroplating Brightener, Metal Treatments, Electrodeposition of Precious Metals, Electropolishing of Stainless Steel, Case Hardening, Electroless Coating of (Gold, Silver), Buffing and Industrial Metal Polishing Compounds, Aluminium, Gold and Its Compounds, Complex Salts of (Copper, Silver and Gold), Hydrides of Silicon, Chemical and Electrochemical Conversion Treatments, Electrostatic Sealing. Download or read book Comets and the Origin of Life written by Cyril Ponnamperuma and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The return of Halley's Cornet in 1986 has generated much ex citement in the scientific community with preparations already afoot for an International Cornet Watch and a cornet launch by the European Space Community, the Japanese and Soviet Space Scientists. The meet ing held at the University of Maryland in October 1980 was primarily stimulated by the preparations for further study of this cornet and by one of the most important unanswered questions related to comets, name ly, whether they may have made a eontribution to the origin of life on earth. Our un"derstanding of the role of comets in the origin of life must necessarily come from our studies of the astronomy and the chem istry of comets. Some clues to the processes which led to the for mation of organic molecules and eventually to the appearance of life have come from these studies of comets, perhaps the most ancient of all objects in our solar system. Whether there is, however, a biology of comets still remains to be seen, although some claims have been made that perhaps comets might themselves provide an environment for even the beginnings of life. Scientists with the latest available information on comets and differing opinions as to the role of comets in the origin of life attended this symposium. The formal papers presented are now being made available to the students of chemical evolution within the pages of this volume.

Download or read book The Bell Beaker Transition in Europe written by Maria Pilar Prieto Martínez and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2015-10-31 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Could the circulation of objects or ideas and the mobility of artisans explain the unprecedented uniformity of the material culture observed throughout the whole of Europe? The 17 papers presented here offer a range of new and different perspectives on the Beaker phenomenon across Europe. The focus is not on Bell Beaker pottery but on social groups (craft specialists, warriors, chiefs, extended or nuclear families), using technological studies and physical anthropology to understand mobility patterns during the 3rd millennium BC. Chronological evolution is used to reconstruct the rhythm of Bell Beaker diffusion and the environmental background that could explain this mobility and the socioeconomic changes observed during this period of transition toward Bronze Age societies. The chapters are mainly organized geographically, covering Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean shores and the Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula, includes some areas that are traditionally studied and well known, such as France, the British Isles or Central Europe, but also others that have so far been considered peripheral, such as Norway, Denmark or Galicia. This journey not only offers a complex and diverse image of Bell Beaker societies but also of a supra-regional structure that articulated a new type of society on an unprecedented scale.
