Book excerpt: The Falls: Book One You see them everywhere, Mormon missionaries dressed in their white shirts, ties, and suit pants. With their short-cut hair, they ride on their bicycles and knock on doors, trying to convert the world to their brand of religion. In their church community, they are revered for exemplifying the wholesomeness and goodness of being a Mormon youth. RJ and Chris are no different. Both were born and raised in the Mormon church. Both excelled academically, progressed ecclesiastically, earned their Eagle Scout rank at a young age, and had pretty girlfriends. And now it’s their turn to serve a mission and experience the Mormon rite of passage. Unknown to them, serving a mission not only opens strangers' doors to “preach the Gospel” as they were taught, but awakens secrets of their own lives while in service to their fellow man—secrets their church is not ready to embrace.

Book excerpt: An Emerald City Elegy For Ray Neslowe, being a private detective in Seattle isn’t quite the life of excitement people see on TV. He serves legal papers on witnesses and does background checks for clients, but most of his work comes in the form of spying on cheating spouses for his divorce-attorney employer. He shoots with a camera, not a gun. Then one night on a stakeout, all that changes when Neslowe suddenly finds himself on the run—the only problem is, he doesn’t know who’s after him. Desperate to seek refuge, he accidentally stumbles onto a crime scene and is arrested by the police instead. It will take all his skills as an investigator as well as help from every contact he has in town for the detective to keep himself from being convicted of murder. Like the improvisation of a great jazz musician, there’s no road map this time as Ray Neslowe is forced to work his way through the Seattle changes.

Book excerpt: "Truth Lies Within" tells the story of the people in the ancient city of Baghdad, before, during, and after the war that took place in Iraq in the spring of 2003. It tells the story of the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime and of the chaos which accompanied the arrival of the Americans. But more than anything else, as its title suggests, this book is concerned with telling the truth--and rightly so, because few wars of modern times have ever been so lied about. An emotional diary of 200 photographs, "Truth Lies Within" also includes written contributions from highly esteemed journalists. Jon Lee Anderson, foreign correspondant with "The New Yorker," who was embedded in Baghdad as the bombs fell, offers a preface. Observations come from Monica G. Prieto of "El Mundo." And John Morris, the photo editor of "The New York Times" during the Vietnam War, closes the book with an afterword.

Download or read book Straight Skin Gay Masks and Pretending to be Gay on Screen written by Gilad Padva and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-11 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Straight Skin, Gay Masks and Pretending to Be Gay on Screen examines cinematic depictions of pretending-to-be-gay, assessing performances that not only reflect heteronormative and explicitly homophobic attitudes, but also offer depictions of gay selfhood with more nuanced multidirectional identifications. The case of straight protagonists pretending to be gay on screen is the ideal context in which to study unanticipated progressivity and dissidence in regard to cultural construction of human sexualities in the face of theatricalized epistemological collapse. Teasing apart the dynamics of depictions of both sexual stability and fluidity in cinematic images of men pretending to be gay offers new insights into such salient issues as sexual vulnerability and dynamics and long-term queer visibility in a politically complicated mass culture which is mostly produced in a heteronormative and even hostile cultural environment. Additionally, this book initially examines queer uses of sexuality masquerade in Alternate Gay World Cinema that allegorically features a world pretending to be gay, in which straights are harassed and persecuted, in order to expose the tragic consequences of sexual intolerance. Films and TV series examined as part of the analysis include The Gay Deceivers, Victor/Victoria, Happy Texas, William Friedkin’s Cruising and many other straight and gay screens. This is a fascinating and important study relevant to students and researchers in Film Studies, Media Studies, Gender Studies, Queer Studies, Sexuality Studies, Communication Studies and Cultural Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our lives today are oppressed by the demand that we live, feel and experience with ever greater intensity. We are enticed to try exotic flavors and smells; urged to enjoy a wide range of sexual experiences; pushed to engage in extreme sports and recreational drugs - all in the pursuit of some new, unheard-of intensity.Tristan Garcia argues that such intensity rarely lives up to its promise. It always comes at a price: one that defines the ethical predicament of contemporary life. The notion of intensity was the hidden key to Garcia's landmark book Form and Object. In The Life Intense, the first part of his ambitious Letting Be trilogy, he begins to develop it in detail. This first book focuses on ethics; the forthcoming volumes will be devoted to politics and then metaphysics.
