Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE FIGHTING AMPHIBIANS, The LST of World War II, is a feature film screenplay taken from the novel, A SLOW MOVING TARGET. The script contains many authentic stories about the turmoil and hardships that the Amphibious Fleet endured during beach invasions in World War II. To enhance the military adversities, the story revolves around the personal lives of five young fictitious sailors who, in 1942, enlist in the U.S. Navy to defend their country against the Axis. They come from different parts of America, meet in boot-camp and become life-long buddies. After boot-camp they were transferred to the dreaded and perilous Amphibious Fleet of LSTs (Landing Ship Tank), because the LST is truly a Large Slow Target having the reputation of a brief life and a sitting duck during an invasion. In this screenplay each principle character presents his/her own unique and unusual experiences. The main character is Johnny Maroni, who attempts to keep the group together and preserve their friendship throughout the war. They call themselves The Five Amphibians. The Five Amphibians are later split-up and are transferred to different LSTs which compelled them to fight in separate campaigns in both the Pacific and Atlantic theaters. They communicate through Johnnys sister, Angela, who rewrites their letters to the different Amphibians. Throughout the war only one Amphibian is killed in action.

Book Amphibian Survey and Monitoring Handbook

Download or read book Amphibian Survey and Monitoring Handbook written by John W. Wilkinson and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Evidence bases for conservation are becoming increasingly important to convince landowners and politicians of the need to take action in defence of species and habitats all around the world. A valuable feature of this book is its emphasis on collecting and analysing such essential information." Trevor Beebee, Phyllomedusa Amphibians are among the most globally endangered groups of vertebrates with more than one-third of species being assessed as declining or threatened. Often, amphibian declines can be attributed to a suite of interacting factors, many of which are human in origin, but further information is needed to elaborate the key causes and to discover ways of reversing declines. Robust surveys provide vital ecological and biological data on amphibian populations, and underpin the decisions made to protect species and reverse their declines. Ongoing monitoring informs land managers and decision makers about whether they are taking the right action. This book is designed to help you carry out amphibian surveying and monitoring so that the results of your surveys can be used effectively. Part 1 introduces amphibians: order Anura (frogs and toads); Caudata (newts and salamanders); and order Gymnophonia (caecilians). Part 2 is essential reading before you start surveying. It introduces the different types of survey and monitoring programmes and discusses survey aims and resources. It contains chapters on collecting and handling survey data; survey permissions and licencing; health and safety, and biosecurity; and handling amphibians. Part 3 discusses everything you need to know during your survey, and provides a detailed look at amphibian survey methods. Part 4 covers presenting and using your survey's data to best effect. A useful resources section is also provided, with example survey forms and details of additional information resources that will optimize the impacts of your surveys. Key amphibian survey techniques are discussed with reference to published examples of successful surveys - so you'll be able to choose what's right for your situation. Tips on optimizing your survey effort and handling amphibians in the field are also included. Whether carrying out a student expedition project or seeking information to support the management of a protected area, this book contains essential advice from an amphibian ecologist who has encountered the same sorts of decisions you'll face when planning your surveys.

Book Eye of Newt and Toe of Frog Adder s Fork and Lizard s Leg

Download or read book Eye of Newt and Toe of Frog Adder s Fork and Lizard s Leg written by Marty Crump and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-11-16 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent estimates suggest that nearly 3 million people in the US alone keep an amphibian or reptile as a pet. YouTube videos with odes to cane toads are ubiquitous. And yet amphibians and reptiles also keep extermination companies in business, and are reviled by many. These emotions pose great challenges to the conservation of these species, just as their populations in the natural world are in great decline. It can be quite hard to inspire stewardship of a tomato toad in the same way that one can more generally charismatic fauna like pandas and polar bears. In response, herpetologists have created large-scale programs such as Amphibian Ark, the umbrella organization behind the Year of the Frog campaign, http: //www.amphibianark.org/, to educate and enthrall citizens with the charm of the more slimy species of the planet. Few herpetologists have contributed more to the conservation of amphibians and reptiles than Marty Crump, a renowned expert on declining amphibians. This manuscript is her ode to the toad, a masterful compilation of science and narrative centering on human relations with amphibians and reptiles across the globe. An intrepid explorer and skilled writer, Crump has gathered stories and myths and paired them with natural history to give a wonderful view of how essential amphibians and reptiles are to our well being. Using symbolism, folklore, and science, the manuscript also explores the conservation consequences of our complicated amorous and vexed affair with snakes, frogs, toads and other herpetofauna.

Download or read book Amphibian written by Carla Gunn and published by Coach House Books. This book was released on 2005-04-14 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nine-year-old Phineas William Walsh has an encyclopedic knowledge of the natural world. He knows that rockfish have swim bladders that can burst and push their intestines out their butts, and he knows that barnacles have the longest penises in the animal kingdom. He'¬"s obsessed with animals; it'¬"s practically all he talks about, and he spends all his spare time watching the Green Channel or researching obscure facts on the internet or in books. And he'¬"s worried sick about what humans are doing to the planet and its other animals. But although he seems to know absolutely everything about the animal world, what he doesn'¬"t know is why his granddad had to die or why Lyle the bully always picks on him or why his parents can'¬"t live together. He misses his grandad terribly, and he hates to see his grandmother '¬ ; the only person who understands his eco-worrying '¬ ; so sad. He misses his dad, too, and wishes he could see him more, and that the separation didn'¬"t make his mom so lonely '¬ ; though he sure doesn'¬"t like her talking to creepy Brent. And things only get worse when Phin'¬"s mom, desperately worried about his animal obsession, takes him to see a rather unsympathetic psychologist. When his Grade 4 class gets a pet frog '¬ ; a White'¬"s Tree Frog from Australia '¬ ; it becomes the perfect focus for all Phin'¬"s worrying. He can'¬"t bear to see Cuddles penned up in a cage so very far from his natural habitat just for the amusement of humans. It'¬"s just another example of how cruel and self-centred humans are. And so Phin and his best pal, Bird, are spurred to action.
