Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cover crops slow erosion, improve soil, smother weeds, enhance nutrient and moisture availability, help control many pests and bring a host of other benefits to your farm. At the same time, they can reduce costs, increase profits and even create new sources of income. You¿ll reap dividends on your cover crop investments for years, since their benefits accumulate over the long term. This book will help you find which ones are right for you. Captures farmer and other research results from the past ten years. The authors verified the info. from the 2nd ed., added new results and updated farmer profiles and research data, and added 2 chap. Includes maps and charts, detailed narratives about individual cover crop species, and chap. about aspects of cover cropping.

Book Rotational Benefits Planting Timing and Seeding Rate Evaluation of Field Pea in Semi arid Cropping Systems Across the High Plains of Western Nebraska

Download or read book Rotational Benefits Planting Timing and Seeding Rate Evaluation of Field Pea in Semi arid Cropping Systems Across the High Plains of Western Nebraska written by Samuel T. Koeshall and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Field pea (Pisum sativum L.) is a cool season annual legume that is grown for production of edible seed or forage. Agronomic and rotational challenges exist for semi-arid growing regions in western Nebraska that challenge the profitability of many dryland cropping systems in wester Nebraska. This research is focused on improving agronomic recommendations of seeding rates and timing of crop establishment to improve yield responses for producers while evaluating the effectiveness of replacing chemical summer fallow with field pea to improve soil health, increase water conservation, and increase land productivity with an intensified crop rotation. The effect of planting date and seeding rate were evaluated with three different planting dates. Each planting date included five seeding rates at four locations throughout western Nebraska over two years. Planting date did not influence grain yield response while plant population did influence grain yield. Planting dates displayed different response curves within a site-year. Optimal plant population changed with different site-years and planting dates. Optimal plant population results from specific site-years and across western Nebraska over the two year experiment suggests that maximum partial net return is achieved between 70-109 plants m-2. The rotation study was evaluated by comparing chemical summer fallow and field pea as treatments in a wheat-corn-fallow cropping system at two locations in western Nebraska over two cycles. Soil water content, soil fertility, field pea yield, and subsequent winter wheat yield was recorded throughout the experiment. Incorporation of field pea did not change winter wheat yield compared to chemical summer fallow. Field pea did improve sustainability parameters at both locations at certain sampling dates but did not result in permanent ecological improvements following harvest of winter wheat.

Book The Effect of Pulse Crop Rotation and Controlled released Urea on the Nitrogen Accumulation and End use Quality of Canada Western Red Spring Wheat

Download or read book The Effect of Pulse Crop Rotation and Controlled released Urea on the Nitrogen Accumulation and End use Quality of Canada Western Red Spring Wheat written by David William Andrew Przednowek and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 1070 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of pulse crop rotation and controlled-release urea (CRU) on soil nitrogen (N) status and N accumulation of Canada Western Red Spring (CWRS) wheat. Spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. AC Barrie) was grown at Carman and Brandon, MB, on field pea (Pisum sativum L.) and flax (Linum usitatissimum L) stubble at three rates (0, 30, and 90 kg N ha-1) of N from two fertilizer N sources, ammonium nitrate (AN) and CRU, a polyurethane-coated urea with an N content of 43 per cent. Wheat was grown at Swift Current, SK, on field pea and durum wheat stubble at three rates of N (34, 50, and 78 kg N ha-1) based on soil test recommendations. The effect of previous crop on N uptake pattem was more consistent than the effect of fertilizer N source. Significantly higher soil NO3-N at planting on field pea stubble at two of three Manitoba sites resulted in higher wheat plant and grain N yield. Contrary to a number of similar western Canadian studies, apparent net mineralized N during the growing season and per cent post-anthesis N uptake were higher for what grown on flax stubble (F-W) compared to wheat grown on field pea stubble (P-W) at the two sites; the result was attributed to rapid N mineralization following field pea harvest. Wheat end-use quality was assessed with the Mixograph, dough micro-extension tests, and the Canadian Short Process bake test. At the same flour protein content (FPC), flour from wheat grown on field pea stubble had significantly lower Mixograph work input-to peak and dough strength index, as well as shorter dough development time at FPC
