Book excerpt: On the surface, a quiet township in rural Ontario might seem picturesque, but in the early decades of the twentieth century, that image couldn’t have been farther from the truth. With an obscure cult, unexplained disappearances, and a series of murders, the dark rumours of what really went on in those early days have cast long shadows on this humble setting. Back in the day, the residents of this township—which straddled a stretch of water connecting two larger lakes—relied heavily on the services of the local ferryman to cross this wide channel. But their ferryman had an ominous reputation and a chilling secret. Almost fifty years later, ferryman Luther Neville is haunted by his memory of those long-ago days and menaced by echoes of obstructed justice and a mystery yet to be unravelled. A fictional adaptation inspired by the real-life legend of Ontario’s Rideau Ferry Man, The Ferryman’s House—Book One of the Ferryman’s Tales—is an eerie tale that imagines the truth behind the legend and brings back to life all those lost to history ... and to the Ferryman.

Book excerpt: "Dylan has escaped a horrific train crash unscathed. Except she hasn't. The bleak landscape around her isn't Scotland. It's a wasteland haunted by wraiths searching for human souls. And the stranger waiting for her isn't an ordinary boy. Tristan is a Ferryman, tasked with transporting her soul safely to the afterlife, a journey he's made a thousand times before. Except this time, something's different. Torn between love and destiny, Dylan realises she can't let Tristan go, nor can she stay with him. Eventually, inevitably, the wraiths would capture her soul and she would be lost forever. Can true love overcome the boundaries of death? Ferryman is a thought-provoking and truly original story of a love that refuses to be limited by death."--Provided by publisher.

Book Ferryman of Memories

Download or read book Ferryman of Memories written by Deirdre Boyle and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-17 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ferryman of Memories: The Films of Rithy Panh is an unconventional book about an unconventional filmmaker. Rithy Panh survived the Cambodian genocide and found refuge in France where he discovered in film a language that allowed him to tell what happened to the two million souls who suffered hunger, overwork, disease, and death at the hands of the Khmer Rouge. His innovative cinema is made with people, not about them—even those guilty of crimes against humanity. Whether he is directing Isabelle Huppert in The Sea Wall, following laborers digging trenches, or interrogating the infamous director of S-21 prison, aesthetics and ethics inform all he does. With remarkable access to the director and his work, Deirdre Boyle introduces readers to Panh’s groundbreaking approach to perpetrator cinema and dazzling critique of colonialism, globalization, and the refugee crisis. Ferryman of Memories reveals the art of one of the masters of world cinema today, focusing on nineteen of his award-winning films, including Rice People, The Land of Wandering Souls, S-21: The Khmer Rouge Killing Machine, and The Missing Picture.

Book Jim Bridger

Download or read book Jim Bridger written by J. Cecil Alter and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2013-06-14 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 20, 1822, the Missouri Republican published a notice addressed “to enterprising young men” in the St. Louis area. “The subscriber,” it said “wishes to engage one hundred young men to ascend the Missouri River to its source, there to be employed for one, two, or three years. For particulars enquire of Major Andrew Henry… or of the subscriber near St. Louise.” The “subscriber” was General William H. Ashley, and among the “enterprising young men” who embarked with Major Henry less than a month later was eighteen-year-old James Bridger, former blacksmith’s apprentice. So began the Ashley-Henry fur empire and the long, colorful career of Jim Bridger. In the years that followed, Jim Bridger became a master mountain man, an expert trapper, and a guide without equal. He came to know the Rocky Mountain region and its inhabitants as a farmer knows his fields and flocks. Indeed, J. Cecil Alter tells us, “he was among the first white men to use the Indian trail over South Pass; he was first to taste the waters of the Great Salt lake, first to report a two-ocean stream, foremost in describing the Yellowstone Park phenomena, and the only man to run the Big Horn River rapid on a raft; and he originally selected the Crow Creek-Sherman-Dale Creek route the Laramie Mountains and Bridger’s Pass over the Continental Divide, which were adopted by the Union pacific Railroad.” Such knowledge, together with extraordinary skill and uncanny luck, preserved Jim Bridger in a country where nearly half of his mountain companions met violent death. It also gave rise to a brood of impossible tales about Old Gabe and his adventures-tales which he himself may unwittingly have helped along with his droll humor. Based on Mr. Alter’s original biography of 1925 (a facsimile edition of which, with addenda, appeared in 1950) and a wealth of new facts gleaned from many years of careful research, Jim Bridger is the authentic story of the Old Scout’s life. Only those events in which Bridger took part are included; improbable and uncorroborated stories, however interesting, have been omitted.

Book excerpt: Several moons hang low over the islands of Aguaterre within the Great Volcanic Ring, where earthquakes, volcanoes and roiling sea make for a rough existence. But the world is changing, the political landscape is shifting, many dangers approach but people have secret hopes for something better. Garrison, beaten and berated, knows there’s more to life than the chores of the farm and forge, and abuse from his blacksmithing father. Ellinvale, trapped in a walled estate within a walled city, chafes at the time-honoured tradition of matchmaking that limits her future as a woman. The Dragon King, protected in his high tower, studies the impassable Churn, a long swath of frothy ocean that likes to smash his ships to pieces against the jagged rocks of the Maw. He needs to send battalions of Amphibians across the Churn if he is to achieve his ambition—to reign over the world. When Garrison sets out alone on a special trip beyond Crossroads to deliver his father’s wares, it puts them all on a path of convergence that could change the course of their futures. The Ritual is the first book in the Chronicles of Garrison series. At its core, it’s a story of good versus evil, the strength of friendship and the discovery that there is power within.
