It was not published in book form until 1979. The story is told from the perspective of Vandyk "Van" Jennings, a student of sociology who, along with two friends (Terry O. Nicholson and Jeff Margrave), forms an expedition party to explore an area of uncharted land where it is rumored lives a society consisting entirely of women. The three friends do not entirely believe the rumors because they are unable to think of a way how human reproduction could occur without males. The men speculate about what a society of women would be like, each guessing differently based on the stereotype of women which he holds most dear: Jeff regarding women as things to be served and protected; Terry viewing them as things to be conquered and won.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman is ranked among the most influential voices of the feminist reform movement of the Fin de Siècle, and is best known for her utopian novel "Herland" (1915). She herein thematizes the issue of gender inequality through an isolated and thriving all-female society and pictures the possibilities that would arise for women without the limitations of patriarchy.

Ourland resumes the adventures of Herland's protagonists, Ellador and Van, but turns from utopian fantasy to a challenging analysis of contemporary social fissures in "his land," or the real world. The republication of Herland as a separate novel in 1979 revived critical interest in Gilman's work but truncated the larger aims implicit in the Herland/Ourland saga, leaving an erroneous understanding of Gilman's other/better half of the story, in which it is suggested that strong women can resocialize men to be nurturant and cooperative. Gilman's choice of a sexually integrated society in With Her in Ourland provides us with her answer to her ideal society, but her foray into a woman-only society as a corrective to a male dominated one is a controversial option. The challenging message of Ourland, however, does not impede the pleasure of reading it as a novel.

According to her, women were seen only as a sexed group that was subordinated by men. Not only did she search for the roots of this subordination, but also focused on education with the goal of creating a humane and nurturing environment. Basically, she wanted to achieve changes regarding marriage, home, the education of children, and women’s work.
