Book excerpt: The Feet of Fines preserved in the Public Record Office are indispensable records for local, family and social historians. To the genealogist, Fines are especially helpful in giving the names of many estate owners' wives and families. The detailed introduction to the Records includes discussion of how the major landholding families such as de Vere, Rich, Radcliffe, Petre, Darcy and Mildmay were involved in property transactions including mortages owing to heavy debts, and how the merchants Thomas Sutton and Horatio Palavicino, as well as Elisabeth I's favourite the Earl of Leicester, were associated with Essex. The volume contains nearly 3,000 separate property transactions and 7,000 references to persons, with data on estates, large and small, in every Essex Parish and many in Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire. There are numerous items concerning commons, openfields, dovecotes, minor place-names, fisheries, sheepwalks, mills, parks and warrens, and an extensive subject index.

Book The Heads of Religious Houses

Download or read book The Heads of Religious Houses written by David Knowles and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-08-09 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first of two volumes, now covering the heads of religious houses in England and Wales from the tenth-century reform to the death of Edward III, 940–1377. This first volume, by the great master of monastic history, Dom David Knowles, aided by Christopher Brooke and Vera London, was published first in 1972 and was quickly recognised as a major work of reference, noted for its mastery of accurate detail. It has now been brought up to date with substantial addenda and corrigenda by Christopher Brooke. The 1972 volume covers the period 940–1216, and comprises fully documented, critical lists of monastic superiors, with succinct biographical details. It is an essential foundation for all prosopographical study of the religious history of the period; and the precise chronology that it underpins is invaluable for dating innumerable undated documents. As such, the book is a fundamental tool of medieval research.

Book Edward I s Regent

Download or read book Edward I s Regent written by Michael Ray and published by Pen and Sword History. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born at Christmas 1249 to Richard, Edmund of Cornwall was nephew to Henry III and cousin to Edward I. His eventful childhood took him to Germany when his father was elected king there. He was captured at the battle of Lewes and imprisoned for more than a year. Returning from crusade, he witnessed the brutal murder of his half-brother, which left him as heir to his father, the richest man in the kingdom. Throughout his life, Edmund played a crucial role in medieval England. As Regent of England, Earl of Cornwall and the richest man in the land, he was a leading force of the late-thirteenth century. This book considers Edmund’s life, his use of his wealth to lend to the king and others and to be a major benefactor of religious houses. His piety saw him found two new religious houses, rebuild another and bring the Holy Blood relic from Germany to Hailes abbey. His record as Regent of England for three years is assessed. The wide spread of his lands, which included 13castles and more than 800 places in 27 counties, and his tenants are set out as is his place in the local community. The basis of his wealth and its sources, including money from his lands but also from tin mining and marine dues in Cornwall, is explored and his knightly affinity and his close associates and officials are considered. On a personal level, the book examines his unsuccessful, childless marriage with the sister of the Earl of Gloucester. Edmund was a key figure throughout Edward I's rein and the late-thirteenth century. In this insightful account, the man behind England's 'greatest king' is at long last brought to the fore.
