Book The Feasibility of Using Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for Wildlife Research

Download or read book The Feasibility of Using Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for Wildlife Research written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The findings of this project contribute significantly to the field of wildlife management and other scientific disciplines that utilize low-level aerial photography. Collection of aerial data has consistently been hampered by problems with safety, monetary cost, statistical reliability, and logistics. Small (0.2-3 m wingspan), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are rapidly developing and becoming available to consumers. UAVs have the potential to replace and enhance data previously collected by small manned airplanes. This project tested the usefulness, in the context of wildlife research in Florida, of a 1.5-m-wingspan UAV equipped with an autopilot system and a high quality digital video camera. Although the UAV system was not adequate for collecting statistically reliable data necessary for wildlife research, it revealed valuable information to be applied to future wildlife UAVs, and the imagery collected indicated strong promise for a variety of wildlife research applications.

Book The Use of Small Unmanned Aircraft by the Washington State Department of Transportation

Download or read book The Use of Small Unmanned Aircraft by the Washington State Department of Transportation written by Edward Donald McCormack and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly affordable, easy to transport and launch, and can be equipped with cameras that provide information usable for transportation agencies. The Washington State Department of Transportation conducted a series of UAV tests to evaluate their capabilities while also exploring institutional issues. These tests, while exploring the general capabilities of UAVs, focused on evaluating the use of a UAV as an avalanche control tool on mountain slopes above state highways. WSDOT's maintenance division has an active snow avalanche control program that is designed to reduce highway closure time and hazards to motorists, and the use of UAVs was seen as having some potential operational advantages. The UAVs also captured aerial images suitable for traffic surveillance and data collection. The evaluation found that the main limitation to UAV use is institutional, particularly the need to obtain approval to fly from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This approval process will make UAV use a challenge, but these issues may change as the FAA considers new rules.

Book Forestry Applications of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles UAVs 2019

Download or read book Forestry Applications of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles UAVs 2019 written by Alessandro Matese and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are new platforms that have been increasingly used in the last few years for forestry applications that benefit from the added value of flexibility, low cost, reliability, autonomy, and capability of timely provision of high-resolution data. The main adopted image-based technologies are RGB, multispectral, and thermal infrared. LiDAR sensors are becoming commonly used to improve the estimation of relevant plant traits. In comparison with other permanent ecosystems, forests are particularly affected by climatic changes due to the longevity of the trees, and the primary objective is the conservation and protection of forests. Nevertheless, forestry and agriculture involve the cultivation of renewable raw materials, with the difference that forestry is less tied to economic aspects and this is reflected by the delay in using new monitoring technologies. The main forestry applications are aimed toward inventory of resources, map diseases, species classification, fire monitoring, and spatial gap estimation. This Special Issue focuses on new technologies (UAV and sensors) and innovative data elaboration methodologies (object recognition and machine vision) for applications in forestry.

Book Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles as Remote Sensors

Download or read book Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles as Remote Sensors written by Tim O'Brien and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research compares an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-facilitated wetland data collection technique to conventional methods using measures of convenience, cost-effectiveness, and precision. The increasing risk surrounding Ontario's wetlands is due in part to the inefficiencies of current data collection techniques. A small UAV was deployed to survey and collect imagery data from a wetland complex in Wellington County, Ontario. Orthomosaic imagery, and digital model samples were generated using spatial analysis software. Collected imagery displayed finer data resolution than conventional aerial imagery, and can be considered more comprehensive and precise in collecting delineation data, including ground water, vegetation patterns, and habitat. The single user approach demonstrated time and accessibility convenience over labour-intensive field studies, and at a competitive cost. For landscape architects and related professionals, this remote sensing approach advances landscape comprehension and provides a precise, accessible, and affordable wetland data collection method.
