Book excerpt: As it turns out, a London Season is the worst place to find love. Eliza Mulgrave never expected to make her bows to society. Yet here she is, dancing at Almacks and riding through Hyde Park. It would be perfectly delightful if it weren't for the whispers and scornful glances. She certainly never sought to quit her place in society as a tradesman's daughter. At least then she had known who she was and how to act; now, she's completely lost. Adam Lambert has been raised to be a viscount and though the time has come sooner than expected he is confident stepping into this new life. Until he meets his Father's best kept secret-a little girl. And now she's Adam's responsibility. Surely someone ought to have told him about her before now. After stumbling through an initial meeting, Adam and Eliza both find in the other what they most need this Season-a sincere friend. But society is not often willing to grant two people room to learn for themselves who to be, or who to love. As the first stand-alone novel in a new series by author Laura Rollins, The Audacious Miss Eliza begins the Daughters of Courage series. This charming story is a light-hearted, clean and wholesome romance set in the Regency era.

Book We Have Raised All of You

Download or read book We Have Raised All of You written by Katy Simpson Smith and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2013-11-04 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: White, black, and Native American women in the early South often viewed motherhood as a composite of roles, ranging from teacher and nurse to farmer and politician. Within a multicultural landscape, mothers drew advice and consolation from female networks, broader intellectual currents, and an understanding of their own multifaceted identities to devise their own standards for child rearing. In this way, by constructing, interpreting, and defending their roles as parents, women in the South maintained a certain degree of control over their own and their children's lives. Focusing on Virginia and the Carolinas from 1750 to 1835, Katy Simpson Smith's study examines these maternal practices to reveal the ways in which diverse groups of women struggled to create empowered identities in the early South. We Have Raised All of You contributes to a wide variety of historical conversations by affirming the necessity of multicultural -- not simply biracial -- studies of the American South. Its equally weighted analysis of white, black, and Native American women sets it distinctly apart from other work. Smith shows that while women from different backgrounds shared similar experiences within the trajectory of motherhood, no universal model holds up under scrutiny. Most importantly, this book suggests that parenthood provided women with some power within their often-circumscribed lives. Alternately restricted, oppressed, belittled, and enslaved, women sought to embrace an identity that would give them some sense of self-respect and self-worth. The rich and varied roles that mothers inherited, Smith shows, afforded women this empowering identity.

The family hired a vocal coach who, even though he was a qualified and a professional coach, lusted after beautiful girls who were coached by him. This was not publicly known, and unaware of this, Dinahs family trusted him with Dinah. When the ordeal of sexual harassment began with Dinah, she was afraid to let her parents know. Her only confidant was a diary her mother gave her when she started her coaching lessons. At her final debut, when she had turned eighteen years old, her coach disguised himself as a woman and raped her in the ladies room of the concert hall. Dinah suffered from two traumatic experiencesbeing raped by her coach and unable to tell her family. Because of the trauma, she was sent to a home to recover, where she attempted suicide. After much care and counseling and with the help of a friend, she overcame the trauma and revealed her long-kept secret. This brought her justice as her vocal coach was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment. After losing his mind, he committed suicide. Ten years later, Dinah was back on stage, singing even better than she had ever been and fulfilled the dream her mother wanted to see come true.
