Book Fatigue of Metals

Download or read book Fatigue of Metals written by P. G. Forrest and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue of Metals provides a general account of the failure of metals due to fatigue, a subject of great practical importance in the field of engineering and metallurgy. The book covers a wide range of topics on the study of the fatigue of metals. The text presents in the first three chapters the characteristics and detection of fatigue fractures; methods of fatigue testing; and the fatigue strengths of different materials. The resistance of materials to fatigue under complex stress; the determination and effects of stress concentration; influence of surface treatment on fatigue strength; and effects of corrosion and temperature are also studied in detail. In relation to the previous chapters of fatigue information, a chapter is devoted to engineering design to prevent fatigue. The last two chapters provide a brief historical survey of the developments of the study of the mechanism of fatigue and fatigue of non-metallic materials such as wood, plastic, rubber, glass, and concrete. Mechanical engineers, designers, metallurgists, researchers, and students will find the book as a good reference material.

Book Diagonal Tension in Curved Webs

Download or read book Diagonal Tension in Curved Webs written by Paul Kuhn and published by . This book was released on 1947 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The engineering theory of incomplete diagonal tension in plane webs presented in NACA TN No. 1364 is generalizd in order to make it applicable to curved webs. Comparisons are given between calculated and experimental results for a number of stiffened cylinders subjected to torsional loads. The results indicate that the theory predicts the stresses to about the same accuracy for curved webs as for plane webs. The failing stresses in the stringers in curved webs were predicted conservatively in all cases.

Book Bibliography on the Fatigue of Materials Components and Structures

Download or read book Bibliography on the Fatigue of Materials Components and Structures written by J. Y. Mann and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-02-26 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bibliography on the Fatigue of Materials, Components and Structures: 1838-1950 is a bibliographic guide to references on the fatigue of materials, components, and structures. The materials listed in this bibliography were published between 1838 and 1950 and include abstracting journals and references that have appeared in papers and books. The references in this bibliography are listed chronologically according to their year of publication and alphabetically in each year according to the name of the first author. Papers without specific authors are listed at the conclusion of the alphabetical section of each year. In order to provide easy access to particular subject matter, the bibliography includes a comprehensive Subject Index and an Author Index. Abbreviations are extensively used for the titles of journals and other publications. Topics covered include changes in the internal structure of iron; causes of axle failures in locomotives, tenders, and wagons and how to avoid them; the behavior of metals under repeated stress; the resistance of steel to vibration; heat treatment and fatigue of steel; and the effect of strain on railway axles. This volume will be a useful resource for students, engineers, metallurgists, and research workers.

Book Fatigue Analysis of a Paper Airplane

Download or read book Fatigue Analysis of a Paper Airplane written by Michael R. Urban Ph.D. and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-10-02 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accounting for fatigue loadings has been a concern ever since the widespread introduction of metallic materials into load-bearing components in the nineteenth century. Calculations were developed based on the analysis capabilities of their time incorporating all the latest technologies of their era. At the time, that technology was pencil-and-paper calculations. Today's calculations are computer-based. The widespread use of computing methods has greatly enhanced the analyst abilities for simulating internal stress and strain fields. Unfortunately, current fatigue analyses often force-fit current stress field calculations into fatigue analysis methods meant for nineteenth century stress calculation methods. It's never a good idea to force methods optimized for pre-computer calculations to work with computers. This text presents a more integrated approach to computer-based fatigue analysis methods. Like what was originally done, the latest technologies are applied rather than force-fitting computer computational capabilities into nineteenth-century techniques. Holistic approaches incorporating all knowledge have long been established as the most successful approach to problem-solving. Incorporating all knowledge with the most modern capabilities is the preferred approach. Holistic methods strive to reduce subjective inputs and replace them with consistent objective ones. This text aims to transition disjointed inefficient analyses into a unified computer-based holistic technique by introducing a fatigue analysis method specifically developed for computer simulations. Ultimately, for any method or theory to be valuable, it must be put into practice and prove itself. That entails leadership decision-making. Engineering design development activities will lead to final decisions. Information in a holistic approach must include the reliability of the information. How consistent are the predictions? Are the two types of potential scatter, analytic, and physical properly addressed? Is analytic scatter minimized while maintaining creativity? Is physical scatter totally understood? Effective program management requires knowledge on both types of scatter and, most importantly, the ability to realize the difference. A novel computer-based unified approach to fatigue methods is presented which incorporates a holistic approach for more accurate and consistent analyses, including the management and leadership of fatigue analysis projects, minimization of analytic scatter, management of physical scatter, and unification of methods that minimize subjective inputs often needed to bridge inconsistent techniques.

Book Fatigue Testing and Analysis of Results

Download or read book Fatigue Testing and Analysis of Results written by W. Weibull and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue Testing and Analysis of Results discusses fundamental concepts of fatigue testing and results analysis. The book begins with a description of the symbols and nomenclature selected for the present book, mainly those proposed by the ASTM Committee E-9 on Fatigue. Fatigue testing methods are then discussed including routine tests, short-life and long-life tests, cumulative-damage tests, and abbreviated and accelerated tests. Separate chapters cover fatigue testing machines and equipment; instruments and measuring devices; and test pieces used in fatigue testing. The factors affecting test results are considered, including material, types of stressing, test machine, environment, and testing technique. The final two chapters cover the planning of test programs and the presentation of results. Test program planning involves the statistical design of a test series; specification and sampling of test pieces; and choice of test pieces, testing machines, and test conditions. The chief purpose of most fatigue tests is the experimental determination of the relation between the endurance and the magnitude of the applied stress range for the material and the specimen under consideration, and final results can be condensed into a table, graph, or analytical expression.
