Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary legend Jim Harrison's collection of novellas, The Farmer's Daughter, finds him writing at the height of his powers, and in fresh and audacious new directions. The three stories in The Farmer's Daughter are as different as they are unforgettable. Written in the voice of a home-schooled fifteen-year-old girl in rural Montana, the title novella is an uncompromising, beautiful tale of an extraordinary character whose youth intersects with unexpected brutality, and the reserves she must draw on to make herself whole. In another, Harrison's beloved recurring character Brown Dog, still looking for love, escapes from Canada back to the United States on the tour bus of a Native rock band called Thunderskins. And finally, a retired werewolf, misdiagnosed with a rare blood disorder brought on by the bite of a Mexican hummingbird, attempts to lead a normal life but is nevertheless plagued by hazy, feverish episodes of epic lust, physical appetite, athletic exertions, and outbursts of violence under the full moon. The Farmer's Daughter is a memorable portrait of three decidedly unconventional American lives. With wit, poignancy, and an unbounded love for his characters, Jim Harrison has again reminded us why he is one of the most cherished and important authors at work today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the merciless deserts of Barrenwest, a realm where the wild west meets the whimsy of high fantasy, we follow Tommy White, a reluctant drifter thrown into a world he had only dared to explore in books. For years, Tommy was confined to the northern town of Fruming, oblivious to the thrills and terrors beyond his sheltered life. But when circumstances propel him into the heart of Barrenwest, Tommy is thrust into a maelstrom of fate that could determine the destiny of the entire continent. In his journey, Tommy stumbles upon a diamond, an artifact of untold power that mysteriously resonates with him. Unbeknownst to Tommy, this gem is far more than a shiny trinket; it's the key to the looming war and harbinger of potential calamity. As he ventures deeper into the unforgiving desert, he uncovers the inexplicable allure of the diamond and its true nature. In his extraordinary journey, Tommy confronts cowboys armed with magical bullets, battles ghastly vampires, abnormal critters, and an array of mystical creatures unique to Barrenwest. Some of these beings are formidable foes, while others prove to be unexpected allies, aiding him in surviving the ruthless desert and facing his deepest fears. "Battle For Barrenwest – The Black Sun" offers a unique blend of classic Western and Fantasy genres. Its narrative delves into epic battles, explores profound perspectives on the dichotomy of good and evil, and blurs the lines between heroism and villainy. Behind the human conflicts and amidst the tangible terrors, a deeper, more sinister evil lurks in the shadows, threatening to pounce from the unknown.

Book excerpt: What if, on September 11, 1814, the United States had lost the close-run battle that Winston Churchill called the "most decisive" of the War of 1812? With a victory at Plattsburgh, would the British have eventually been able to regain control of their former colonies? Only one fleeting moment on Lake Champlain might have been needed to forever alter the young country's history and return it to the grip of King George III. Redcoats' Revenge brings the most successful field commander in history, the Duke of Wellington, to North America in 1814. A coalition of eight European countries has recently defeated Napoleon. With the emperor's threat to England eradicated, Wellington releases the most powerful military juggernaut for service in the Western Hemisphere. His audacious plan sends him and his avenging veteran redcoats plunging straight south from Lake Champlain toward New York City. In Washington, the streets crackle with tension at the news of British ships on the Chesapeake. The White House is promptly evacuated and the capital left undefended when a diversionary force approaches the city and chokes off Baltimore. President James Madison must now decide which of his generals is capable of successfully facing off with the Iron Duke. No friend of the tyrannical Maj. Gen. Andrew Jackson, Madison finally agrees that he may be the only commander with any hope of matching Wellington. Redcoats' Revenge is a vivid montage of the personalities and battles--real and quite possible--of the War of 1812. With its clever and compelling premise, this exciting alternate history will enthrall readers and reveal just how close the United States was to becoming a British colony once again.

Book THE BLACK SHEEP

Download or read book THE BLACK SHEEP written by Mat Gardener and published by Mat Gardener. This book was released on 2014-04-27 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many years ago there was a very good natured sheep who had a very bad start in life. This is her story as to how she turned her life around; simply by being pleasant and respectful to all those who she encountered during her long journey through life. Annie’s life got off to a bad start when her mother died whilst giving birth to her. Annie was also very unfortunate in that when she joined the flock, the leader at that time was a very nasty ewe called Queenie who bullied her mercilessly. Besides having to cope with Queenie’s bullying ways, Annie also had to cope with the farmers’ sheepdog called Sabre as well. He was very similar to Queenie in being another very nasty character. It was as a result to Sabres’ bad attitude that Annie eventually got her big breaks in life, and so ultimately she had a lot to thank him for. This particular story aims to show that where we get off to a bad start in life, either because we are bullied, abused or we handicapped in some way during our early years, things can still come good for us in the end. The things Annie achieved looked impossible during her early days and yet by keeping calm in the face of adversity and in having faith that things will get better she was able to turn her life around.
