Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions by Carl Abbott, Jacob Babb, Marleen S. Barr, Michael Fuchs, John Glover, Stephen Joyce, Sarah Lahm, James McAdams, Cynthia J. Miller, Fernando Gabriel Pagnoni Berns, Chris Pak, María Isabel Pérez Ramos, Stefan Rabitsch, J. Jesse Ramírez, A. Bowdoin Van Riper, Andrew Wasserman, Jeffrey Andrew Weinstock, and Robert Yeates Metropolis, Gotham City, Mega-City One, Panem’s Capitol, the Sprawl, Caprica City—American (and Americanized) urban environments have always been a part of the fantastic imagination. Fantastic Cities: American Urban Spaces in Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror focuses on the American city as a fantastic geography constrained neither by media nor rigid genre boundaries. Fantastic Cities builds on a mix of theoretical and methodological tools that are drawn from criticism of the fantastic, media studies, cultural studies, American studies, and urban studies. Contributors explore cultural media across many platforms such as Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy, the Arkham Asylum video games, the 1935 movie serial The Phantom Empire, Kim Stanley Robinson’s fiction, Colson Whitehead’s novel Zone One, the vampire films Only Lovers Left Alive and A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, Paolo Bacigalupi’s novel The Water Knife, some of Kenny Scharf’s videos, and Samuel Delany’s classic Dhalgren. Together, the contributions in Fantastic Cities demonstrate that the fantastic is able to “real-ize” that which is normally confined to the abstract, metaphorical, and/or subjective. Consequently, both utopian aspirations for and dystopian anxieties about the American city become literalized in the fantastic city.

Book I Will Finish and I Won t Be Last

Download or read book I Will Finish and I Won t Be Last written by Sally Ann Whitney and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-01-29 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the age of nine, Sally Whitney's marathon journey began. At an Arizona ranch, Sally Whitney was suddenly thrown headfirst from a runaway horse. Landing on her head, she suffered a traumatic brain injury resulting in partial paralysis on the left side of her body and a three-week coma. She struggled, unsuccessfully, to reenter the social life of a ten-year-old. Still in social isolation many years down the road, she rehabilitated the best she could on her own. One of her efforts to continue her lifelong road of rehab, and due to the fitness craze in 1982, she found herself in the presence of a nearby gym. As Sally limped into the gym, the manager offered her entry blank for the Phoenix 10K Race being held the very next day. Sally took the entry blank as a courtesy. The pamphlet's heading caught her attention, thus presenting her with another challenge. It read, "RUN, JOG, WALK, OR CRAWL: THE PHOENIX 10K." She thought, What the heck, I can crawl. Doors she opened before this conquest""getting a job, for instance""and other triumphs taken for granted by many became huge barriers for the brain-injured. Sally, though, couldn't or wouldn't back down from life's challenges. Besides being a thriving member of her Senior Citizen Independent Living Apartment Complex, she continues after thirty-six years to actively participate in 5K walks to the cheers of many in the Phoenix area. In 2013, she was admitted to the Arizona Runners Hall of Fame. Sally has written a book explaining how she used her courage to enter adulthood. It is also her desire to give if only a glimmer of hope to those who need to hear that when the going got tough, the tough got tougher and took life one small stride at a time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic form of the American sports stadium has not changed much in the last century. But in an unexpected and controversial act of daring, the Arizona Cardinals football team selected awarding-winning architect and intellectual provocateur Peter Eisenman to design their stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Opened in the summer of 2006, Eisenman's latest work rejects all traditional and staid notions of the sports stadium. Inspired by and sectioned like a barrel cactus, its shell is composed of huge, steel paraboloid sections. The domed stadium boasts a steel-and-fabric retractable roof that allows lightto penetrate when closed while maintaining an airy feel inside. The most ground-breaking feature of the design is its grass roll-out field, which remains outside the stadium until game time, when it is rolled in on steel wheel sets powered by small electric motors. Eisenman Architects, the eighth volume in the Source Books in Architecture series, provides a comprehensive look at a contemporary masterpiece and a landmark of excellence in civic and sports architecture.
