Book Just One More Song

Download or read book Just One More Song written by Herbert Appleman and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-03-13 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just One More Song is Herb Appleman’s account of coping with loss and grief following the death of his wife, Dee. It’s also the celebration of a marriage that was a love affair for forty-six years. The book takes the form of a diary that Herb kept during his first fifteen months of widowhood; and the entries are, for the most part, his conversations with Dee. These weren’t mystical experiences but as Herb says, “as real as memory, imagination, and love are real.” They came about because he couldn’t sleep. Even sleeping pills didn’t help. Nothing did, until one night, when he remembered a scene from the movie Sleepless in Seattle. It was a scene in which Tom Hanks played a character who’d been recently widowed and was having trouble sleeping. Out of the blue, he imagined his dead wife sitting on the other end of the sofa, talking to him, and he felt comforted. Herb thought he’d give it a try and imagined talking to Dee. It worked. From then on, knowing he could talk to her at the end of the day gave him something to look forward to, and after they talked, he found it easier to sleep. Their conversations were triggered by things that happened on a particular day but ranged, as conversations often do, over the whole of their lives. The tone of the book is set in the dedication, which begins, “Nearly every night before going to sleep, Dee liked me to sing to her. The song she’d pick would depend on her mood or the occasion, if the day was special, or simply on the time of year. On the first day of fall, when the colors began to change, she’d always pick ‘Autumn Leaves.’ More often than not, after I finished, she’d say, ‘Just one more song. This time you pick it.’” The dedication ends with “For Dee, in loving memory, just one more song.” Just One More Song is enhanced by personal photos and reproductions of Dee’s artwork; it’s a book to treasure and tell your friends about, especially if they’re in mourning or if they still believe that romantic love can last a lifetime—and longer.

Book The Distant Glow

Download or read book The Distant Glow written by Terry I. Sarigumba and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-02-14 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an autobiography, The Distant Glow traces the story of my life to the rough and rigorous way of life in Corella, Bohol my birthplace. Descending from generations of very poor and illiterate ancestors, I exceeded my parents grade three education by finishing grade six and graduating as elementary school valedictorian. Because my parents could not afford to send me to high school in the city, I stayed out of school for six years, helping my father on the farm and my mother in household chores. One of several backbreaking works I used to do was climbing several coconut trees, about 50 feet in height, to tap the trees (sanggutan) for tuba, a coconut juice that yields mildly alcoholic drink. I used to climb 20 coconut trees every morning, noon and evening, mount over top, sit on one of the palms and tap the juice. One evening after sunset, while atop the sanggutan, I saw a glow, a distant glow. I muttered to myself: Someday, Ill find out what causes that glow. I equated that statement to my goals in life. I did find out what caused the distant glow. Other distant glows appeared and I reached most of them with hard work and having a dream. When the owners of a private school offered me an opportunity to go to their school free of tuition, provided that I maintained the first place standing in the class honor roll, I went to high school, starting at age 20. To help shoulder the other costs of going to high school in the city, I paid my room and board with service: scrubbing and polishing the floor, fetching water from an artesian well and gathering firewood every weekend for the landlord family. With all the hardship, I maintained the tuition-free deal and graduated from high school as class valedictorian.

Book The Complete Lyrics of Johnny Mercer

Book excerpt: The seventh volume in Knopf’s critically acclaimed Complete Lyrics series, published in Johnny Mercer’s centennial year, contains the texts to more than 1,200 of his lyrics, several hundred of them published here for the first time. Johnny Mercer’s early songs became staples of the big band era and were regularly featured in the musicals of early Hollywood. With his collaborators, who included Richard A. Whiting, Harry Warren, Hoagy Carmichael, Jerome Kern, and Harold Arlen, he wrote the lyrics to some of the most famous standards, among them, “Too Marvelous for Words,” “Jeepers Creepers,” “Skylark,” “I’m Old-Fashioned,” and “That Old Black Magic.” During a career of more than four decades, Mercer was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Song an astonishing eighteen times, and won four: for his lyrics to “On the Atchison, Topeka, and the Santa Fe” (music by Warren), “In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening” (music by Carmichael), and “Moon River” and “Days of Wine and Roses” (music for both by Henry Mancini). You’ve probably fallen in love with more than a few of Mercer’s songs–his words have never gone out of fashion–and with this superb collection, it’s easy to see that his lyrics elevated popular song into art.

Book excerpt: Portrait of Life, is the novel with which Alfonso Tirado reincorporates his artistic talent to the world of narrative. For those who have enjoyed his works before, it will come as no surprise to see the spirit of a man who has traveled the world, coming from this author. His narrative, agile and ingenious, with a very precise language, allows you to go through its pages with the certainty of being on the right path and enjoy reading each chapter. Portrait of Life, is a novel that blends the eternal insurmountable love, treated as the phenomenon in itself with what occurs between different members of an elite, which amalgamates that of the artistic and social worlds of New York City. In the story they live the sublime moments of unexpected love between a painter and his model. The memories, the sufferings and the successes of a Russian ballet dancer in New York and the episodes of violence and corruption of the Mafia, in a relationship that brings the protagonists to unpredictable levels. The author takes us through the story, with occasionally erudite descriptions, which are intertwined in a temporality, which is sometimes chaotic, to finally culminate in the drama that is captured in a portrait of the ballerina, which keeps evidence, not only of her artistic personality, but also of the love story between two beings of exquisite sensitivity.
