Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a diagnosis of breast cancer left Lorraine Wise with an uncertain future, she and her husband Mike decided to make the most of the challenge life had thrown them. After consulting a financial guru they decided that taking early retirement to join the ranks of the grey nomads would be a stretch, but not impossible. So they did what they never thought they would and gave up their home base, their roots and their security. Lorraine wanted to make the most of whatever time she had left. Their bucket list wasnt long, but they decided to get on with it while they could. They became intrepid travellers, exploring many parts of our beautiful country. They walked through the most spectacular gorges, snorkelled the magnificent Ningaloo Reef, traversed Australias infamous wilderness tracks, fossicked for gems, became avid bird watchers and went fishing. They took a magnificent boat ride through the Buccaneer Archipelago and experienced the amazing Horizontal Waterfall. While they did follow the tar sometimes, Lorraine and Mike often went bush to find breathtaking views, peace, relaxation and glorious sunrises and sunsets that lit up the sky. After eight wonderful years of living and loving life it is time to share their travels.

Book excerpt: Peter Markham is a schoolteacher who has been abandoned by his female partner because she, rightly, considers him dull. He tries to change himself, seeking adventure by joining a course at a gliding club. Disappointed, he leaves the airfield in anger when a wild teenage girl forces him to stop, begging for help in retrieving her older stepsister, Julia, who has landed her glider in a hayfield a hundred kilometres away. He allows himself to be manipulated by Mitch, the younger girl, calling her a cunning little minx. Reluctantly, he does as she asks. This is the beginning of a series of life-changing experiences for him. Instructed by the older sister, he learns to fly, finds himself in love with the sport and with young Mitch, while confronting serious problems with Julia. Tragedy intervenes, but happier prospects emerge.

Book Tourism and Indigenous Peoples

Download or read book Tourism and Indigenous Peoples written by Richard Butler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-11-02 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tourism and Indigenous Peoples is a unique text examining the role of indigenous societies in tourism and how they interact within the tourism nexus. Unlike other publications, this text focuses on the active role that indigenous peoples take in the industry, and uses international case studies and experiences to provide a global context to illustrate best practice and aid comparison. First published over ten years ago the editors, Butler and Hinch, have thoroughly revised and updated the text to bring together a new collection of contributions and case studies from recognised international authors and those with first hand experiences in this area. Divided into five main sections, the text looks at this topic under the following headings: * Involvement: Uses case studies to discuss and compare such as ‘campfire’ programmes in east Africa, and the employment of indigenous peoples as guides, amongst other cases, * Turbulence: Host guest relationships, conflicts on communities and contrasting strategies and results of tourism in indigenous villages in South Africa * Issues: Discusses issues such as authenticity, religious beliefs and managing indigenous tourism in a fragile environment * Progress: Looks at tourism education, tourism and cultural survival and examples of the policy and practice of indigenous tourism. * Conclusions: Five contributions from indigenous people on North America, Australasia and Europe to discuss implications and experiences. Each section uses international case studies from, for example, Australia, New Zealand, Nepal, Namibia, Thailand, Saudi Arabia and South America.

Book Engaged Leadership

Download or read book Engaged Leadership written by Joan Marques and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-02 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This professional book examines the concept of engaged leadership. Specifically, it focuses on the need for leaders in personal and professional realms, for-profit and non-profit, to understand the importance of engagement in order to achieve enhanced satisfaction and motivation among stakeholders (including employees, shareholders, investors, supporters, customers, suppliers, the community, competitors, family, and partners), and hence, an augmented level of designed thinking, which leads to increased innovation and on-going leadership development. Divided into three sections—engaged leadership development at the personal level, implementation at the organizational level, and manifestation in practice—this book provides professionals, practitioners and policy makers as well as students with the tools and skills to lead actively and conscientiously and help them understand the importance of creativity and compassion for development. Engaged leadership operates on the fundamental principle that leaders have to first and foremost perceive themselves as leaders, and then engage in design thinking, as they will need to develop strategies to reach, encourage, and positively appeal to these stakeholder groups. Leadership is neither limited to those holding formal managerial position, nor to any particular setting. Leaders can be found everywhere, in all layers of society. Leadership is only possible, however, if one dares to perceive and define oneself as a leader. And only when leadership is adopted as a reality within one’s personal perception, can engaged leadership be applied. Featuring contributions from academics, scholars, and professionals from around the world, each providing cases, interactive questions and reflective notes, this book will be of interest to professionals, practitioners, policy makers, students and scholars interested in creative leadership, management, organizational behavior, and governance.
