Book excerpt: After living in Southern CA for 11 years I went back home to where I’m from to start my life over again, after going through a traumatic experience. It’s not been easy having only God & prayer for support but I’ve been amazed at the things have just come my way out of nowhere. After getting back to the Midwest I started hanging with some people who were some of my best friends growing up. We were having bonfires, most of the time, in the woods at the Wabash River frequently. The experience of coming back home has, for the most part, been healing. I immediately started taking photos of the fires & it quickly became my new passion. I would even arrange the wood & logs to see what would happen with what I saw in my photos. I am amazed at things I was seeing in my photos! The different color schemes were surprising & beautiful. I was fascinated by all the different directions & colors of the flames in just 1 photo but the most intriguing thing to me is that I could actually see faces & animal shapes in quite a few of my photo’s. Another fascinating thing to me is when I show people my photo’s, they see different things than I have been seeing! Everyone I showed my photos to are intrigued & want to see more so I thought it would be cool to provide a coffee table book of my photography so more people could enjoy what I’ve been able to create. It has been really nice to finally focus on 1 of my artist abilities again but I now pray, hope & trust that driving for a living can soon take the back seat over being an artist.

Book The Memory of Fire Trilogy

Download or read book The Memory of Fire Trilogy written by Eduardo Galeano and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2014-04-29 with total page 1348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All three books in the American Book Award–winning Memory of Fire Trilogy available in a single volume for the first time. Eduardo Galeano’s Memory of Fire Trilogy defies categorization—or perhaps creates its own. It is a passionate, razor-sharp, lyrical history of North and South America, from the birth of the continent’s indigenous peoples through the end of the twentieth century. The three volumes form a haunting and dizzying whole that resurrects the lives of Indians, conquistadors, slaves, revolutionaries, poets, and more. The first book, Genesis, pays homage to the many origin stories of the tribes of the Americas, and paints a verdant portrait of life in the New World through the age of the conquistadors. The second book, Faces and Masks, spans the two centuries between the years 1700 and 1900, in which colonial powers plundered their newfound territories, ultimately giving way to a rising tide of dictators. And in the final installment, Century of the Wind, Galeano brings his story into the twentieth century, in which a fractured continent enters the modern age as popular revolts blaze from North to South. This celebrated series is a landmark of contemporary Latin American writing, and a brilliant document of culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electric Literature 25 Best Novels of 2014 Largehearted Boy Favorite Novels of 2014 "An extraordinary new literary talent."--The Daily Telegraph "In part a portrait of the artist as a young woman, this deceptively modest-seeming, astonishingly inventive novel creates an extraordinary intimacy, a sensibility so alive it quietly takes over all your senses, quivering through your nerve endings, opening your eyes and heart. Youth, from unruly student years to early motherhood and a loving marriage--and then, in the book's second half, wilder and something else altogether, the fearless, half-mad imagination of youth, I might as well call it—has rarely been so freshly, charmingly, and unforgettably portrayed. Valeria Luiselli is a masterful, entirely original writer."--Francisco Goldman In Mexico City, a young mother is writing a novel of her days as a translator living in New York. In Harlem, a translator is desperate to publish the works of Gilberto Owen, an obscure Mexican poet. And in Philadelphia, Gilberto Owen recalls his friendship with Lorca, and the young woman he saw in the windows of passing trains. Valeria Luiselli's debut signals the arrival of a major international writer and an unexpected and necessary voice in contemporary fiction. "Luiselli's haunting debut novel, about a young mother living in Mexico City who writes a novel looking back on her time spent working as a translator of obscure works at a small independent press in Harlem, erodes the concrete borders of everyday life with a beautiful, melancholy contemplation of disappearance. . . . Luiselli plays with the idea of time and identity with grace and intuition." —Publishers Weekly

Book Peter Singer Under Fire

Download or read book Peter Singer Under Fire written by Jeffrey A. Schaler and published by Open Court. This book was released on 2011-09-30 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the leading ethical thinkers of the modern age, Peter Singer has repeatedly been embroiled in controversy. Protesters in Germany closed down his lectures, mistakenly thinking he was advocating Nazi views on eugenics. Conservative publisher Steve Forbes withdrew generous donations to Princeton after Singer was appointed professor of bioethics. His belief that infanticide is sometimes morally justified has appalled people from all walks of life. Peter Singer Under Fire gives a platform to his critics on many contentious issues. Leaders of the disability rights group Not Dead Yet attack Singer’s views on disability and euthanasia. Economists criticize the effectiveness of his ideas for solving global poverty. Philosophers expose problems in Singer’s theory of utilitarianism and ethicists refute his position on abortion. Singer’s engaging “Intellectual Autobiography” explains how he came by his controversial views, while detailed replies to each critic reveal further surprising aspects of his unique outlook.
