This is the first comma nel ment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. In doing so, he highlights the Bible's unique ability to reveal God to humanity in a way that informs our minds, transforms our hearts, and ignites our love. Book excerpt: The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage

Book Classic Teachings on the Nature of God

Download or read book Classic Teachings on the Nature of God written by R. C Sproul and published by Hendrickson Publishers. This book was released on 2010 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: R. C. Sproul has committed his life to clearly communicating deep, practical truths from God's Word to students and laypeople. His lucid teaching style brings clarity to the most difficult--and often contentious--biblical and theological questions. Gathered here in one volume are three of his best-selling books--over $40 worth of reading at a great low price. From Rudolf Otto's" mysterium tremendum" to Martin Luther's "insanity"and Jonathan Edwards's fiery sermons, Sproul's classic "The Holiness of God"illuminates history and Scripture to help readers understand--and live with--the tension that exists between God's terrifying holiness and his inexplicable grace. In "Chosen by God," Sproul tackles the divisive subject of predestination, and discusses God's sovereignty and the problem of evil, human freedom, and the task of evangelism. He explains that there is a mystery in God's ways but not contradiction; and paints a picture of a loving--not spiteful or whimsical--God who provides redemption for radically corrupt people."Pleasing God" explores the topic of sanctification--how we satisfy God by pursuing righteousness. Sproul examines the constant battle Christians wage against sin--pride, slothfulness, dishonesty. He reveals how many Christians have tragically abandoned the struggle, but that God delights in those who press on. Although Sproul brings a Reformed background and approach to topics, his work is not just for Calvinists but for all Christians who want to understand and build on the foundations of their faith.

Book excerpt: Christianity has tended to focus on right beliefs and right choices as the keys for personal growth. But biblical evidence and modern brain science show that our character is shaped more by whom we love than what we believe. Through conversations he had with Dallas Willard at the Heart & Soul Conference shortly before Dallas's death, Jim Wilder shows how we can train our brains to relate to God based on joyful, mutual attachment--which leads to emotional and spiritual maturity as our identity and character are formed by our relationship with God.

Book Jesus and Modern Thought Classic Reprint

Download or read book Jesus and Modern Thought Classic Reprint written by Stopford Augustus Brooke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus and Modern Thought This and kindred questions have always arisen, and the result has been, both in and outside the Church, that the life and death of Jesus have become subjects of such complex metaphysical discussions - as to how he could sufi'er, grow, increase in wisdom, be tempted or even die, that all simplicity of thought upon the matter is at an end. Then men who do not take pleasure in solving intellectual problems, and who want some clear foundation for spiritual feeling, end at last in feeling towards Jesus in two plain fashions - either as if he were wholly a man, or as if he were wholly God. In the first instance they really believe what we be lieve, whether they stay or not in the Churches; in the second, they tend to lose sight of God the Father altogether, and to replace Him in their hearts by Jesus; or they worship, as they want them, two Gods. Many abide easily in conclusions of this Second kind, but as many are at last driven to ask - Is all this really conceivable, or if conceivable, is it comforting Then they are obliged to confess that they are in a maze, and have but little consolation in losing themselves therein. Book excerpt: What difference would it make for Old Testament theology if we turned our attention from the more dramatic, forceful "mighty acts of God" to the more subdued, but more realistic themes of later writings in the Hebrew Bible? Book Jesus and the Thought of the World Classic Reprint

Download or read book Jesus and the Thought of the World Classic Reprint written by Rabbi Martin a Meyer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus and the Thought of the World Friends, in one way I rejoice in the triunity, in which I have the honor to be the first speaker; in another sense I regret it. I rejoice that we can discuss such a theme that you have invited me, a Jew, to discuss this matter with you. On the other hand I regret its futility, save as regards the liberal attitude it may encourage, for, after all is said and done, you are not going to be persuaded by me, and I fancy I shall not be persuaded by you. It reminds me of the public disputations held in the Middle Ages between Jews and Catholics; the futile result was usually the same. The Jews went away feeling they had presented irrefutable arguments on their side, and the Cath olics, to disprove these arguments, generally caused many Jews either to be put to death or to be forcibly baptized; so, of course, the question remained just where it was for both parties. It goes without saying that we are talking as friends, honest friends, one with the other, just as honestly as I should expect that a Christian would discuss some point in my Jewish belief with me - differing from me naturally, because he is a Christian and I am a Jew, agreeing with me at certain points because he is a Christian and I am a Jew. Yet each of us must frankly present his own point of view without malice, with no idea of controversy, yet each emphasizing his angle of vision. Frankly, the whole matter of the world's views of the person of Jesus is one of those subjects that I feel will only be understood by the presentation of every point of view. I have spent my last week, not in reading what the Jews have to say about Jesus, but reading a Roman Catholictreatise telling me what the Catholic Church has to say about Christ, so that I might thoroughly appreciate what the orthodox view of his life is. Orthodox Judiasm has nothing to do, absolutely nothing to do, with Jesus or Christianity. No Jew could ever understand how the religion preaching love could have per secuted the Jews and Judaism unfailingly, generation after generation. The result on the part of the orthodox Jew was an unqualified contempt for everything Christian. Nor did he hesitate to express his feelings in this matter. It crystallized itself in a Hebrew version of the life of Jesus, in which all the facts of that life were explained on a frankly naturalistic basis. It further expressed itself in an abundant polemic and apologetic literature, in which these bold spirits placed the Jewish viewpoint before a hostile world. It indulged freely in criticism of Christian doctrines; contradicted the prevailing Christian exegesis of the Old Testament and even did not hesitate to speak its mind of Christian practices and persecutions. It was the frank expression of a self-reliant, self-intelligent group, who feared nothing more than faithlessness to its ideal. Many a one paid for his boldness with his life, after hav ing been subjected to unspeakable torture; but once under stand the point of view of this little handful of rejected and misunderstood people, as found in the literature of the Jew of the Middle Age, and you can appreciate the spirit of the Jew in all ages. If you want to understand that remarkable age of history you must remember that the dark ages of Christianity were parallel with an age of um paralleled spiritual and intellectual glory for the Jew; that it was not until the year 1492, after the world seemed to have refused its last resting-place to the Jew, that what we regard as the dark ages of Jewry had their beginning.
