Book The Ballad and the Folk RLE Folklore

Download or read book The Ballad and the Folk RLE Folklore written by David Buchan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ballad is an enduring and universal literary genre. In this book, first published in 1972, David Buchan is concerned to establish the nature of a ballad and of the people who produced it through a study of the regional tradition of the Northeast of Scotland, the most fertile ballad area in Britain. His account of this tradition has two parallel aims, one specifically literary – to investigate the ballad as oral literature – and one broadly ethnographic – to set the regional tradition in its social context. Dr Buchan applies the interesting and important work which has recently been done on oral tradition in Europe on the relationship of the ballad to society to his study of this particular part of Scotland. He examines a nonliterate society to discover what factors besides nonliteracy helped foster its ballad tradition. He analyses the processes of composition and transmission in the oral ballad, and considers the changes which removed nonliteracy, altered social patterns, and seriously affected the ballad tradition. By demonstrating how people who could neither read nor write were able to compose literature of a high order, David Buchan provides a convincing explanation of the ballad’s perennial appeal and an answer to the ‘ballad enigma’. His book is also a valuable study in social history of this culturally distinct region, the Northeast of Scotland.

Book Popular Songs and Ballads of Han China

Download or read book Popular Songs and Ballads of Han China written by Anne Birrell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-05-17 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1988, compiles 77 songs and ballads (yüeh-fu) of early imperial China (200 BC – AD 300). Each song-text is newly translated and fully annotated and explicated. Dr Birrell deals systematically with problems of the earliest sources, dating, attribution, textual variants, multiforms, metre, generic title, song title and structure. This careful and thorough treatment is especially necessary for a corpus of anonymous popular texts which are often corrupt, structurally confusing, laconic and full of nonsense words and colloquialisms. Her introductory essay provides a socio-historical context for this material and charts its literary transmission, while singling out special characteristics of the genre, such as musical, oral and dramatic elements. The main text, arranged into eleven chapters plus an introduction, is supplemented by notes, appendices, maps, chronology, bibliography and index.

Book Later English Broadside Ballads

Download or read book Later English Broadside Ballads written by John Holloway and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2005-09 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lively, exciting, amusing - this collection of ballads reveal the bawdy, anarchic sub-culture of England before the Industrial Revolution. Drawn from the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, it demonstrates the great wealth and variety of the English broadside ballads during these periods. At this time political balladry was rife and Irish ballads began to be composed in English - their distinctive background giving them a unique range of poetry. Indeed, these ballads represent an extensive, varied and important area of English literature. Written, as the editors observe, 'to provide a moment in which listeners could enjoy verse, wit and song', they very much reflect the lively observation, love of detail and social awareness of the age of the novel. This volume includes 127 ballads, ranging from 'Admiral Benbow' and 'The Jolly Bacchanal' to 'The Bottle the Best Companion' and 'The Young Man's Fortune'. Reprinted from contemporary or near-contemporary broadsides in the Madden Collection at the University Library, Cambridge, the head and tail blocks, a distinguished feature of the original texts, are also reproduced for this edition. The introduction is designed to enable individuals to read the texts in perspective and with pleasure. The book further includes a select bibliography and an index of ballad titles. This book was first published in 1975.

Book The Poetry Handbook

Download or read book The Poetry Handbook written by John Lennard and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-01-06 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Poetry Handbook is a lucid and entertaining guide to the poet's craft, and an invaluable introduction to practical criticism for students. Chapters on each element of poetry, from metre to gender, offer a wide-ranging general account, and end by looking at two or three poems from a small group (including works by Donne, Elizabeth Bishop, Geoffrey Hill, and Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott), to build up sustained analytical readings. Thorough and compact, with notes and quotations supplemented by detailed reference to the Norton Anthology of Poetry and a companion website with texts, links, and further discussion, The Poetry Handbook is indispensable for all school and undergraduate students of English. A final chapter addresses examinations of all kinds, and sample essays by undergraduates are posted on the website. Critical and scholarly terms are italicised and clearly explained, both in the text and in a complete glossary; the volume also includes suggestions for further reading. The first edition, widely praised by teachers and students, showed how the pleasures of poetry are heightened by rigorous understanding and made that understanding readily available. This second edition — revised, expanded, updated, and supported by a new companion website - confirm The Poetry Handbook as the best guide to poetry available in English.
