Folk who dwell in it seldom stray farther west than the Bowery, rarely cross the river that flows sluggishly on its eastern border. They live their lives out, with something that might be termed a feverish stolidity, in the dim crowded flats, and upon the thronged streets. To the people who have homes on Central Park West, to the frail winged moths who flutter up and down Broadway, this section does not exist. Its poor are not the picturesque poor of the city's Latin quarter, its criminals seldom win to the notoriety of a front page and inch-high headlines; it almost never produces a genius for the world to smile upon - its talent does not often break away from the undefined, but none the less certain, limits of the district. It is curious that this part of town is seldom featured in song or story, for it is certainly neither dull nor unproductive of plot. • Pages : 345 pages

Download or read book The Eyes of Faith written by Ormond Rush and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2010 Lynlea Rodger Australia Theological Form (ATF) Press Theological Book Prize The Eyes of Faith presents a systematic theology of the sense of the faithful (sensus fidelium) and shows the fundamental and necessary interrelationship between sensus fidelium, tradition, Scripture, theology, and the magisterium. Ormond Rush provides fresh perspectives on a number of issues. He proposes that tradition and Scripture are the products of the sensus fidelium and that the inspiration of Scripture is best understood in terms of the Holy Spirit working through the sensus fidelium. In addressing the role of the sensus fidei in the lives of individual believers, the book provides a unique approach to the way Christians make sense of their faith within the diverse contexts of daily life. It shows how the imaginative capacity of the sensus fidei forms a foundational notion for understanding the diversity of spiritualities, inculturations, and contextualizations of the Gospel in the history of the church up to the present. This ecclesial activity of interpreting the Christ event through the sensus fidelium enables the church to proclaim the Gospel in new times and cultures throughout history. The Eyes of Faith proposes that, for an effective teaching of the faith to contemporary Christians, the distinctive roles of the magisterium and of theology must be conceived primarily in terms of, and in relationship to, the ecclesial Spirit-given capacity of the sensus fidelium. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Ormond Rush is lecturer of theology and former president of St. Paul's Theological College in Banyo, Australia, and is president of the Australian Catholic Theological Association. He is the author of Still Interpreting Vatican II: Some Hermeneutical Principles and The Reception of Doctrine: An Appropriation of Hans Robert Jauss' Reception Aesthetics and Literary Hermeneutics. PRAISE FOR THE BOOK: "In addition to its internal argumentation, the book's extensive footnotes, Scriptural references, and Church documents will make it a tremendously valuable tool for advanced researchers in several theological areas, including pneumatology, ecclesiology, Scripture studies, and hemeneutics. . . . Highly recommended." -- C. A. Montevecchio, Choice "Some works of scholarship stand out, providing a point of reference and showing the way forward. Orm Rush's study is in this class, and it is not surprising that its first release by CUA Press is a splendid hardback volume. This work makes a significant contribution to Catholic Theology." -- Rev. John Thornhill SM, The Australasian Catholic Record "Rush provides a theologically perceptive panorama of the sensus fidelium at work in the church under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. In addition to offering numerous insights--usually beneficial and sometimes provocative--Rush's study is extraordinarily well-researched. . . . [T]his volume is an outstandingly creative and comprehensive theological study of the grace of the Holy Spirit acting through the sensus fidelium in the reception of revelation in the church."--John Ford C.S.C., Theological Studies "Rush has here provided us with a sophisticated study of theological hermeneutics, as well as a foundational work in ecclesiology."--Lawrence S. Cunningham, Commonweal "This detailed and well-argued book explores the phenomenon of reception in both the Bible and in contemporary Roman Catholic tradition. . . . An insightful study for those interested in the newest wave of Roman Catholic dogmatic theology, which tends to draw deeply from biblical sources as well as Vatican teaching, this book genuinely advances discussions of the doctrine of reception." --Aaron Klink, Religious Studies Review

Book The Character of Jesus

Download or read book The Character of Jesus written by Charles Edward Jefferson and published by Pantianos Classics. This book was released on 1908 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography of Jesus Christ focuses upon the personal characteristics and traits which He demonstrated to the peoples of ancient Judaea. The author seeks to demystify and clarify the subject, with a rigorous reading of the New Testament lore and other accounts of Jesus. The character of the Son of God was established when He approached others with interest in their life situations, in the words He delivered to them, and the deeds He undertook in life. The author posits that Jesus wanted mankind to arrive at the truth of what God intends for humanity by observing his own personality; He set a thorough example of conduct for all men, of the virtues which believers in the Lord can carry through life. Each quality Christ displays is given its own chapter. The author frequently quotes scripture to help his narration. We discover that Jesus was a candid person; delivering messages with frankness and clarity. He displayed patience, generosity, courage and enthusiasm in his daily life and sermons. Later on the work discusses the connections Jesus had with God; the holiness and reverence for the divinity He displays are significant. Finally the work summarizes the overall greatness of Christ. Charles Edward Jefferson was a clergyman who spent decades preaching in Ohio, writing several books on sermonizing and on various Christian topics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Twinkling of an Eye So much for the letter. The moral of it lies on the surface. There are some persons who seem unable to see anything from the side of real, actual life - that Ladies' committee could not -whose vision is narrowed down to the tiny slit of their own cramped, cabined life and thought, they have no true outlook upon life, as a whole. I preface this foreward with the above incident, because I am perfectly certain that the standpoint from which I have written this book will be utterly, absolutely misunderstood by many earnest, loving-hearted people, whose eyes, with my own, have caught the upward gaze from whence we look for the return of the Lord Jesus Christ. His earliest facts were Observed appearances, and his earliest theories were the fictions of his imagination' but as civilization grew, he learned that appearances were deceitful, and that ideal interpretations, like those of the Greek and other ancient sages, were erroneous. The inductive method of Aristotle, revived by Bacon, finally gave the rule Of scientific progress, and since Bacon's time the advance of positive science has been more and more rapid and sure. The lesson of Bacon is, that a knowledge of the true nature of things cannot be found out by thinking alone; but has to be discovered by reasoning upon the results Of Observation and experiment. Book Rembrandt Is in the Wind

Download or read book Rembrandt Is in the Wind written by Russ Ramsey and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2022-03-22 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do art and faith intersect? How does art help us see our own lives more clearly? What can we understand about God and humanity by looking at the lives of artists? Striving for beauty, art also reveals what is broken. It presents us with the tremendous struggles and longings common to the human experience. And it says a lot about our Creator too. Great works of art can speak to the soul in a unique way. Rembrandt Is in the Wind is an invitation to discover some of the world's most celebrated artists and works and how each of them illuminates something about God, people, and the purpose of life. Part art history, part biblical study, part philosophy, and part analysis of the human experience, this book is nonetheless all story. From Michelangelo to Vincent van Gogh to Edward Hopper, the lives of the artists in this book illustrate the struggle of living in this world and point to the beauty of the redemption available to us in Christ. Each story is different. Some conclude with resounding triumph while others end in struggle. But all of them raise important questions about humanity's hunger and capacity for glory, and all of them teach us to love and see beauty. "The artists featured in these pages—artists who devoted their lives and work to what is good, true, and beautiful—remind us that we can, and should, do the same." —Karen Swallow Prior, author of On Reading Well

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Added Upon: A Story A religion, to be worth while, must give satis factory answers to the great questions of life What am I? Whence came I? What is the object of this life? And What is my destiny? True, we walk by faith, and not by sight, but yet the eye of faith must have some light by which to see. Added Upon is an effort to give in brief an outline of the scheme of things, the ways of God to men as taught by the Gospel of Christ and believed in by the Latter-day Saints; and to justify and praise these ways, by a glance along the Great Plan, from a point in the distant past to a point in the future not so far away, it is to be hoped. On subjects where little of a definite character is revealed, the story, of necessity, could not go into great detail. It is suggestive only; but it is hoped that the mind of the reader, illumined by the Spirit of the Lord, will be able to fill in all the details that the heart may desire, to wander at will in the gar den of the Lord, and dwell in peace in the mansions of the Father.
