Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book The Expositor s Bible Commentary

Download or read book The Expositor s Bible Commentary written by Tremper Longman, III and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2008-07-21 with total page 866 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a completely revised edition of Gold Medallion Award-winning Expositor's Bible Commentary. This revised commentary has undergone substantial revisions that keep pace with current evangelical scholarship and resources. Just as its previous edition, it offers a major contribution to the study and understanding of the Scriptures. Providing pastors and Bible students with a comprehensive and scholarly tool for the exposition of the Scriptures and the teaching and proclamation of the gospel, this ten-volume reference work has become a staple of seminary and college libraries and pastors' studies worldwide. Its fifty-six contributors---thirty of them are new---represent the best in evangelical scholarship committed to the divine inspiration, complete trustworthiness, and full authority of the Bible. As before, The Expositor's Bible Commentary features full NIV text, but also refers freely to other translations and to the original languages. In addition to its exposition, each book of the Bible has an introduction, outline, and an updated bibliography. Notes on textual questions and special problems are correlated with the expository units; transliteration and translation of Semitic and Greek words make the more technical notes accessible to readers unacquainted with the biblical languages. In matters where marked differences of opinion exist, commentators, while stating their own convictions, deal fairly and irenically with opposing views.

Book Approaching the World s Religions Volume 2

Download or read book Approaching the World s Religions Volume 2 written by Robert Boyd and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-06-20 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evangelical theology strives to be evangelical, conservative, and contemporary. In a world in which everyone is "Christian," evangelical theology provides a balanced position between fundamentalism and liberalism. While theological debates within the family will occur, to be evangelical is a breath of fresh air for many. However, we do not live in such a world. We do find ourselves living in a secular, global society. It is secular because no religious organization dictates how we live our lives. It is global for at least two reasons. First, our technology brings us immediately in contact with those faraway places. Second, and of more importance, we can simply step outside our front doors and encounter our neighborhoods that reflect a global pluralism. This raises the question, how shall we then live? The intent of An Evangelical Theology of Religions is to suggest a direction for evangelicals to think about the secular, global society in which they live in a way that is not only conservative but also evangelical and contemporary. The final essay strives to address the evangelical aspect of our tradition that places an emphasis on the Great Commission and the law of love.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor Adv. Ila-r. Iii. 1. The question as to whether St. Matthew did or did not write in Hebrew would take a volume to discuss, and would then leave us not very much nearer to a decision so far as our present subject is concerned. In the case of the principal witness Papias (ap. Busch. H. E. Iii. The difficulty is not so much to determine the historical value of the statement (for this, proceeding as it does from the first half of the second century, cannot but be considerable) as to explain with reference to it the phenomena presented by the Gospel. The same difficulty attaches to the fragment relating to St. Mark. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Ethnic Religious Identity of the Ethiopian in Acts 8 26 40

Download or read book The Ethnic Religious Identity of the Ethiopian in Acts 8 26 40 written by Jongmun Jung and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-05-30 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines the background of the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts 8:26–40. For a comprehensive study, it utilizes echoic allusion, cultural background, and narrative criticism. It explores the textual tradition of Deut 23:1–8 in Jewish literature, with a particular focus on Isaiah’s inclusive presentation of “eunuchs” and “foreigners” in contrast to the Deuteronomy stipulation for the assembly of the Lord. This work also explores the ancient practice of castration, the Jewish exiles in Elephantine, and Jewish pilgrimage to reconstruct the cultural background of the Ethiopian eunuch. Additionally, it focuses on Luke’s authorial role in presenting the gospel’s geographic, ethnic, and religious expansion to identify the Ethiopian’s ethnic and religious identity in the narrative development of the three trajectories. The conclusion drawn is that the Ethiopian eunuch cannot be identified as an uncircumcised gentile. Instead, he is more like an African man of Jewish descent, included in the Abrahamic covenant but excluded from the cultic setting of worship in the temple.
