Book Stanley

Download or read book Stanley written by Tim Jeal and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2011-10-06 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Morton Stanley was a cruel imperialist - a bad man of Africa. Or so we think: but as Tim Jeal brilliantly shows, the reality of Stanley's life is yet more extraordinary. Few people know of his dazzling trans-Africa journey, a heart-breaking epic of human endurance which solved virtually every one of the continent's remaining geographical puzzles. With new documentary evidence, Jeal explores the very nature of exploration and reappraises a reputation, in a way that is both moving and truly majestic.

Book H M Stanley and the Literature of Exploration

Download or read book H M Stanley and the Literature of Exploration written by Brian H. Murray and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis constitutes the first sustained single-author study of the writings of the Welsh-American explorer Henry Morton Stanley (1840-1904). Stanley's works have generally been treated as generic examples of 'colonial discourse' or simply as a historical footnote to the canon of colonial adventure fiction. Little attention has been paid to the possible reasons for the phenomenal popularity and enduring appeal of these texts. I will expand upon previous readings of Stanley not by ignoring the imperial context but by acknowledging that 'imperial discourse' was itself in dialogue with various other social and cultural trends. My concern throughout is with the exploratory encounter as modernising event - not simply in the sense of the 'civilised' explorer shedding light on the 'dark continent' -- but in the sense that the retransmission of these frontier narratives in the centre of empire had a transformative affect on how Britons conceived of themselves as modern subjects. -- By emphasising the imperial 'margin' as a space in which modernity happens and the exploration narrative as the means by which this process is documented, represented and enacted, I challenge conventional notions of modernity as an urban phenomenon diffused from imperial metropolis to colonial periphery. Focusing on the (largely ignored) Welsh and American aspects of Stanley's identity, allows us to decentre the notion of a fixed imperial metropolis and forces us to acknowledge the complexity, ambivalence and richness of the literature of the exploratory contact zone.

Book excerpt: 'Meticulously and grippingly told.' Evening Standard Henry Morton Stanley took his life and reputation into his own hands when he decided to explore the most dangerous parts of uncharted Central Africa in the 19th Century. Born into poverty, Stanley grew up in a Welsh workhouse - only to forge his own path to success and international acclaim within the dangerous world of exploration. Undaunted by many obstacles, Stanley braved life and limb with fierce determination on his quest to uncover unexplored realms of the earth. He traversed the length of the Congo River, the circumference of Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika - and even finished his adventure with the famed encounter with Dr Livingstone. McLynn takes the reader on a wild journey steeped in details of the man behind the mission. The biography captures the colour and drama of Stanley's engrossing narrative. McLynn combines the success of Stanley's achievements with a deeper look into his motivations and personal history to create an insightful study into of a genuine hero, whose legacy resonates today. Frank McLynn is a British author, biographer, historian and journalist. He is noted for critically acclaimed biographies of Napoleon Bonaparte, Robert Louis Stevenson, Carl Jung, Richard Francis Burton and Henry Morton Stanley. He is also the author of Fitzroy Maclean and Bipolar, a novel about Roald Amundsen, published by Sharpe Books. Praise for Frank McLynn: 'Excellent ... entertaining.' The Spectator 'The definitive biography.' TLS 'Does much to explain the contradictory accounts left to us of the man.' London Review of Books 'Frank McLynn's achievement ... is to give Charles Edward a solidarity and three-dimensional reality that he usually lacks ... His account of the risings themselves is exemplary and he offers the best case yet for the nearness to success of the '45. What is usually seen as the last shiver of an anachronistic and romantic throwback emerges as a genuine alternative to Whiggery and the Act of Settlement.' Brian Morton, TES 'A broad canvas, dealing not only with sober historical truth but with the magic spell that either seduced or repelled Fielding, Sterne, Smollett, Burns, Scott, Borrow, Buchan, Stevenson and a hundred Irish poets...' Diarmaid O'Muirithe, Irish Independent 'McLynn is to be congratulated on a great success, a work ... of mature reflection, acute judgement and great humanity.' Jeremy Black, History 'A readable and fresh study ... thoroughly researched.' Esmond Wright, Contemporary Review 'Packed with fascinating detail.' Denis Hills, choosing his book of the year in the Spectator 'Fitzroy Maclean has found his Boswell in Frank McLynn.' Trevor Royle, Scotland on Sunday 'Most entertaining.' Richard West 'Important, timely and balanced.' Soldier

Book excerpt: The nightly custom of gathering around the campfire, and entertaining one another with stories, began in 1875, after Sabadu, a page of King Mtesa, had astonished his hearers with the legend of the "Blameless Priest." Our circle was free to all, and was frequently well attended; for when it was seen that the more accomplished narrators were suitably rewarded, and that there was a great deal of amusement to be derived, few could resist the temptation to approach and listen, unless fatigue or illness prevented them.
