Excerpt: ... copula and "is" as existential predicate. Following Aristotle, they maintain that we can not legitimately infer Homerus est from Homerus est poeta. Secundum accidens enim praedicatur esse de Homero, quod est poeta, sed non secundum se praedicatur de Homero, quod est1. Moreover when these supporters of the theory of universal existential implication of categorical propositions come to apply their theory to particular instances then they save the appearance of consistency only by resorting to such ways of escape as are suggested by the arguments dealt with in the preceding sections, namely, that the ultimate subject is real, or that the subject within the judgment has at all events " logical" (or " ideal") existence, or that it exists in some universe of discourse even when it does not exist in the world of reality. But these, as we have already seen, are only irrelevant makeshifts. 13. The Categorical And The Hypothetical Form Of Judgment. One more view we must deal with in conclusion. Ueberweg2 and others maintain, against Herbart, 1 Aristotle, Hermeneutica, cap. xi., and the parallel passages in Boethius, Abelard, etc. Compare also De Morgan, Formal Logic, p. 63. "The most common uses of the verb are: --first, absolute identity, as in 'the thing he sold you is the one I sold him': secondly, agreement in a certain particular or particulars understood, as in 'He is a negro, ' said of a European in reference to his colour: thirdly, possession of a quality, as in 'the rose is red': fourthly, reference of a species to its genus, as in 'man is an animal.' All these uses are independent of the use of the verb alone, denoting existence, as in 'man is i.e. exists.'"-Logik, 68 and 85, pp. 167 f. and 238 f. in 4th ed. Drobisch...

Book Aristotle s Syllogism and the Creation of Modern Logic

Download or read book Aristotle s Syllogism and the Creation of Modern Logic written by Lukas M. Verburgt and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-01-26 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering a bold new vision on the history of modern logic, Lukas M. Verburgt and Matteo Cosci focus on the lasting impact of Aristotle's syllogism between the 1820s and 1930s. For over two millennia, deductive logic was the syllogism and syllogism was the yardstick of sound human reasoning. During the 19th century, this hegemony fell apart and logicians, including Boole, Frege and Peirce, took deductive logic far beyond its Aristotelian borders. However, contrary to common wisdom, reflections on syllogism were also instrumental to the creation of new logical developments, such as first-order logic and early set theory. This volume presents the period under discussion as one of both tradition and innovation, both continuity and discontinuity. Modern logic broke away from the syllogistic tradition, but without Aristotle's syllogism, modern logic would not have been born. A vital follow up to The Aftermath of Syllogism, this book traces the longue durée history of syllogism from Richard Whately's revival of formal logic in the 1820s through the work of David Hilbert and the Göttingen school up to the 1930s. Bringing together a group of major international experts, it sheds crucial new light on the emergence of modern logic and the roots of analytic philosophy in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive introduction to formal logic, Logic and Philosophy: A Modern Introduction is a rigorous yet accessible text, appropriate for students encountering the subject for the first time. Abundant, carefully crafted exercise sets accompanied by a clear, engaging exposition build to an exploration of sentential logic, first-order predicate logic, the theory of descriptions, identity, relations, set theory, modal logic, and Aristotelian logic. And as its title suggests, Logic and Philosophy is devoted not only to logic but also to the philosophical debates that led to the development of the field. Much new material has been added for the 13th edition. An introduction to set theory and its relationship to logic and mathematics, including philosophical issues, is now part of Chapter 13. Chapter 15 is an introduction to modal logic and Kripke semantics, concluding with a discussion of philosophical problems with any logical accommodation of modalities. Instructors who do not wish to present proof methods will find chapters on truth trees for both sentential and first-order logic, and a presentation of trees for modal logic. Special features of this text include presentations of the history of logic, alternatives to traditional methods of conditional and indirect proof, and a discussion of semantic problems with universal and existential instantiations. Throughout, the authors are sensitive to philosophical issues that arise from the relationship between ordinary language, symbolic logic, and justifications for the syntax and semantics of the various symbolic languages. Discussions range from the justification of the truth table for the sentential rendering of if . . . then statements to semantic and syntactic paradoxes, including some troubling paradoxes that arise in ordinary language (e.g., the so-called hangman or surprise quiz paradox). Logic and Philosophy includes ample material for a one-semester or two-semester course and provides a thorough preparation for more advanced logic courses.

Book Aristotle s Theory of Predication

Download or read book Aristotle s Theory of Predication written by Allan T. Bäck and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book claims that Aristotle followed an aspect theory of predication. On it statements make a basic assertion of existence that can be more or less qualified. It is claimed that the aspect theory solves many puzzles about Aristotle's philosophy and gives a new unity to his logic and metaphysics. The book considers Aristotle's views on predication relative to Greek philology, Aristotle's philosophical milieu, and the history and philosophy of predication theory. It offers new perspectives on such issues as existential import; the relation of Categories 2 & 4; the place of differentiae and propria; the predication of matter; unnatural predication; and the square of opposition. It ends by comparing Aristotle's theory with current ones.

Book Philosophy and Logic in Central Europe from Bolzano to Tarski

This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ways of doing it, but it is wrong to project it far into the past: it did not exist at the turn of the century and only became clearly apparent after the Second World War. I recently taught at an American university on the his tory of philosophy from Balzano to Husserl. The course title had to come from a fixed pool and gave trouble. Was it philosophical logic, the nine teenth century, or phenomenology? A logic title would connote over this period Frege, Russell, Carnap, perhaps a mention of Boole: not continental enough. The nineteenth century? The century of Kant's successors: Fichte, Hegel, Schopenhauer, Feuer bach, Marx, Nietzsche? What have they to do with Balzano, Lotze, Brentano, Meinong, Husserl and Twardowski? Even tually 'Phenomenology' was chosen, misdescribing more than half of the course. That illustrates the problems one faces in trying to work against the picture of the period which is ingrained in minds and syllabuses. This book arises from my efforts to combat that picture. I backed into writing about the history of recent philosophy rather than setting out to do so. The beginning was chance. In Manchester in the early seventies, at a time when most English philosophy departments breathed re cycled Oxford air, the intellectual atmosphere derived from Cambridge and Warsaw, spiced with a breath of Freiburg and Paris.
