Book Noise from the North End

Download or read book Noise from the North End written by Dave Bingham and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2015-10-22 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was the 1960’s. The British Invasion was under way as The Who, Beatles and Rolling Stones dominated the top of the charts. In Canada, Toronto’s trending Yorkville district was attracting Canadian acts to its many coffee houses and nightclubs. In 1965, Canada’s Ugly Ducklings burst onto the music scene with their gritty garage-punk style and the rest is music history. Noise from the North End is a wild, energetic, original and enduring story of one rock band’s journey through Canada’s music scene, from smoky coffee houses to high school dances to bars and nightclubs throughout Canada in the 60s and 70s. It is also a compelling chronicle of a music industry often unwilling to get behind its talented and popular musicians and really promote them; to the extent some moved to the U.S. where their careers finally took off. Noise from the North End contains never before told anecdotes and never before seen photographs that explore a unique era in Canadian music.

In each story, young children find themselves in bizarre predicaments with supernatural situations. There are fourteen stories in all that range from monsters to magic to time travel. The book also includes two unique poems that are fun and delightful. An eclectic range of themes abound in the book. Among those are: a detective mystery, a historical adventure, a suspicious janitor, a strange virus, space travel, a magical pencil, an ominous visitor, a battle with a monster, time travel, mass hysteria, an unexpected hero and some peculiar mayonnaise. For most of the tales, young children are at the center and must work together to find interesting solutions to the eminent problems they face. The characters are easy to identify with as they resemble personalities you would find in any mixture of citizens. Each has his or her own individual style, personality and flaws. Willakaville brings a human touch encompassing a broad range of emotional conflict and self-awareness. Willakaville is almost one hundred fifty pages in length and the chapters range from five to twenty five pages. Each chapter begins with a custom illustration of distinctive artwork created by the author. The writing style is simple enough for younger children to understand, yet interesting enough for those who are older. The stories are generally geared for those aged 8-12. It makes a great bedtime read for the little ones. However, it will be enjoyed at any age. The stories are fast-paced and creative with intermittent silliness sprinkled along the way. Each account aims to teach a life lesson, whether it be on manners, self-esteem, censorship, prejudice or ownership. Some of the tales tackle issues of the future, such as artificial intelligence, or epidemics. Willakaville will stir one’s thoughts and curiosity as it meanders through social and personal issues Willakaville is a fun ride that evokes the imagination and tickles the funny bone. If you are someone that is into action, adventure, comedy and creativity, this is the book for you or someone you love.

Book Unhomed

    Book Details:
  • Author : Pamela Robertson Wojcik
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2024-04-09
  • ISBN : 0520390377
  • Pages : 291 pages

Download or read book Unhomed written by Pamela Robertson Wojcik and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-04-09 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this rich cultural history, Pamela Roberston Wojcik examines America's ambivalent and shifting attitude toward homelessness. She considers film cycles from five distinct historical moments that show characters who are unhomed and placeless, mobile rather than fixed—characters who fail, resist, or opt out of the mandate for a home of one's own. From the tramp films of the silent era to the 2021 Oscar-winning Nomadland, Wojcik reveals a tension in the American imaginary between viewing homelessness as deviant and threatening or emblematic of freedom and independence. Blending social history with insights drawn from a complex array of films, both canonical and fringe, Wojcik effectively "unhomes" dominant narratives that cast aspirations for success and social mobility as the focus of American cinema, reminding us that genres of precarity have been central to American cinema (and the American story) all along.

Book Where Does It Hurt

Download or read book Where Does It Hurt written by Jonathan Bush and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-05-15 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bold new remedy for the sprawling and wasteful health care industry. Where else but the doctor’s office do you have to fill out a form on a clipboard? Have you noticed that hospital bills are almost unintelligible, except for the absurdly high dollar amount? Why is it that technology in other industries drives prices down, but in health care it’s the reverse? And why, in health care, is the customer so often treated as a mere bystander—and an ignorant one at that? The same American medical establishment that saves lives and performs wondrous miracles is also a $2.7 trillion industry in deep dysfunction. And now, with the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), it is called on to extend full benefits to tens of millions of newly insured. You might think that this would leave us with a bleak choice— either to devote more of our national budget to health care or to make do with less of it. But there’s another path. In this provocative book, Jonathan Bush, cofounder and CEO of athenahealth, calls for a revolution in health care to give customers more choices, freedom, power, and information, and at far lower prices. With humor and a tell-it-likeit- is style, he picks up insights and ideas from his days as an ambulance driver in New Orleans, an army medic, and an entrepreneur launching a birthing start-up in San Diego. In struggling to save that dying business, Bush’s team created a software program that eventually became athenahealth, a cloud-based services company that handles electronic medical records, billing, and patient communications for more than fifty thousand medical providers nationwide. Bush calls for disruption of the status quo through new business models, new payment models, and new technologies that give patients more control of their care and enhance the physicianpatient experience. He shows how this is already happening. From birthing centers in Florida to urgent care centers in West Virginia, upstarts are disrupting health care by focusing on efficiency, innovation, and customer service. Bush offers a vision and plan for change while bringing a breakthrough perspective to the debates surrounding Obamacare. You’ll learn how: • Well-intended government regulations prop up overpriced incumbents and slow the pace of innovation. • Focused, profit-driven disrupters are chipping away at the dominance of hospitals by offering routine procedures at lower cost. • Scrappy digital start-ups are equipping providers and patients with new apps and technologies to access medical data and take control of care. • Making informed choices about the care we receive and pay for will enable a more humane and satisfying health care system to emerge. Bush’s plan calls for Americans not only to demand more from providers but also to accept more responsibility for our health, to weigh risks and make hard choices—in short, to take back control of an industry that is central to our lives and our economy.
