Book The Art of Cultural Exchange

Download or read book The Art of Cultural Exchange written by Ilana Strozenberg and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2019-03-26 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can cultural exchange be understood as a mutual act of translation? Or are elements of a country’s cultural identity inevitably lost in the act of exchange? Brazil and Great Britain, although unlikely collaborators, have shared an artistic dialogue that can be traced back some 500 years. This publication, arising from the namesake research project funded by the United Kingdom’s Arts and Humanities Research Council, seeks to understand and raise awareness of the present practices of cultural exchange between Brazil and Great Britain in relation to their historical legacy. Presenting five case studies and eight position papers, this research-based project investigates how artists interpret, transmit and circulate ideas, ideologies and forms of knowledge with specific reference to the production of new ‘translations’ produced from and, where possible, between peripheral territories. Written in accessible language, the case studies describe the experience of artists, managers and cultural leaders dealing with important challenges in the creative sector regarding the translation of creative and learning arts methodologies. Projects investigated are at the forefront of social arts collaborative practice, representing internationally influential initiatives that have had a demonstrable impact not only in urban centres and peripheries but also in isolated areas of central Brazil and the north of England. The position papers commissioned by the research from Brazilian and British academics and cultural leaders provide a remarkable variety of social, political, anthropological, historic and artistic perspectives of cultural exchange projects offering valuable experiences for those working in research, policy and for creative practitioners.

Download or read book Art beyond Borders written by Jérôme Bazin and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents and analyzes artistic interactions both within the Soviet bloc and with the West between 1945 and 1989. During the Cold War the exchange of artistic ideas and products united Europe’s avant-garde in a most remarkable way. Despite the Iron Curtain and national and political borders there existed a constant flow of artists, artworks, artistic ideas and practices. The geographic borders of these exchanges have yet to be clearly defined. How were networks, centers, peripheries (local, national and international), scales, and distances constructed? How did (neo)avant-garde tendencies relate with officially sanctioned socialist realism? The literature on the art of Eastern Europe provides a great deal of factual knowledge about a vast cultural space, but mostly through the prism of stereotypes and national preoccupations. By discussing artworks, studying the writings on art, observing artistic evolution and artists’ strategies, as well as the influence of political authorities, art dealers and art critics, the essays in Art beyond Borders compose a transnational history of arts in the Soviet satellite countries in the post war period.

Book excerpt: The riveting story of the country's first banking scandal in the first decades of the American republic This enthralling historical narrative of the birth of speculative capitalism in America opens in the 1790s when financial pioneer-turned-confidence-man Andrew Dexter, Jr. created a pyramid scheme founded on real estate speculation and the greed of banks, who freely printed the paper money he needed to finance the then tallest building in the United States-the Exchange Coffee House, a 153-room, seven-story colossus in downtown Boston. The story of Dexter's rise and eventual collapse offered an object lesson to the rising young nation, and presents striking parallels to the subprime mortgage meltdown and looming economic collapse of today.

Book The Exchange

Download or read book The Exchange written by Rime (Graffiti artist) and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Exchange project started in 2005, with just six participants from different areas of the United States. Today, the group includes thirty three members worldwide. The participants of The Exchange pair up with other artists from the group, trading names, outlines and personal styles with one another. One artist draws a sketch in the other artists name, scans it and sends it via email for the other artist to print out and execute. This procedure is repeated as the participating artists change, the idea being that all artists will have the opportunity to exchange artwork with everyone in the group at some point in time. The process aims to draw attention to distinct lettering styles and trends. The goal for the individual artist is to become more versatile and open minded through attempts at graffiti styles out of their personal comfort zone. As they rise to the challenge and push through old limitations the artists learn new techniques, ideas and compositions that they can take back into their own work. A fun project with positive outcomes for all collaborating artists, it is no wonder that it has become a worldwide trend as unaffiliated but similar projects start to appear on the scene.

Book excerpt: Soul Exchange is an exploration of the art and life of Dennis Paul Williams, a St. Martinville native who has made a lifelong career painting spirits in their heavenly realm. Williams was driven as a child to draw, paint, and explore artistic materials as he embraced his Creole heritage, where every aspect of life revolves around faith, celebration, and beauty. Williams's works have evolved into expressions of his deep spirituality. The objects he creates are imbued with beauty and intrinsic spiritual power. He has works in numerous museums in the U.S. and beyond. Many of his paintings can also be found in private collections around the world. Wiliams has also enjoyed a parallel career as a guitarist for twenty-six years in his brother's band, Nathan Williams and the Zydeco Cha Chas. The relationship between Williams's art, both music and painting, and his spirituality seem to embrace one word: healing. Whether an individual is overcoming illness, loneliness, or despair, Williams's art offers a prayer and moment of counseling. Soul Exchange presents over one hundred works by the artist. It also includes a portrait of Williams by book editor Philip Gould as well as an overview of his art by former Louisiana Poet Laureate Darrell Bourque.

Book John Miller

Download or read book John Miller written by John Miller and published by JRP Ringier. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The texts in this collection of John Miller's writing and criticism span a 20-year period, 1989 to 2009, and are divided into four sections: monographs, cultural essays, theory, and artist's statements. Many appear in English for the first time.Throughout, Miller aims to question artistic and curatorial theories and practices from the singular position of an artist-writer. This makes the production/reception issue an inherent dialectic in his work.Miller sees criticism as part of a comprehensive practice that includes teaching and, of course, art production. His approach differs from that of the academic or the journalist in that he implicates his own practice in the object of his critique. Moreover, rather than evaluating that object, Miller tries to articulate how it operates within a given political economy. He maintains that sociopolitical forces and ideological apparatuses underpin the production of all cultural 'artifacts'.This book is part of the Positions series, co-published with Les presses du réel and dedicated to artists' writings.

Book Travel Art and Collecting in South Asia

Download or read book Travel Art and Collecting in South Asia written by Natasha Eaton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travel, Art and Collecting in South Asia questions what are ideas of vertiginous collecting, art-making and museums as expanded fields, including wonder houses and missionary museums (or museobuses) in Britain and South Asia. If the historiography of British India has privileged photography and the 'Imperial Picturesque', the emphasis here is on the formation of a creole modernity, one that considers the relationship between art and labour, including pearlescence and pearl fishing in Sri Lanka, and the iconoclastic/fetish debates and forms of collecting amongst missionaries. Eaton explores these themes alongside the genealogies and modernities of white(ness) in contemporary curating and amateur female practice, and how the museobus or museum as a unique object has informed the work of contemporary artist group Raqs Media Collective. This book will be of interest to scholars in art history, Asian history, and imperial and colonial history.

Book High Winds

Download or read book High Winds written by Sylvan Oswald and published by . This book was released on 2017-06-10 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does sleep--or its absence--change us? At the end of another wakeful night, High Winds tears off on a hallucinatory road trip in search of his estranged half brother, led by cryptic signs and coincidences. Part modern-day pillow book, part picture book for adults, and told in an associative, elliptical style, the narrative takes readers deep into a dreamlike Western landscape. Jessica Fleischmann's atmospheric imagery amplifies the words on every page, referencing 1980s graphics, net art, and something yet unseen; Sylvan Oswald's text inhabits and draws meaning from this visual environment. Gas stations, local legends, and unlikely rock formations become terrain for explorations of fear, fantasy, masculinity, medication, spatial structures, and bodily functions--inspired by the author's experience of gender transition, insomnia, and moving to Los Angeles. Poetic and funny, surreal and beautiful--High Winds makes a delightful companion, before or instead of a good night's sleep.
