Book The Evolution of New China Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Evolution of New China Classic Reprint written by William Nesbitt Brewster and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of New China The substance of the following pages was given to the students of the Theological School of Boston University in a series of addresses in November, 1904. The students and others ex pressed a desire to have them in more permanent and fuller form than their notes. They were not delivered from manuscript. The task of te writing has been a slow one, not only, nor, perhaps, chiefly because of lack of time from the life of a busy missionary, but because the changes in China have been so rapid and sweeping during the last three years that any utterance except prophecy is almost sure to be out of date by the time it reaches the American public, unless it is telegraphed and published in a daily newspaper. So that there is no intention to make this little volume a vehicle of news. The periodical and daily press must be relied upon for that. There is, however, an at tempt to discuss the trend of events, and to indi cate the direction of the Eastern breezes by a few straws here and there. Download or read book History of China Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Demetrius C. Boulger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of China, Vol. 1 IT is unnecessary for me to detain the reader with any lengthy remarks by way of introduction to this history. The Chinese Empire presents for our con sideration one of the most complicated of existing problems; and the subject is of growing rather than waning importance. In 'dealing with its history we are not discussing the fortunes of some Empire that has long disappeared, nor are we seeking to discern the future of a race that has lost or forgotten the capacity of government; but we are treating of a stat-e and a people that apparently were never, during the long course of their national existence, more powerful and flourishing than they are at this very day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from China of the Chinese The above general plan, with its broad outlines, represents neither the popular nor the academical method of viewing Chinese history. The former pictures a misty past, in which figures of the great Patriarchs and great Sages, the Builder Of the Great Wall and Burner of Books, with here and there a chivalrous hero, are dimly discerned, and later epochs, of which the knowledge is also misty, known as Augustan Ages of Chinese literature and poetry, all of which are completely overshadowed by the modern periods of foreign intercourse and foreign wars, openings for trade and robbing of territory which, though of historical value, are accorded too large a space in the picture to constitute it a properly proportioned representation of the whole of Chinese history. Book An Outline History of China Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Outline History of China Classic Reprint written by Herbert H. Gowen and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline History of China The consequence is that, to the best of the writer's knowledge, there is no work in English giving the student such a sketch of pre-Manchu times as will enable him to grasp the singular continuity of Chinese political and social life. It is too much for the writer to suppose that he has completely filled the gap, but it is hoped that he has made some such contribution as will bring home to many in our schools and colleges some part of the interest which lies behind the veil. It is impossible here to mention all the sources to which this book is indebted. Most of them will appear from the notes and from the attached bibliography. Special acknowledgment, however, should be made to the writings of Professor Hirth of Columbia, G. Pauthier, Abel Remusat, Chavannes, Legge, Williams, Giles, Mayers, Douglas and D. C. Bougler. Book The Ancient History of China to the End of the Ch u Dynasty Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2016-06-28 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ancient History of China to the End of the Chou Dynasty When, in 1813, about the time of the battle of Leipzig, patriotic cares preyed upon his soul, Germany's great poet, Goethe, took refuge in the history of China. The novelty of the study and the very diversity of the subject had, we may conclude from his own words, l a salutary effect on his mind. The century, or nearly so, which has elapsed since the time when Chinese subjects were the Ultima Thule in that wide range of scientific industry characteristic of one of the world's most universal minds has wrought a wonder ful change in public interest. Political events have brought China to the front; and the Western world is now more than ever bent on study ing the civilization of that once-neglected empire - un fortunately often with ill success. It is the universal complaint among Westerners - and those who have had the longest experience in studying Orientals are the most ready to admit the fact - that we shall scarcely ever be come as familiar with the Chinese as we are with nations nearer to ourselves in race and culture. This complaint will probably never cease to be justified, but it may be considerably attenuated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Trade and Administration of China Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Trade and Administration of China Classic Reprint written by Hosea Ballou Morse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trade and Administration of China This book is intended to portray the present state of the Chinese Empire, with such record of the past as will show by what process of evolution the existing state has been reached. NO attempt is made to forecast the future, or even to refer to the revolution which, under the name of Reform, has been begun. The development of many centuries is to be recast, and within a year or a generation, according as the pace is forced or not, it will assume an unaccustomed garb; and the China of that future day, near or distant, will not be the China of to-day. Whether this revolution will follow the precedent of the English Revolution or of the French, whether it will proceed by logical development from step to step, or will rush on a headlong course, will depend upon the wisdom and self restraint of the leaders in the government, and in the last resort upon the nature of that public opinion which will be created in the Chinese people. But, just as the history of the England of the Georges cannot be well understood without some knowledge of the Stuart period, and as an acquaintance with the France of the Kingdom and the Empire is necessary to a comprehension of the France of the Third Republic, so also, to understand the China which the student of the future will know, he must be able to study its past. The China Of today is, with minor differences, the China of the past and in this book it is hoped that the future student will find, within the limits of the dozen subjects treated, a succinct account Of the foundation on which the China of the future will be erected. Book Outlines of Chinese History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Outlines of Chinese History Classic Reprint written by Li Ung Bing and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Chinese History The present book was written for two classes of Chinese. 'to those who are studying English, it is not so much an attempt to teach Chinese History by English as English through the medium of Chinese History. Certainly it will prove doubly interesting to read the facts of the history of one's own country in a foreign tongue which he is making an effort to learn. To those to whom Chinese History must otherwise remain unknown, it is hoped that the Out lines may induce them to seek further knowledge from the original sources. The recent events which are introducing a new epoch in China make a study of our ancient institutions doubly necessary. Book The Power of Print in Modern China

Download or read book The Power of Print in Modern China written by Robert Culp and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid early twentieth-century China’s epochal shifts, a vital and prolific commercial publishing industry emerged. Recruiting late Qing literati, foreign-trained academics, and recent graduates of the modernized school system to work as authors and editors, publishers produced textbooks, reference books, book series, and reprints of classical texts in large quantities at a significant profit. Work for major publishers provided a living to many Chinese intellectuals and offered them a platform to transform Chinese cultural life. In The Power of Print in Modern China, Robert Culp explores the world of commercial publishing to offer a new perspective on modern China’s cultural transformations. Culp examines China’s largest and most influential publishing companies—Commercial Press, Zhonghua Book Company, and World Book Company—during the late Qing and Republican periods and into the early years of the People’s Republic. He reconstructs editors’ cultural activities and work lives as a lens onto the role of intellectuals in cultural change. Examining China’s distinct modes of industrial publishing, Culp explains the emergence of the modern Chinese intellectual through commercial and industrial processes rather than solely through political revolution and social movements. An original account of Chinese intellectual and cultural history as well as global book history, The Power of Print in Modern China illuminates the production of new forms of knowledge and culture in the twentieth century.

Download or read book The Development of China Classic Reprint written by Kenneth Scott Latourette and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of China Such important developments have taken place in the Chinese situation in the little over three years that have elapsed since this book was first published that it has seemed wise to add an account of them to the sixth chapter. At the same time such mistakes in the text as have been disclosed in the months that the book has been in use have been corrected, a few titles of the better recent works on China have been added to the bibliography, and Chapter VII has been modified in a few places to make it accord with existing conditions. The author wishes to express his appreciation of the friendly criticisms which have come from many quarters and which have in part been incorporated in the corrections. It is hoped that because of these changes the book may be of larger use to those who, either as teachers or as students, wish an introduction to the history, culture, and problems of the great Asiatic republic.courtesy of Professor F.
