Book excerpt: Galaxies are vast ensembles of stars, gas and dust, embedded in dark matter halos. They are the basic building blocks of the Universe, gathered in groups, clusters and super-clusters. They exist in many forms, either as spheroids or disks. Classifications, such as the Hubble sequence (based on mass concentration and gas fraction) and the colormagnitude diagram (which separates a blue cloud from a red sequence) help to understand their formation and evolution. Galaxies spend a large part of their lives in the blue cloud, forming stars as spiral or dwarf galaxies. Then, via a mechanism that is still unclear, they stop forming stars and quietly end in the red sequence, as spheroids. This transformation may be due to galaxy interactions, or because of the feedback of active nuclei, through the energy released by their central super-massive black holes. These mechanisms could explain the history of cosmic star formation, the rate of which was far greater in the first half of the UniverseÂs life. Galaxies delves into all of these surrounding subjects in six chapters written by dedicated, specialist astronomers and researchers in the field, from their numerical simulations to their evolutions.

In the same spirit, it can forcefully be argued that galaxies are the crossroads of astronomy. Internal pro ces ses within galaxies involve all of the fundamental components of astrophysics: stellar evolution, star formation, low-density astrophysics, dynamics, hydrodynamics, and high-energy astrophysics. Indeed, one can hardly name an observational datum in any wavelength range on any kind of celestial object that does not provide a useful clue to galaxy formation and evolution. Although internal processes in galaxies until recently occupied most of our attention, we now know that it is also vital to relate galaxies to their environment. How galaxies congregate in larger structures and are in turn influenced by them are crucial questions for galactic evolution. On a grander level we have also come to regard galaxies as the basic building blocks of the universe, the basic units whereby the large scale structure of the universe is apprehended and quantified. On a grander level still, we also believe strongly that galaxies are the direct descendents of early density irregularities in the Big Bang. Galaxy properties are now viewed as providing a crucial constraint on the physics of the Big Bang and a vital link between the macroscopic and microscopic structure of the universe.

One of the most fundamental discoveries about the evolution of galaxies is that their properties have a dependence on their location relative to this cosmic web (i.e., their environment). However, detailed studies of the environmental dependence on galaxy evolution have been extremely challenging due to the inherent complexity of the structures on the largest scales, a plethora of techniques being used to try to map the cosmic web, and other confounding factors, such as the masses of galaxies, that also affect their evolution. In this work, we will present a technique for characterizing the environments of galaxies in the cosmic web, which is comprised of two separate, but complementary, methods that together provide a more complete measure of environment. After some introductory background in Chapter 1, we will demonstrate these mapping techniques on the Coma Supercluster, and present an analysis of the star-formation activity of about 4,000 galaxies in the supercluster environment in Chapter 2. Next, in Chapter 3 we present a greatly expanded application of our mapping techniques encompassing about 60,000 galaxies within 200 Mpc that addresses several outstanding questions from the Coma Supercluster study, and also leads to new intriguing insights into the evolution of galaxies as a function of environment. Then, in Chapter 4 we present a pilot study focusing on galaxy evolution as traced by the gas content around two galaxy clusters. We also expand upon this pilot study in Chapter 5, whereupon we examine more closely the resiliency of molecular gas content, compared to the atomic gas, to the effects of the cluster environment. And finally, in Chapter 6 we present some concluding remarks and explore some promising avenues for future study.

Book excerpt: This dissertation describes research performed in the field of observational astrophysics as part of the Observations of Redshift Evolution in Large Scale Environment (ORELSE) survey, an ongoing multi-wavelength imaging and spectroscopic campaign investigating galaxyevolution in the environments of large scale structures (LSSs) surrounding 16 known clusters at the redshift range of $0.6 [less than or equal to] z [less than or equal to] 1.3. The aim of this dissertation is to contextualize how environment influences galaxy evolution among radio-emitting galaxies and radio Active Galactic Nucleus (RAGN) in a wide dynamic range of environments over cosmic time. In each of the three main chapters I present a sample of radio galaxies and an analysis of the connection to their environments. In the first part of this dissertation I describe the context of radio galaxies, galaxy environments, and the current state of the ORELSE survey. This initial section will set the framework for the variety of studies presented in this thesis. In the second part of this dissertation I present three studies undertaken to investigate various aspects of radio galaxies and the role of there environments. The first of these studies is an investigation of radio galaxies that are cross-matched to spectroscopically-confirmed galaxies in the large scale structures in the five fields of the ORELSE survey. To appropriately classify radio galaxies and study the properties of them separately, a two stage classification method is designed, where radio galaxies are classified into three sub-classes: active galactic nucleus (AGN), Hybrid, and star-forming galaxy (SFG). AGN tend to be preferentially located in locally dense environments and in the cores of clusters/groups, while SFGs exhibit a strong preference for intermediate-density global environments, with these preferences persisting when comparing to galaxies of similar color and stellar mass. These result has important consequences for galaxy evolutionary scenarios, as these two types of galaxies are thought to be the beginning and the end of galaxy evolution. The second of these studies is an investigation of the quenching effect of radio AGN (RAGN) on their neighboring galaxies. In this study, an elevated fraction of quenched RAGN neighbors was found in the most dense local and cluster environments, compared to those of non-RAGN control samples matched to the RAGN population in colour, stellar mass, and local environment. This result suggests that RAGN residing within clusters might heat the intracluster medium (ICM) affecting both in situ star formation and any inflowing gas that remains in their neighbors. This work has important consequences for understanding AGN feedback out of their host galaxies, which is the subject of much debate among astronomers.The final study in this dissertation is a full investigation of the co-evolution of AGN and star formation in radio galaxies in eight ORELSE fields. This study was first motivated by the Hybrid population analyzed in the first study, whose properties suggested that they have coeval star-formation and AGN activity with high accretion efficiency. Combining radio with mid-infrared and far-infrared data available in the ORELSE survey, the AGN and star formation contributions to the total infrared luminosity are well constrained. I present evidence for AGN quenching of the star formation in a rapid timescale in an orbital motion around the clusters/groups. This result has important consequences for galaxy evolutionary scenarios by connecting the two processes that are difficult to separate observationally and are thought to be related.
