Book The Evil That Surrounds Us

Download or read book The Evil That Surrounds Us written by Kevin P. Spicer and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1931, Gustav Becker and Erna Kohen married. He was Catholic and she was Jewish. Erna and Gustav had no idea their religious affiliations, which mattered so little to them, would define their marriage under the Nazis. As one of the more than 20,000 German Jews married to an "Aryan" spouse, Erna was initially exempt from the most radical anti-Jewish measures. However, even after Erna willingly converted to Catholicism, the persecution, isolation, and hatred leveled against them by the Nazi regime and their Christian neighbors intensified, and she and their son Silvan were forced to flee alone into the mountains. Through intimate and insightful diary entries, Erna tells her own compelling and horrifying story and reflects on the fortunate escapes and terrible tragedies of her friends and family. The Nazis would exact steep payment for Erna's survival: her home, her family, and ultimately her faithful husband's life. The Evil That Surrounds Us reveals both the great evil of Nazi Germany and the powerful love and courage of her husband, friends, and strangers who risked everything to protect her.

Book Hallow This Ground

Download or read book Hallow This Ground written by Colin Rafferty and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning outside the boarded-up windows of Columbine High School and ending almost twelve years later on the fields of Shiloh National Military Park, Hallow This Ground revolves around monuments and memorials—physical structures that mark the intersection of time and place. In the ways they invite us to interact with them, these sites teach us to recognize our ties to the past. Colin Rafferty explores places as familiar as his hometown of Kansas City and as alien as the concentration camps of Poland in an attempt to understand not only our common histories, but also his own past, present, and future. Rafferty blends the travel essay with the lyric, the memoir with the analytic, in this meditation on the ways personal histories intersect with History, and how those intersections affect the way we understand and interact with Place.

Book excerpt: During the season of Lent and especially around Easter, many people think about the life and times of Jesus, thanks partly to the glut of biblical epics on television. But the truth is that many of us bracket the biblical narrative off from our everyday life. "If I had lived in Bible times... if I had seen the miracles..." We make the Thomas mistake of imagining that seeing is believing.... The Holy Spirit enables us -- no, it compels us -- to see as Jesus saw and do as Jesus did. Believing is seeing: the gift of the Holy Spirit allows us to really comprehend what is going on around us and understand the positive role God wants us to play. -- from Easter 2 sermon, "Believing Is Seeing" Through fascinating anecdotes and stories drawn from his experience as a campus minister, John Brittain applies the gospel readings from the Revised Common Lectionary to contemporary life. His powerful and insightful messages proclaim the good news in everyday situations -- they'll hold listeners' attention from beginning to end. Titles include: And Now the News (Luke 13:1-9) A Tale of Two Crosses (Luke 22:14--23:56) Believing Is Seeing (John 20:19-31) How Can They Do That? (John 14:23-29) Christo-centric or Ego-centric? (John 17:20-26) John N. Brittain is the Chaplain at the University of Evansville in Evansville, Indiana. A magna cum laude graduate of Brown University, he has also earned degrees from Methodist Theological School in Delaware, Ohio (M.Div.) and St. Mary's Seminary and University in Baltimore, Maryland (D.Min.). Brittain has worked with generations of young adults during 20+ years in campus ministry as well as on many mission projects in the urban U.S., Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, Russia, and Africa. Book excerpt: Real By: David E. Jackson Real: a walk with the Holy Spirit is an excursion through my life not accepting God’s works. Then one day CHANGE happened. These words came: Why must the good be made to suffer? Every being on earth is given a cross to bear and how they deal with it, whether they choose to curse it or give praise for it. This has a great bearing come Judgment Day. I demanded this question of God back in 1988 and, finally, in His graces in 2012 His answer was ready to be received by me. Again, I say loudly, “God is Real.”

Book Weapons of Praise Worship

Download or read book Weapons of Praise Worship written by Abimbola Salu and published by WestBowPress. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is a constant battle between good and evil. Unfortunately, many are ignorant of how to fight the battles of life. Human beings operate on two levels: the spiritual world and the physical world. Unknown to many, the spiritual controls the physical. In life, many of the problems that a man encounters are already introduced in the spiritual realm, yet he continues to look for physical solutions to spiritual problems. God has made available to every child of God the weapons to fight spiritual battles. These include the blood of Jesus, fire of the Holy Spirit etc. However, one of the most powerful weapons available to man is the weapon of praise and worship. This book examines the reason why we fight spiritual battles and how to win spiritual wars. It also examines the life of King Jehoshaphat and the children of Israel and how they used the weapons of praise and worship to defeat their enemies.

Book Footprints of the Lord

    Book Details:
  • Author : Uchenna Mezue
  • Publisher : Trafford Publishing
  • Release : 2004
  • ISBN : 1412029201
  • Pages : 186 pages

Download or read book Footprints of the Lord written by Uchenna Mezue and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is very little to say in the way of introduction to this work except that the thoughts expressed are not original. They derive from the accumulated knowledge received by humanity from the Love of God and which is freely available to all in many forms. I have drawn from the sacred literature of the three major revealed religions - Judaism, Christianity and Islam, but significantly I have drawn freely from the work '"In the Light of Truth" the Grail Message' by Abd-ru-shin. I also acknowledge the influence of all other works that lead to the One true God and the many thoughts and words of fellow human beings who have travelled the same path, whether these were never expressed or were eloquently expressed in writing or verbally. Since the work is so intimately associated with the guidance we have received from our God, I have not always paraphrased or referred to the specific source. This is most marked with the Grail Message the reading of which has influenced and changed my life completely. It may suffice to say that in its comprehensiveness, the Grail Message moves through the whole of this work. I have also not always quoted specific references from the Bible but as the title suggests the New Testament especially is a primary source. In spite of this or perhaps because of it, it must be emphasized that the contents of this book is limited by and within my understanding. The Truth stands above everything, and knowledge about our Creator is infinitely profound. No single human being can claim full understanding or even enough understanding to lead others unless he is especially called to that mission. I therefore offer this only as an encouragement to others to seek more diligently, to look more closely at our heritage as Christians and as human beings and to remain open to the work of the Spirit of Truth.
