Book The Everlasting Man

    Book Details:
  • Author : G. K. Chesterton
  • Publisher : Hendrickson Publishers
  • Release : 2022-05-03
  • ISBN : 1598566458
  • Pages : 270 pages

Download or read book The Everlasting Man written by G. K. Chesterton and published by Hendrickson Publishers. This book was released on 2022-05-03 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with an insightful study on the nature of man, Chesterton argues that the central character in history is Jesus Christ, the everlasting Man. No other explanation of the world fits the evidence. Exploding the stale formula of Christ as the pale product of human imagination, he triumphantly asserts the glory and unassailable logic of Christ as the God who, in the fullness of time, steps into his own creation. Displaying all of his brilliant synthesis and devastating irony, The Everlasting Man is perhaps Chesterton’s best book. C. S. Lewis, who cited The Everlasting Man as one of the principal books in his conversion, said, “I read Chesterton’s Everlasting Man and for the first time saw the whole Christian outline of history set out in a form that seemed to me to make sense.”

Book excerpt: Scottish zoologist IVAN TERRANCE SANDERSON (1911-1973) coined the word cryptozoology and first used it in print in this hard-to-find 1961 work, the story of "hairy hominids" across the planet from the very beginnings of human civilization until the mid 20th century. With its scientific, anthropological approach, this is one of the first books to treat the phenomenon of "Bigfoot" seriously, and introduced a groundbreaking classification system for the spectrum of subhumanoids. "I am happy that a whole new generation of cryptozoologists-in-training will be able to read Ivan T. Sanderson's classic book," says cryptozoologist Loren Coleman in his new introduction. "This book opened the minds of many to the vastness of the hominoid reports... and spotlighted for people that Bigfoot/Sasquatch research was the next area for exploration in North America." This new edition, complete with the original illustrations and maps, is part of Cosimo's Loren Coleman Presents series. LOREN COLEMAN is author of numerous books of cryptozoology, including Bigfoot!: The True Story of Apes in America and Mothman and Other Curious Encounters.

Just driving by a prison can be intimidating, especially if you see the people in their prison garb working beside the road or in the fields with armed guards on horseback attending to them. But what if you went inside those bars and heard the heavy iron gates lock behind you? What if, armed only with a Bible, notebook, and pencil, you walked among them? In this book, you will take a journey through those halls, visit the people that only God could love, and learn to feel that love passing from the Almighty God through your flawed body to that person. Get ready for the journey. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you might even get a little angry; but, hopefully, you will have a better understanding of what a mighty God we serve and how the Holy Spirit can use a willing servant to accomplish his needs.

Book Chesterton and Tolkien as Theologians

Download or read book Chesterton and Tolkien as Theologians written by Alison Milbank and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes Chesterton's 'natural theology' through fairytales seriously as a theological project appropriate to an intellectual attempt to return to faith in a secular age. It argues that Tolkien's fiction makes sense also as the work of a Catholic writer steeped in Chestertonian ideas and sharing his literary-theological poetics. While much writing on religious fantasy moves quickly to talk about wonder, Milbank shows that this has to be hard won and that Chesterton is more akin to the modernist writers of the early twentieth-century who felt quite dislocated from the past. His favoured tropes of paradox, defamiliarization and the grotesque have much in common with writers like T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound and James Joyce and their use of the demotic as well as the 'mythic method'. Using Chesterton's literary rhetoric as a frame, the book sets out to chart a redemptive poetics that first decentres the reader from his habitual perception of the world, then dramatizes his self-alienation through the grotesque, before finding in that very alienation a sort of pharmakon through paradox and an embrace of difference. The next step is to change one's vision of the world beyond the self through magic which, paradoxically, is the means by which one can reconnect with the physical world and remove the fetishism and commodification of the object. Chesterton's theology of gift is the means in which this magic becomes real and people and things enter into reciprocal relations that reconnect them with the divine.
