Book The Concept of Woman

Download or read book The Concept of Woman written by Prudence Allen and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The culmination of a lifetime's scholarly work, this pioneering study by Sister Prudence Allen traces the concept of woman in relation to man in Western thought from ancient times to the present. Volume I uncovers four general categories of questions asked by philosophers for two thousand years. These are the categories of opposites, of generation, of wisdom, and of virtue. Sister Prudence Allen traces several recurring strands of sexual and gender identity within this period. Ultimately, she shows the paradoxical influence of Aristotle on the question of woman and on a philosophical understanding of sexual coomplemenarity. Supplemented throughout with helpful charts, diagrams, and illustrations, this volume will be an important resource for scholars and students in the fields of women's studies, philosophy, history, theology, literary studies, and political science. In Volume 2, Sister Prudence Allen explores claims about sex and gender identity in the works of over fifty philosophers (both men and women) in the late medieval and early Renaissance periods. Touching on the thought of every philosopher who considered sex or gender identity between A.D. 1250 and 1500, The Concept of Woman provides the analytical categories necessary for situating contemporary discussion of women in relation to men. Adding to the accessibility of this fine discussion are informative illustrations, helpful summary charts, and extracts of original source material (some not previously available in English). In her third and final volume Allen covers the years 1500--2015, continuing her chronological approach to individual authors and also offering systematic arguments to defend certain philosophical positions over against others.

[liberated-connected-committed. Documents of the 8th General Assembly of the Community of Protestant Churches in Europe (CPCE) Basel, Switzerland, September 13-18, 2018] Bringing Europe alive. The 8th General Assembly of the Community of Protestant Churches in Europe brought together some 200 delegates from all over Europe in September 2018 to gather in Basle Cathedral. This volume of documents contains the reports, resolutions and their reasoning, speeches, sermons, addresses, photos and the message of peace commemorating the centenary of the end of the First World War. These records reflect the church communion experienced between the Protestant Churches in Europe. Continuing to move forward under the guiding principle of reconciled diversity, the General Assembly addressed unity between the churches and with their ecumenical partners as well as the relationship with society as a whole. The keynote speech by Andrea Riccardi, the founder of the Community of Sant'Egidio in Rome, is also included in this volume of documents, together with directional sermons from members of the Presidium and the Final Report outlining the key issues for the years ahead.

Book A New History of Medieval French Literature

Download or read book A New History of Medieval French Literature written by Jacqueline Cerquiglini-Toulet and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it legitimate to conceive of and write a history of medieval French literature when the term “literature” as we know it today did not appear until the very end of the Middle Ages? In this novel introduction to French literature of the period, Jacqueline Cerquiglini-Toulet says yes, arguing that a profound literary consciousness did exist at the time. Cerquiglini-Toulet challenges the standard ways of reading and evaluating literature, considering medieval literature not as separate from that in other eras but as part of the broader tradition of world literature. Her vast and learned readings of both canonical and lesser-known works pose crucial questions about, among other things, the notion of otherness, the meaning of change and stability, and the relationship of medieval literature with theology. Part history of literature, part theoretical criticism, this book reshapes the language and content of medieval works. By weaving together topics such as the origin of epic and lyric poetry, Latin-French bilingualism, women’s writing, grammar, authorship, and more, Cerquiglini-Toulet does nothing less than redefine both philosophical and literary approaches to medieval French literature. Her book is a history of the literary act, a history of words, a history of ideas and works—monuments rather than documents—that calls into question modern concepts of literature.

Book Conversation and Storytelling in Fifteenth and Sixteenth century French Nouvelles

Download or read book Conversation and Storytelling in Fifteenth and Sixteenth century French Nouvelles written by Kathleen Loysen and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2004 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the role of represented speech in four short story collections from fifteenth- and sixteenth-century France: the anonymous Evangiles des quenouilles; Martial d'Auvergne's Arrêts d'Amour; Marguerite de Navarre's Heptaméron; and Noël Du Fail's Propos rustiques. As a study of the narrative staging of the acts of storytelling and conversing, it raises issues of orality, aurality, and literacy, as well as of the processes of textual production, transmission, and reception. In addition, the conversational frame of these short story collections deliberately sets up questions about the accessibility and reliability of truth. While these collections claim to enter upon the path toward universal truth, the difficulty of such an enterprise is revealed through their very narrative structure, where the polyphony of opposing voices and divergent opinions is engaged by the very acts of conversation and storytelling themselves.
