Book Relations between the European Union and Egypt after 2011

This book was released on 2015-08-14 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This publication is unique not only on a national but also international scale. It concerns the subject of the European Union's relations with Egypt after 2011 (including the earlier period), which is a highly topical issue and a very difficult one to analyse and explain. It is the outcome of a research grant titled 'The European Union towards the Transformation Processes in Egypt after 2011.' The authors largely belong to a small group of experts on North Africa and the Middle East, including Egypt. They are familiar with the literature on the subject from around the world and EU legislation. A significant strength of this project concerns the fieldwork carried out on site, in Egypt (literature, documents, interviews and observation), as well as direct contacts with European Union officials."

In particular, this book explores to what extent the agreement can be considered a new legal instrument for ‘EU integration without membership’.

Book The Foreign Policies of the European Union and the United States in North Africa

Download or read book The Foreign Policies of the European Union and the United States in North Africa written by Francesco Cavatorta and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The war in Iraq seemed to bring to a head underlying differences between the United States and the vast majority of European countries regarding the best means to maintain international peace and stability. The unilateralism of the United States as opposed to the multilateralism of the European Union is seen as a very significant source of potential rivalry between the two actors. This volume examines in detail whether the policies of the United States and the EU are truly diverging with respect to the most pressing issues facing North Africa, or whether, in fact, they are converging in terms of objectives to be achieved and strategies for their implementation. Through a number of papers that include both comparative and case specific studies, this book enables a better understanding of the differences and similarities in EU and US foreign policies and security strategies for the region, a clearer analysis of their respective democracy promotion policies, and a better examination of their respective approach to the ‘Islamist question’ in light of the continued success of such movements. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of North African Studies.

Book Egypt after Mubarak

Download or read book Egypt after Mubarak written by Bruce K. Rutherford and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-02-21 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Which way will Egypt go now that Husni Mubarak's authoritarian regime has been swept from power? Will it become an Islamic theocracy similar to Iran? Will it embrace Western-style liberalism and democracy? Egypt after Mubarak reveals that Egypt's secularists and Islamists may yet navigate a middle path that results in a uniquely Islamic form of liberalism and, perhaps, democracy. Bruce Rutherford draws on in-depth interviews with Egyptian judges, lawyers, Islamic activists, politicians, and businesspeople. He utilizes major court rulings, political documents of the Muslim Brotherhood, and the writings of Egypt's leading contemporary Islamic thinkers. Rutherford demonstrates that, in post-Mubarak Egypt, progress toward liberalism and democracy is likely to be slow. Essential reading on a subject of global importance, this edition includes a new introduction by Rutherford that takes stock of the Arab Spring and the Muslim Brotherhood's victories in the 2011-2012 elections.

Book The Law of EU External Relations

Download or read book The Law of EU External Relations written by Pieter Jan Kuijper and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 913 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two years since publication of the first edition of The Law of EU External Relations: Cases, Materials, and Commentary on the EU as an International Actor have been characterized by the large amount of case law on the new provisions on external relations, which have found their way into the Lisbon Treaty. Moreover, there have been important changes in EU secondary law on external relations as a consequence of these changes to the Lisbon Treaty. In this second edition, new case law and legislative developments are critically discussed and analysed in this comprehensive collection of EU Treaty law. Combining chapters on the general basis of the Union's external action and its relation to international law, with chapters which further explore the law and practice of the EU in the specialized fields of external action, this book presents the law of EU external relations in a concise and accessible manner for students, practitioners, and academics in the field. Topics include the common commercial policy, development cooperation, cooperation with third countries, humanitarian aid, the enlargement and neighbourhood policies, the external environmental policy, and the common foreign and security policy. Carefully selected primary documents are accompanied with analytic commentary on the issues they raise and their significance for the overall structure of EU external relations law. The primary materials selected include many important legal documents that are hard to find elsewhere but give a vital insight into the operation of EU external relations law in practice.

Book The EU and Conflict Resolution

Download or read book The EU and Conflict Resolution written by Nathalie Tocci and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-05-22 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the study of five ethno-political conflicts lying on or just beyond Europe's borders, this book analyzes the impact and effectiveness of EU foreign policy on conflict resolution. Conflict resolution features strongly as an objective of the European Union's foreign policy. In promoting this aim, the EU's geographical focus has rested primarily in its beleaguered backyard to the south and to the east. Taking a strong comparative approach, Nathalie Tocci explores the principal determinants of conflict dynamics in Cyprus, Turkey, Serbia-Montenegro, Israel-Palestine and Georgia in order to assess the impact of EU contractual ties on them. The volume includes topical analyzis based on first-hand experience, in-depth interviews with all the relevant actors and photography in ongoing conflict areas in the Middle East, the Eastern Mediterranean, the Balkans and the Caucasus. This revealing study shows that the gap between EU potential and effectiveness often rests in the specific manner in which the EU collectively chooses to conduct its contractual relations. The EU and Conflict Resolution will be of interest to all readers who wish to acquire an excellent understanding of the EU's impact on conflict contexts and will appeal to scholars of European politics, security studies and conflict resolution.

Book Arab Perceptions of the Euro Mediterranean Partnership

Download or read book Arab Perceptions of the Euro Mediterranean Partnership written by Mohammad El-Sayed Selim and published by Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research. This book was released on 2001-10-10 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although most Arab countries have endorsed the European Union's proposal for an Euro-Mediterranean Partnership in principle, they also harbor serious reservations about its conceptual and security aspects and its future impact on their economies and on the peace process in the Middle East. The main concern is that the Euro-Mediterranean Free Trade Zone and its related rules of socio-economic conduct would expose fragile Arab industries to strong external competition and destroy indigenous enterprise. As long as the EU continues to follow a one-sided approach, with differential treatment for Israeli and Arab partners, the Arabs will continue to be ambivalent partners in the Barcelona process. This is evident from the cases of Tunisia and Morocco, which have signed partnership agreements with the EU but are now expressing serious doubts about the viability of the process. Further, the EU's concept of politico-security cooperation is geared toward conflict prevention, crisis management, and the introduction of CBMs, rather than on conflict resolution and the establishment of a balanced strategic system in the Mediterranean. The EU's responses to these Arab perceptions and misgivings will decide the future success of the EMP. It may be concluded that if the EU persists in its self-centered approach to Euro-Mediterranean cooperation, the EMP project is unlikely to materialize. This is particularly applicable to the economic partnership, which must be based on technology transfer and infrastructure support rather than trade liberalization, and to the security partnership, which should focus on conflict resolution and strategic balance rather than on maintaining the status quo.
