Book Cells Molecules and Mechanisms

Download or read book Cells Molecules and Mechanisms written by Eric Wong and published by Axolotl Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Yet another cell and molecular biology book? At the very least, you would think that if I was going to write a textbook, I should write one in an area that really needs one instead of a subject that already has multiple excellent and definitive books. So, why write this book, then? First, it's a course that I have enjoyed teaching for many years, so I am very familiar with what a student really needs to take away from this class within the time constraints of a semester. Second, because it is a course that many students take, there is a greater opportunity to make an impact on more students' pocketbooks than if I were to start off writing a book for a highly specialized upper- level course. And finally, it was fun to research and write, and can be revised easily for inclusion as part of our next textbook, High School Biology."--Open Textbook Library.

Download or read book Molecular Cytogenetics written by Barbara Hamkalo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the Proceedings of the Twenty-Sixth Annual Biology Division Research Conference held April 9-12, 1973 in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The subject of the symposium was Molecular Cytogenetics and the aim of the meeting was to bring together researchers interested in problems of chromosome organi zation, activity and regulation in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Cytological, biochemical and genetic approaches to these questions were included since the collective information gained from these disciplines provides an integrated approach to genome structure and function. The meeting was sponsored by the Biology Division of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory*. It would not have been possible with out the interest and cooperation of the organizing committee under the chairmanship of O. L. Miller, Jr. Special thanks are due to the chairmen and speakers for making this volume possible and to Dr. Waldo Cohn for his assistance in editing. Preparation of the completed volume was due in large part to the efforts of Sandra Vaughan of the Biology Division. Book Chromosomes

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kenneth W. Adolph
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 1990
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 278 pages

Download or read book Chromosomes written by Kenneth W. Adolph and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These volumes explore the variety of ways the genomes are packaged, and function in transcription and replication, as chromosomes of animals, plants, bacteria, and viruses. The topics concerning eukaryotic chromosomes that are discussed include: the DNA and protein components of chromosmes; mitosis and meiosis; and specialized, plant, and organelle chromosomes. With these higher systems, considerable progress has recently been made in understanding the organization and acitivity of mitotic and meitotic chromosomes. The volumes also fully cover the replication, segregation, and ultrastructure of prokaryotic (bacterial) chromosomes. These subjects are important since the field of molecular biology was founded on studies of the genetics and biochemistry of bacteria. The structure and function of viral chromosomes receive special emphasis in the volumes. Although viral genomes are extremely small, more variety exists in the strucuture of viruses than for eukaryotic chromosomes. In examining eukaryotic, prokaryotic, and viral chromosomes, the chapters informatively reveal the most significant aspects of chromosome organization, replication, and expression. Although chromosomes differ vastly in their sizes and complexity, they are shown to employ similar molecular mechanisms, using similar components, to carry out their functions. This is a valuable reference for graduate students, researchers, and clinicians in biology, cell biology, genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry and microbiology.

Book The Eukaryotic Replisome a Guide to Protein Structure and Function

Download or read book The Eukaryotic Replisome a Guide to Protein Structure and Function written by Stuart MacNeill and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-23 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-fidelity chromosomal DNA replication underpins all life on the planet. In humans, there are clear links between chromosome replication defects and genome instability, genetic disease and cancer, making a detailed understanding of the molecular mechanisms of genome duplication vital for future advances in diagnosis and treatment. Building on recent exciting advances in protein structure determination, the book will take the reader on a guided journey through the intricate molecular machinery of eukaryotic chromosome replication and provide an invaluable source of information, ideas and inspiration for all those with an interest in chromosome replication, whether from a basic science, translational biology and medical research perspective.

Book Human Chromosomes

  • Pages : 247 pages

Download or read book Human Chromosomes written by Eeva Therman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to human cytogenetics. It is also suitable for use as a text in a general cytogenetics course, since the basic features of chromosome structure and behavior are shared by all eukar yotes. Because my own background includes plant and animal cytoge netics, many of the examples are taken from organisms other than man. Since the book is written from a cytogeneticist's point of view, human syndromes are described only as illustrations of the effects of abnormal chromosome constitutions on the phenotype. The selection of the phe nomena to be discussed and of the photographs to illustrate them is, in many cases, subjective and arbitrary and is naturally influenced by my interests and the work done in our laboratory. The approach to citations is the exact opposite of that usually used in scientific papers. Whenever possible, the latest and/or most comprehen sive review has been cited, instead of the original publication. Thus the reader is encouraged to delve deeper into any question of interest to him or her. I am greatly indebted to many colleagues for suggestions and criticism. However, my special thanks are due to Dr. JAMES F. CROW, Dr. TRAUTE M. SCHROEDER, and Dr. CARTER DENNISTON for their courage in reading the entire manuscript. I wish to express my gratitude also to the cytogeneticists and editors who have generously permitted the use of published and unpublished photographs.
