Book Wall Paintings of Eton

Download or read book Wall Paintings of Eton written by Emily Howe and published by Scala Arts Publishers Incorporated. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paintings which adorn the lower walls of the chapel at Eton College are arguably the most important surviving late-medieval murals in Northern Europe. Documented as having been painted between 1479 and 1487, they originally comprised some thirty-two scenes ranged in two registers on the chapel's north and south walls, recounting the miracles of the Virgin. Concealed for years with whitewash and panelling, it was not until the 1920s that the paintings were finally uncovered and their significance appreciated fully. This stunningly illustrated publication brings together the considerable body of recent research into these internationally important wall paintings, giving a comprehensive description and an account of their creation and patronage. It also includes a fascinating discussion on the Head Master's Chambers wall painting dated to around 1520 and discovered in 2005. AUTHOR: Emily Howe is wall paintings advisor to English Heritage and works closely with the Courtauld Institute's Department of Wall Painting. Henrietta McBurney is Keeper of Fine and Applied Arts at Eton College and was previously curator of Prints and Drawings at the Royal Collection, Windsor Castle. Professor David Park is Director of the Conservation of Wall Painting Department at the Courtauld Institute of Art. SELLING POINTS: *Wall Paintings of Eton combines known facts about the wall paintings with the findings of recently commissioned scientific analysis *This is the first book on these important works since M. Book The Eton College Chapel Wall Paintings

Download or read book The Eton College Chapel Wall Paintings written by Roger Rosewell and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late fifteenth century wall paintings in Eton College Chapel are the finest surviving examples in northern Europe. Over sixty five feet (19.812 m) long, they depict scenes from the Miracles of the Virgin separated by standing figures of saints. Largely painted in monochrome - or grisaille - style and enriched with flashes of colour, the style is reminiscent of Netherlandish art and represents a visual stepping stone between traditional gothic imagery and English renaissance art. In the first full length study of these magnificent paintings, Roger Rosewell describes the human stories behind them; who they were made for and why, the beliefs that underpinned them, the nationality and style of the painters, the fate of the paintings during the Reformation when the College barber was paid `to wipe them out' and how they were eventually rediscovered centuries later behind layers of whitewash. Illustrated by over 150 stunning photographs, this book is a magnificent pictorial record of one of the most sophisticated masterpieces of late medieval art; a masterpiece that was almost lost to us for all time.Roger Rosewell was educated at St Edmund Hall, Oxford University. A former journalist, he is Director of a private European Art Foundation and the News Editor of the on-line stained glass journal, VIDIMUS. His other published works include Medieval Wall Paintings/ (Boydell 2008).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The medieval wall paintings that remain in English churches are for the most part shadows of their former selves – the rare fragments of this beautiful art to have survived not only the Reformation but also successive waves of iconoclastic zeal and unsympathetic restoration. The whitewashed walls of most parish churches belie the riot of colour and decoration that once adorned them, but the remnants of paintings tucked into corners or rescued from later layers of paint help us to understand the role of art in medieval religion. Roger Rosewell here offers a guide to the role played by medieval wall paintings, as religious, didactic and commemorative works of art, telling the stories of those who created them and those who used them on a daily basis. He also compares and contrasts religious and domestic wall paintings, using beautiful colour photography throughout.

Book The Conservation of Wall Paintings

Download or read book The Conservation of Wall Paintings written by Sharon Cather and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 1992-01-16 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is the result of a symposium organized by the GCI and the Courtauld Institute of Art in London in 1987. Because the conservation of wall paintings requires an interdisciplinary approach, the purpose of the symposium was to facilitate the exchange of information among international conservators, scientists, and historians involved in major wall paintings conservation projects. The interdisciplinary nature of contemporary wall paintings conservation is reflected in this volume which contains the symposium's papers. The Sistine Chapel, the Brancacci Chapel, and the Tomb of Nefertari are among the well-known wall paintings discussed in this book by international experts in wall paintings conservation. The special problems associated with the protection of works such as these are explored from the perspective of diagnosis, documentation, treatment, and monitoring. A definitive paper on the effects of salts on wall paintings is also included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of this book arises from recent developments in the inventory, preservation and study of mural paintings from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, particularly those from what can be considered the periphery of Europe. The aim of this book is to demonstrate the vitality that the study of wall painting in peripheral regions can bring to the discipline of Art History. The articles collected in this book are overwhelmingly about wall paintings that would be hard pressed to be considered part of the master narrative of Art History. They are studies regarding regions and themes that are rarely present in the mainstream of the discipline, but their common thread is their focus on the functional dimension of mural paintings and on the complex interrelation between image, audience, social context and everyday life. From Denmark to Portugal, from graffiti to secular painting, from the orthodox monasteries of Moldavia to the noble residences of Tirol, from Giotto to anonymous and sometimes almost amateur painters, the studies gathered in this book place very distinct artistic realities side by side offering complementary perspectives and insights. The book will make a valuable contribution to the literature on Medieval and Renaissance mural painting, combining theoretical essays with others more descriptive. As the eighteen studies collected in this book deal with paintings from a range of European regions, from Denmark to Portugal and Romania, the book will find its way in Europe and abroad, both in the field of art history and that of Medieval and Early Modern history. The wealth of plates and figures will make the book also accessible to a broad audience interested in the history of painting, architecture and cultural heritage.
